seeing white musical theater twinks being the only ones happy about NS’s tony win is so telling…. like yall are so content with mediocrity ofc yall will just watch someone park and bark with absolutely no emotion on a blank stage with no set, no direction, in a show that only works to the fullest extent when it has all of the moving parts, and then turn around and say that audra mcdonald is bad in gypsy bc she *checks notes* has a distracting headvoice? even though the choice to not cast a belter was intentional given that they orchestrated the show in audra’s vocal break range to enhance the desperation in her performance that actually adds layers to the story rather than taking them away?

im so sick of the jamie lloyd “minimalism” bullshit that’s being pushed by other white people in the theater world because it’s not inspired, it’s not ‘different’, it’s not ‘groundbreaking’. it’s lazy and boring. the show had cool lighting- okay? what about the nonexistent set and costumes that are supposed to provide context for the time and place the story happens in (a pretty fucking important element to the narrative of sunset blvd)? yeah, sure, NS can belt the notes, but where is the desperation? where is the slight mania with which Norma Desmond operates?

musical theatre is not just about sounding perfect all the time- it is about acting a song first and foremost, any musical theatre acting class will tell you that. yeah- it should sound good, but it should also be acted. there has been this increasing trend lately in musical theatre where these white gay (mostly) men are prioritizing vocal perfection over the actual character and performance, and it pisses me off (as a white theatre gay). when i’m going to see a show, i’m not going to see a concert where the vocals are perfectly processed and polished (ofc unless that’s what the show calls for in a character), i’m going to see the actress ACTING.
