The Pitch...
Journey of a man who has seen the peak of success and then succumbed to failures and then fought back to rise again.
The Author(s)...
Abhijat Joshi & Rajkumar Hirani's writing is terrific. Adding commercial value into reality is tight rope walk and both of them have done it brilliantly.
The Captain...
Raj Kumar Hirani, do I really need to write how good a story teller this gentleman is ? Isn't his body of work is proof enough ? He is at it again.
The Performer(s)...
Ranbir Kapoor has slipped into Sanjay Dutt's character so beautifully, by the time the film reaches to intermission you may not remember its not Sanjay Dutt.
Sonam, I thought, over acted. Diya Mirza has put up a restrained performance. Anushka Sharma, Paresh Rawal & Vicky Kaushal supported well.

Uma
The Essence...
"Take her to Kolkata now or at the earliest, I am afraid she will not be able to make it till October" says the Doctor to Himadri about Uma (Himadri's daughter)
The Pitch...
A terminaly ill child, Uma who harbours the dream to watch Durga Puja in Kolkata (she is an NRI settled in Switzerland). Her father Himadri (single parent) sets out to fulfill her last wish to re create Durga Puja in Kolkata during the month of March - April.
The Author...
Based on the true story of Evan Leversage of St.George, Ontario, Canada (his mother re created christmas to fulfill her terminaly ill son's last wish). Srijit Mukherji's writing is praiseworthy. Yet I felt the narrative of the first half is tad slow as Mukherji invest it to set up the film's backdrop, which looks stretched. The film gathers momentum from the second half.
The Captain...
Srijit Mukherji is as always efficient when it comes to narrating heart warming stories, he does it professionaly here too.
The Performers...
Little Sara Sengupta own the film, its absolutely her film all the way. Her performance looks natural through our. Well done kid. Jisshu Sengupta Anjan Dutta, Rudranil Ghosh, Anirban Bhattacharya supported her nicely. Babul Surpriyo, and few other artists are competent enough.
The Narrative Binding...
Pronoy Dasgupta has made the film compact. Had he thought a bit more about the slow first half, it would have been icing on the cake.
The Frames...
Frames can never go wrong when Soumik Haldar is behind the camera.
The Melody...
Anupam Roy has created a beautiful album. Aaloshyo is a clear winner for me. Esho Bondhu comes a close second.
The Verdict...
Family audiance is lapping up the film.
The Moments...
Every scene involving little Sara and during the post climax scene when Rudranil's character refuse to take payment for his work and tear the cheque given by Jisshu's character, as Rudranil's character felt an emotional connect with little Uma, brings a lump in the throat.

A young college student Sehmat Khan is sent to Pakistan as a undercover agent to extract information about the war which is Pakistan is planning against India...sounds simple !!!!....but Sehmat's journey is more complicated and heart wrenching
The Authors...
Based on the Novel "Calling Sehmat" by Harinder S Sikka (which itself is inspired from true incidents), Meghna Gulzar & Bhavani Iyer has written tight screenplay, the romantic subplot is so less it doesn't slow down the principal plot
The Captain...
Meghna Gulzar is an efficient story teller, she has handled the subject sensibly and it shows in the films narrative
The Performers...
Its Alia all the way, this girl's expressions flows like water. Her body language from a naive college girl who is scared of blood and injections to a girl who conducts two cold blooded murders to a girl breaking down due to so much emotional stress and guilt is praiseworthy. Rest of the cast members supports Alia terrificaly.

