Songkran is the Thai New Year's festival. The Thai New Year's Day is 13 April every year, but the holiday period includes 14–15 April as well.
The word "Songkran" comes from the Sanskrit word 'saṃkrānti' meaning transformation or change. The term was borrowed from Makar Sankranti- the name of a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in India in January to mark the arrival of spring. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart and with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia, in keeping with the Buddhist/Hindu solar calendar.
The holiday is known for its water festival which is mostly celebrated by young people. Major streets are closed to traffic, and are used as arenas for water fights. Celebrants, young and old, participate in this tradition by splashing water on each other. Traditional parades are held and in some venues "Miss Songkran" is crowned,  where contestants are clothed in traditional Thai dress. A fun time for all, Songkran is well worth experiencing!

Wat Sila Ngu (translated as Stone Snake Temple) is often missed by visitors to the island, yet it is one of Samui’s most intriguing temples.
The temple is a work in progress and currently remains unfinished as it has yet to be painted. However, this fact is what gives this temple it’s unique character as currently the entire structure is a red clay colour giving it a mysterious look, some visitors have coined the name ‘The Red Dragon Temple’ to describe it’s appearance.
The entire building is decorated with ornate sculptures depicting Buddha’s life and features many of the characters and creatures associated with Thai Buddhism.Wat Sila Ngu is easy to get to- situated in the South East of the island just off the main ring road. Well worth a visit if you are in Koh Samui.
