I enjoy a joke about fucked up German fairy tales as much as the next nerd, but it's genuinely striking how often the source for the really fucked up stuff turns out to be "yeah, this is only in the Brothers Grimm version and doesn't appear in any extant oral tradition, and we're like 80% sure they added it themselves". To a large extent it's not German fairy tales that are fucked up, it's two specific German dudes.

Storyboards for the intro to Super Smash Bros., published on the official HAL Laboratory site in 2000, featuring original drawings of Mario, Yoshi and other characters.

Unfortunately, despite the numbering in the lower right of each page (and the site's source code) suggesting there were at some point 10 images in the set, only 7 of them have been archived and the other 3 are considered lost media.

In Super Mario Sunshine, all Proto Piranha minibosses have a large spherical underground section that is normally not visible. The reason it is there is to indicate the engulfed boat house in Delfino Plaza when a Proto Piranha takes over it and it can be seen under the water; however, due to all of them sharing a single model and only the texture changing, the sphere is there for all of them.

For most other Proto Piranhas, this portion is completely underground; however, the very first one seen in the beginning of the game in Delfino Plaza is on a runway that is above water, so that part of that section can be seen if Mario dives under the water.