The Authors...
Nandita Roy & Shiboprasad Mukherjeeb; has written a innocent tale of friendship between a girl and a boy and garnished it with over protective judgemental parents and a burning issue. The out come is quite endearing

She approaches renownend advocate Jiyon Mitra to take the case ahead. The client advocate professional relationship becomes personal and complicated as lonley Srimati start expecting more from the relationship.
The Author...
Kaushik Ganguly's writing is extremley matured. Bleding suspense thriller & a complicated relationship tale is never easy.
The Captain...
Experience of Kaushik Ganguly shows in the narrative. He has striked an perfect balance between the two parallel tracks.
The Performers...
Rituparna as Srimati is epitome of calmness. She has done it beautifuly. Churni as Rumki (Jiyon's wife) is equally terrific. Prosenjit as Jiyon Mitra has delivered a restrained performance. Kaushik Ganguly as Pritam Sen (Srimati's elder Brother In Law) is excellent.
The Narrative Binding...
Its a challenge for any editor to make the narrative smooth as thrill should be racy and emotions should be on the slower side.It could have become uneven but Subhajit Singha has maintained a nice even pace through out the narrative keeping it compact all the way.

October
The Essence...
"Where is Dan ? Matlab usney mere baarey pucha. Itni badi baat tumlogo ne mujhe nahi bataya.Abb main usko kaisey batau main kaha tha?" says Dan to his colleagues
The Pitch...
Dan is a regular guy, struggling with his training in a 5 star hotel in New Delhi. Dan's life comes to a complete stand still when one of his colleague (Siuli Iyer) meets with a freak accident and she goes into coma.
The Author...
Juhi Chaturvedi has written a beautiful slice of life film without any needless cinematic liberties or melodrama. The script exudes calmness.
The Captain...
After an endearing Piku, its natural to have high expectation from Shoojit Sircar. This time he fails to a certain extent with the narrative pace of the film. When the opening shot of the film is a long shot of a Delhi metro rake chugging in, very slowly,it sets up the pace of the film.
The Performers...
Dubtante Banita Sandhu is excellet, it was a tough role for her, as she had very few dialogues, she had to express mostly through her eyes.
Varun Dhawan as a regular but flawed guy is equally strong. Moving away from all the commercial potboilers he has done till date, its a welcome change.
The Narrative Binding...
How I wish, if Chandrasekhar Prajapati would have accelerated the pace of the narrative
The Frames...
Painting on celluloid, that is how I can sum up Avik Mukhopadhayay's camera work.
The Melody...
Shantanu Moitra's background music is soothing.
The Loopholes...
Too many medical jargons
The Verdict....
Not a box office success. But, I support every failure as failures shows something new has been attempted.
The Moments...
When Dan tries to communicate with Siuli while she is in coma & Dan's sarcastic comments

Kabir
The Essence...
"Dangaa hindu ra kore na,dangaa musalman ra kore na,dangaa kore dangaa baaz ra" says STF Officer Altaf Kabir to Yasmin Khatun
The Pitch...
After serial blasts in Mumbai, Indian Mujahidin is planning another such event in Kolkata. Mumbai police and security forces swings into action to track down the culprits. Sound simple till now isn't it ? But then the twists lies on how they track down them.
The Author...
Aniket Chattopadhyay has written a thriller which teaches us one basic point "just because some one is muslim doesn't mean she/he is terrorist/criminal"
The Captain...
Shooting a large portion of the film inside the compartment of Mumbai Howrah Duronto Express in real time is never easy. Jerking due to movement the of train, space crunch which doesn't allow a conventional film camera to shoot and ofcourse sunlight. Hats off to Aniket Chattopadhyay and his team who pulled it off so briliantly.
The Performers...
I would vouch for Rukmini Maitra's performance, just 2 films old and her performance as Yasmin Khatun made me feel she is a much experienced artist.
Dev, is not known for acting skills but he is trying his best to establish himself as a strong actor and it shows in his performance.
The Narrative Bindings...
Rabi Ranjan Maitra could have do away with those numerous train passing shots after a point those shots looks needless. Otherwise the film is racy and compact.
The Frames...
Harendra Singh is fabolous be it with a film camera, digital camera or even a Iphone his framing is perfect
The Melody...
Background score by Indraadip Dasgupta supports the film's narrative nicely.
The Loopholes...
Hindi diction of Bengali actors who played cops from Mumbai police.
The Verdict...
More than box office figures, the film should help in erradicating the thought "muslims means terrorists". That will be the biggest success for the film.
The Moment....
When Yasmin Khatun laughs mockingly during the climax, its chilling.
