the way thel’s voice shifts into a slightly higher octave and speaks a bit softer when he finally gets to ask 343 about the truth of the halo rings, his expression upon finally confirming his entire faith was a lie and the exasperation of the prophet’s betrayal, and yet he still tries to reason tartarus 🥺🥺😭
god i just love his entire journey in halo 2 so much

something something Halo not making the women into motherly nurturers and making them complicated and/or career focused and having weird/strained relationships with others is more interesting to me than a lot of other stuff out there.
No essay and not defending how they suck at writing/including women across the board but Halsey is complicated and awesome because of it. Colonel Lasky is a bad mother and that's important to the wider implications on the universe, to me at least. Mehaffey was fun before she exploded. Palmer is so interesting compared to Halsey because they both care about their Spartans in different ways. There's not a motherly bone in Palmer's body. Halsey has fucked up her relationship with all the children in her life.
Tanaka, Vale, Kelly, and Linda all have interesting backstories and motivations.
Something something the best parents seem to die or go missing or make AI to watch over their kids. Shit's complicated. How do you raise children when the world's ending?

More talking about character interpretation for Fred and John, no intellectual rigor or citations here, here's what I just think:
John and Fred both have leadership anxiety (TM) but John copes with it better. Fred has higher empathy (the quality where you feel what others are feeling) and it is harder for him to shut out other people's emotions. Fred can lead, he has natural leadership skills and the way he can connect with others benefits that, but he is less resilient under long stretches of awful shit happening to his team due to his greater sensitivity. He deals, because Fred is loyal and brave and focused and Spartan to the bone, but it runs him down faster than it does John.
John knows this about him. John delegates lots of responsibilities to Fred because Fred is a very capable right hand man, but he takes on the hardest parts himself. At Reach, the groundside op was the one all the Spartans thought was going to be easier. John gave that to Fred because he thought it would be the easier team to lead.
John protects his team by putting his own emotions under lock and key, he's much better at swallowing his fears and presenting a totally unshakable central leadership pillar. He's used to it and he can shut down enough of himself as a person to keep functioning. (It's wildly unhealthy but hey, Spartans!) He loves his Spartans, they are his family in every way that matters, and he believes he has to keep them out of his emotions in order to protect them. He knows who they are, he knows how best to position their strengths and cover their vulnerabilities, and the responsibility for how to use and possibly lose their lives is the heaviest thing in his world.
And, because Fred is his brother and he loves Fred, it is one of the things he tried to protect Fred from.
And then he disappeared. They thought he was dead.
During Spartan-II training, Halsey and Mendez identified four emerging leaders among the candidates.
Kurt was lost, then finally died at Onyx.
Jerome has been missing for 20 years.
John was lost at the Ark.
The last of those four was Fred.
Only Fred was left to take up the job, and no matter how much it hurts him, Fred will always put his duty to his team and his mission above any kind of care for himself.
It's what John would've done.
