Brainstorming:
creating a user interface for an app connecting the elderly with grocery shoppers that can deliver groceries to their home
in my experience they don’t like apps much
Website and poster
but if we came up with a pretend service we could design a site homepage
and also a flyer with a number
so it covers both audiences and what they’re comfortable with

Ideate:
List of participating stores on interface: Safeway Whole Foods Target Tamuras Times Market
shima’s
Down to Earth
Don Quijote
Nijiya
Long’s
Walgreen
Foodland
Walmart Where to put flyers advertising service and website:
Newspaper rack
we could also maybe put it in doctor’s offices? maybe offices that specialize in aging diseases
or degenerative disorders
Customer service line maybe include pharmacy delivery?
or over the counter medicines
Refine:
Decided to leave out a few stores in the design if they were more obscure or not as many locations available in the state.
Possible service/business name:   Kukui Grocery Delivery?
Design choice:  flyer and website (sketches)

Participation: Article of An Age Friendly Environment
This article talked things about older people that younger people don’t know and what we need to care when we come up with some UX and UI. The ideal size of the type is 16pt, and San serif is better. Also, when we use icons, it is better to put type with them. They can easily lose their motivation, if they experience difficulty, so simple UX and UI is better. I thought those information are especially helpful for my group project which is designing a age friendly website.

Challenge 6.1: Visual Advertisement (Group Assignment)
Tumblr media
What research did you have to do in order to come up with the visual solution?
I didn’t do a lot of research. I just needed visual reference of those illustrations. I searched the illustration of old lady, driver from the side of the car, pedestrian light, and traffic light. One interesting thing I found was my idea of traffic light is still Japanese one.
Why did you choose this solution?
I only thought about #1 and showing two steps was my partners idea. I thought it is good to make it obvious the situation, like one person is driving and one person is old and walking. The most iconic way to distinguish them was traffic light, so I decided to put them. Also, making it flat image can avoid complication and easier to show the eye contact idea and the arrow, so I decided to illustrate like that. When my partner said two steps idea, I thought it is very efficient because just showing eye contact sounded not enough. I thought it is better to show the older lady is crossing the road safely which is our goal of this assignment. We don’t do a lot, but it was good to do group assignment.

Reflection of Turning Policy into Public Action
It was interesting that how a big event whether it is positive or negative, can change people’ life that much. I don’t have same experience as them, so I cannot fully understand their situations and feel it like a first person of view. However, if designers have more experience and knowledge, we can design something that resonate into the audience, so I thought it is important to experience a lot of things and think how we respond and apply that experience into design.

Choice Posting: an Article about Typography
In this article, it tells why there are all cap functions and how it was created. Also, it talks about how the typography affects the readability based on all cap and how typography affects in our life. One example in this article was typography of high way signs. In early 2000s, an environmental graphic designer and type designer created typeface for highway to improve the readability. The articles shows how they improved and some failures. I chose this article because it was very interesting why all cap was used before and why it has yelling characteristics nowadays. Also, examples that they talked in the article was on point, and how better typography can prevent small mistake that can be a big trouble eventually. As a graphic designer, this article shares informations that are good to know.

Assignment 4: Typographic Poster (Revise)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first one or left one is the revised design and the second one or one at the bottom is the old design.
What were the revisions implemented?
Since my audience is restaurant employees, I added more items that people would touch frequently only at the restaurants. I found the original resources from CDC website, so it is the most common items that anyone can find at anywhere even at the restaurant, so I left those and just added special equipments from restaurants. Also I changed the header from just telling what the poster is to call to action and added subhead as labeling it is a cleaning checklist. The last change was illustrations. The illustrations on the original design was too big and thick so it was competing against the main text. In the revised design, I made them smaller and added more illustrations to correspond the item list. I kept them black because I wanted the design to be similar to the written note, so there is green lines just like any academic note. I wanted those illustrations to be like hand drawing that people do during lecture, so I didn’t want to change the color and kept them as it was.
Why did you choose to implement those changes?
Adding more special items for restaurant makes sense because I was designing it for restaurant employees, so I added them. Only one big header looked a little bit employ, and after I added subhead, it looks there’s more contents and better, so I liked the revised design more. Call to action can attract audience more than just telling what it is. The illustrations don’t bother that much compare to the old design. Those are the reasons that why I changed those.
How has the design solution evolved?
I’ve heard that having more contents than less contents is better in design-wise, and for the header part, I really felt that way. The theme for this assignment was typographic poster, so I had to put priority on text more than illustrations. The balance of the layout was important and I think I could fix that in the revised design.

Assignment 4 (2 Executed Designs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I didn’t answer to the questions in class, I’m going to answer here.
How did using type as your design driver change your execution?
Since the type is the main thing on the design, not graphics, so I think I cared contents and information more than ideas and creativity, which is like what do I want to say, what’s the useful information, what people should know, and what people should be more aware.
Did you find it difficult to “speak” to your audience?
My audience is employee and more specifically restaurant workers. My dad runs a restaurant, so I imagined what they should be aware while working at the restaurant and researched and designed. I don’t think it was difficult to speak to them maybe because I know their job and I also have experience of working as waiter at there.
What design elements did you use in your design?
I think I used all, which is contrast, white space, alignment, hierarchy, and color. There is contrast of black and white, San serif font and script font, white space, there are all left, center, and right alignments, hierarchy in size and font weight, and colors.
Do you think you chose the right typeface?
I think so (hopefully). Bold condensed font for something important but long sentence and all cap. Cheerful type for the lists like hand writing, but legit san serif, not script. Readable and neutral typeface for detailed information at the bottom. Very bold and strong typeface for the second design and script font as contrast and to go with the san serif.

Design Challenge 5: 5 Type Hierarchy Studies
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, what was your design strategy?
At the beginning, there was so much limitation, so I focus on stay clear. Negative space is part of the design elements, so I tried to distribute comfortable space around type. Also, to add hierarchy, I kept thinking which information is more important than other.
Why did you choose particular typeface?
The typeface I used is called “Chaparral Pro.” In this kind of design, I see a lot of people using San-serif typeface, I wanted to challenge a little bit, so I chose serif. The contents was about storytelling, so I chose typeface that has welcoming and friendly, but solid and bold characteristics that matches to the theme “storytelling.”

How well did you do?
The score is pretty good I think, but pretty much all of them were not perfect, and a few of them were pretty bad, so I thought it still can be better.
Was the outcome expected (in other word, did you do as well as you think you would have?)
It was unexpected. I thought it was going to be lower than my score. If one letter is wrong, all of the other letter become wrong too. If the word is long, it made the score worse. That was how I received bad scores for a few of them. I highly doubts his website’s score system to be honest.

Review Project 1: Feedback from Peers
Was the overall goal of the project met? Why or Why not?
I think it was. I wanted to attract people with my design to remind them no littering and I received a lot of positive comments, that they thought it is creative and fun. Also, when I was coming up with ideas, what kind of situation make them litter, so I didn’t pay attention to the location that much, but my classmates said my designs are placed at appropriate places, so I am glad.
What could you have differently in your creative and design process that would make your project more impactful?
I am pretty satisfied with my ideas and I believe they have enough impact. However, even I wanted to keep them simple, adding more information about littering is interesting for users, like adding facts about how littering is destroying the nature. It would raise more awareness and my design could have more impact.
