A Jiang Xi commission by 237Ling for my Waste Land Verse longfic, 161k in three parts. Main storyline E-rated, plot-heavy, multiship with endgame Ranwan, Mei Hanxue/Jiang Xi, and extremely complicated platonic Jiang Xi & Xue Meng.

Summary:

The battle of Taxue Palace changed everything. With Chu Wanning dead, there was no longer a reason for Taxian-jun to show mercy to his wayward cousin. Or any mercy at all.

When one had no reason to live, one no longer feared any consequences.

The Emperor’s ferocity reached a new height. The imperial harem of Wushan Palace grew exponentially with the Emperor’s war prizes turned concubines, each flower more beautiful than the last, bolstering his might against the rebel army. With Guyue'ye’s illusion technique returning the shade of Chu Wanning to Taxian-jun’s arms, Taxian-jun clung to his tyranny, slaughtering the remainder of the cultivation world, drenching the earth in blood, piling the bones into mountains as he had always done.

There was no hope for this broken world but for the Emperor’s most favored concubine, the former leader of Guyue'ye, the grandmaster of those illusions that Taxian-jun could not relinquish.

In these past months, Jiang Xi had been dreaming of an ancient haitang tree.

At some point, they had moved close enough together that Lan Xichen could count every single lash shadowing Nie Mingjue’s cheeks. Tanned skin, warmed by the sun and warmed by that smile that Nie Mingjue reserved just for him, begged for his attention. Lan Xichen’s smile was not as forced as he had imagined it. Still, Nie Mingjue seemed to have picked up on the change in his mood. “What is it?" He didn’t want to ask, but he couldn’t help himself. “Did we… did we ever go to school with someone named Meng Yao?”

From my six years and many papers published in academia, I can claim some familiarity with the system. There isn’t much to distinguish junior and senior faculty in terms of everyday responsibilities, asides from lower teaching load for senior faculty and not having the fear of the tenure clock ticking over their heads. Tenure track junior faculty are called professors, have their own labs and funding, and are full faculty even if they are not Full Professor with an endowed chair. They are nowhere close to grad students serving as TAs or adjuncts who are contracted to teach a few classes. I find the distinction of what rank a modern AU professor Chu Wanning is pretty meaningless unless the fic really wants to delve into the minutiae of academia, and I doubt many people know about the professorship rank distinction. My point is that a professor Chu Wanning who is 32 year old per canon is fully possible and actually very likely to be reality, no matter if the fic explicitly identified him as Associate Professor or full Professor.

I find it so funny reading a modern svsss or 2ha fic set in college where Chu Wanning or Shen Qingqiu are full blown professors, because unless they’re geniuses who graduated college as kids, I promise you they are grad students serving as professors.

Give me the Shen Qingqiu juggling grading student papers while procrastinating on writing his own with Shang Qinghua, gushing about his favorite student Luo Binghe! Give me the Chu Wanning disappearing from life outside of class because he has an exam coming up and a thousand books to read and good student Mo Ran has to dig him out of the rubble of his own filth. Give me the terror of being both student and teacher at the same damn time!

BLUE! I was so surprised to see this. I initially tried black beans because I had read that they could make a gorgeous green…but blue is just as good!
