Eligibility Criteria For The CDS Exam

CDSE is conducted by UPSC twice a year. Here is the eligibility criteria for CDS exam :

CDS Eligibility Criteria:

Nationality: Candidates must be

(i)  A citizen of India,

             or

(ii) A subject of Bhutan,

             or

(iii) A subject of Nepal,

             or

(iv) A Tibetan refugee who came India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India,

             or

(v) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries (Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam) with the intention of permanently settling in India.

****Candidates belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) should be a person who has a certificate of eligibility issued by the government of India.

Physical Standards:

(1) Height Parameters : The minimum acceptable height for male candidates is 157.5 cm, 157 cm for Navy and 162.5 cm for Air Force. For women candidates, the minimum height is 152 cms.

****For Gorkhas and candidates belonging to North-Eastern regions, Garhwali and Kumaon, the minimum height will be 5 cm less.

****In case of candidates from Lakshadweep, the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cm.

(1) Candidates must be physically and mentally fit according to prescribed physical standards.

(2) Permanent body tattoos are only permitted from inside of the elbow to the wrist and on the reverse side of the palm. Permanent body tattoos on any other part of the body are not acceptable.

****Tribes with tattoo on the face or body as per their customs and traditions will be permitted on a case to case basis

Dental Health: The candidates should have healthy gums and teeth and should not be suffering from severe pyorrhea. A minimum of 14 dental points are acceptable. When 32 teeth are present, the total dental points are 22.

Ear Health: The hearing should be normal. A candidate should be able to hear a forced whisper with each ear at a distance of 610 cms. in a quiet room. There should be no evidence of present or past disease of the ear, nose and throat. Audiometric tests will be done for AF. Audiometric hearing loss should not be greater than 20 db in frequencies between 250 and 8000 Hz. There is no impediment of speech.

General physical parameter exercises to be performed at the time of selection:

Medical Standards for NDA:  

1)    Candidate’s Blood pressure should be normal.

2)    There should be no symptoms or any sort of organic disease of the heart and blood vessels.

3)    Any disease of skin which is likely to cause disability or disfigurement will also be considered as a cause for rejection.

4)    Candidate should not have any past history of mental breakdown or fits.

5)    There should be no signs of piles.

6)    Urine samples of the candidate will be tested and if any abnormality is detected, it will be a cause for rejection.Hernias, if not operated properly will make a candidate unfit. In case of operated Hernia, a minimum of 6 months has to pass prior to final medical examination before commencement of the course.

7)    There should be no enlargement of liver or spleen.

8)    Any evidence of disease of internal organs of the abdomen will be a cause for rejection.

9)    Candidate should not have any past history of mental breakdown or fits.

10) No bony deformities like chest wall deformities, Elbow deformities, Finger deformities Knock Knee, Bowlegs and deformities of feet and toes should be present.

11) Past medical history of diseases or injury of the spine or sacroiliac joints, either with or without objective signs which have prevented the candidate from successfully following a physically active life, is a cause for rejection for commissioning in IAF. History of spinal fracture/prolapsed intervertebral disc and surgical treatment for these conditions will entail rejection. The following conditions detected radiologically during medical exam will disqualify a candidate for Air Force service:

The following conditions detected on X-ray examination will be disqualifying for entry to Armed Forces:

1)    Granulomatous disease of spine. Arthritides/spondylosis

2)    Scoliosis is more than 15 degrees as measured by Cobb’s Method (10 degree for Army).

3)  More than mild Kyphosis/Lordosis Spondylolisthesis/Spondylosis/Spondylolysis

4)    Herniated nucleus pulposus. Compression fracture of Vertebra.
