Day 14 (10/12): How you study best

I study best by drawing concepts and main ideas in the form of figures or diagrams.  I would say I am a visual learner.  For example, for organic chemistry, it helps to draw out the configurations in order to embed them in my memory.

What It Does A primary alcohol is oxidized to an aldehyde, or a secondary alcohol to a ketone, through a reaction with activated DMSO. When to use / What you can do with it

When mild oxidation conditions are needed (i.e. for substrates too unstable for other oxidation conditions)

If an aldehyde is the desired product, and not a carboxylic acid

This reaction is frequently used in the synthesis of natural products. Why it’s cool

No toxic metals needed

Oxidation of primary alcohols stops at the aldehyde, without reacting on to the carboxylic acid (not the case with some other common oxidation methods)

Sterics of the alcohol do not affect the efficiency of this reaction

i cant stop thinking about that post thats like, “we need to stop glorifying immigrant parents and focus on how many of their children suffer under them” and its just so true amongst the chinese community. i cant think of a single chinese immigrant kid who didnt grow up with the pressure of having to fill out forms and write emails and handle phone calls and talk to the authorities for their parents, especially parents that refuse to understand how things operate differently in the west. on top of all of that shit, we are told constantly, over and over and over and over, that we should be so grateful, that everything theyve ever, ever done was for us, that if we dont obtain this mark, ace this class, get into x university, go into this profession, that it will ALL have been for naught, that we will destroy the years and years of their lives theyve given to us. they all think theyre some fucking martyrs, every single one of them. even though not a single child has the mental or emotional or intellectual capacity to understand any of this, let alone coerce these ADULTS to do all of it, they act like we should be on our knees thanking them for these sacrifices that we never asked for. and then on top of ALL OF THAT, we get these parents who refuse to get their children help for their inevitable mental health issues (because surprise! when you use the idea of sacrificing your entire life to guilt and pressure your child into succeeding, it doesnt work out so well), who think telling their kids, “just be happy” is a cure-all, who look down on mental health professionals and therapy. i wish i could take every single chinese immigrant child and sit them down and tell them that none of this is on them.
