I’m not saying I’m definitely an NPC, but if I am a protagonist, the game I’m starring in is probably free-to-play.

An actually emotionally resonant sad ending is quite difficult to pull off, actually. It's easier to write a happy ending that ties up all the loose ends of a narrative than to write a sad ending that is thematically relevant and still feels conclusive without leaving out anything important. This is my personal pet theory why happy endings are way more common (along with the fact that audiences just tend to prefer them overall).
i hate when ppl act like the only reason to not like a "sad" ending is because you can't take it or whatever. personally as a tragedy enjoyer, i hate a poorly written ending. i hate an ending that is just kind of a bummer. i hate an ending that feels mean-spirited to the audience. i hate an ending that's redundant. i love a sad ending that is thematically consistent, poignant, and bespoke to the rest of its narrative.

I will never get over how weird it feels to have tragic and emotional chapters of your life where you just also still go to work, and the grocery store, and see funny videos online all while feeling such paralyzing fear and heartache
life just goes on no matter what
