I've been working on this art for the past few days, one of the Saprotrophia couples! Our beloved "Money Troubles"!

I love them so much, and they definitely deserve a drawing together! With a beach theme, for the Summer! ☀️🌊

Meet the Cast: Tylene Charant

(probably should have started with her o-o" the ringmaster!!)

Born: January 12, 1934

Died: December 24, 1957 

Tylene Charant was born in Southampton, England as the first of three children. When she was five years old World War 2 began, and with it the Blitz of her town. The family was already under some financial strain due to Tylene's father getting cut off for marrying a Pakistani immigrant, but the war sunk them into desperate straits. When Tylene graduated high school, she set aside her dreams of being an actress and took up waitressing instead.

When she was 20, Tylene's father came to her with an offer. One of his contacts from work was looking for a wife. Sure, it involved Tylene moving to France, and she'd rarely get to see the family that she'd devoted her life to, but wasn't that the case with most marriages? They needed this.

So Tylene quit her job, and got on the train to Dover. If she'd waited just a few hours, she would have lived.

In the Carnival purgatory, Tylene goes through her day-to-day under the impression that she is still alive. She isn't the first person that was lied to, but she is the first person with whom the lie stuck. In Tylene's mind, the train had to make an emergency stop for maintenance, and that was when she found the circus. Everyone there really seemed to need her help -- sure, they had a few acts, but no ringmaster! -- and the money was scant, but still superior to her waitressing job. She's good at announcing the acts and holding the rag-tag group together, even if hiding out here is unbearably selfish.

Tylene is on borrowed time, waiting for her father to come find her. She's been dead for over 50 years.

Meet the Cast: Runa Carver

Born: June 1, 1902

Died: August 3, 1926

Runa moved with her family from her childhood home in Leeds to New York at age 16. Two years later, she was married to the son of a real estate empire, a man named Clarence Carver. Over and over again, Runa was praised for the "catch" that had improved the family's fortunes so much. She was a lovely girl, albeit a little unstable, and hey! She had won the attention of a wealthy man!

There is a world where Runa, despite all of the warning signs, grew up to live a stable life. That world hinged on her marrying any human being who was not Clarence Carver.

For a while, she ignored the problem. But it didn't go away, so Runa started to pay attention. Stalking rarely gets investigated, let alone charged. The women reported it, or didn't. Two would disappear before Runa decided that she'd finally had enough. She made preparations and told Clarence that she would be out of town. When he brought his latest conquest home, she was there, waiting.

Suffice to say, the conversation didn't go very well.

After her death, Runa entered the Carnival purgatory and took up the role of jester along with the axe-throwing act. It was apparent after Azreal's entry that the two jesters were never going to get along. Runa views her murderous past as a simple necessity. Azreal, annoying prick that he is, has a ruinously incorrect philosophy about the whole Killing People business. (he feels the same way about her.)

Runa, too, is enchanted with the Ringmaster. Tylene gives her the same feeling as some of those women, but she's not quite sure what it means.

Meet the Cast: Azreal Beumont

cw: suicide, murder, cannibalism, intimate partner violence, animal abuse (if you go to the page), severe disturbing elements.

Born: August 19th, 1910

Died: September 19th, 1940

Happy belated birthday, Az! (art by ishi, oli, and nettie)

Azreal Beumont was born in Rio Grande do Sul to a wealthy Italian father and a native Brazilian (laklãnõ) mother. His home life was unhappy, to say the least. When Azreal was a young man his father moved the family back to Italy. It was there that Azreal became a doctor and got a house with a "roommate," aka his husband, Kaemon.

You must understand that despite everything, this was a man of unshakeable morals -- even trash shouldn't go to waste! Organs can be sold for pocket change, any personal effects can be pawned, and hey, meat is so expensive during wars. In the time leading up to and shortly after his death, Azreal dragged eighteen people to the afterlife with him in this way. Some of them were criminals, some of them were witnesses, two of them were trying to stop him. Among this number was his mother, who killed herself after he was found, but the last person he took with him was his husband.

After his death, Azreal entered the Carnival purgatory as the fifth member of a growing troupe. He immediately got on the bad side of Runa Carver and just about everyone else, where he remains. He wanders the whole of the circus as one of two jesters, participating in acts and entertaining the Audience.

And that little situationship with Death? Well, he considers himself freshly divorced, so -- why not?

I was reading about Azreal on the website and I think it's a really cool detail that he can't control his facial expressions despite his obsession with control.

Hello! ~ Ken.

This is a great detail of the man, his obsession with control is very much in his field of vision. Wanting everything to be the way he wants, but whether he likes it or not, it's all a matter of limitation for him.

Azreal always acted very cautiously, even leaving objects in the same places, in case he needed to change for complicated cases. And his mask may be a reference to his “part-time job”, but that's really who he is: Mr. Beumont is different behind a mask.

He can't control his feelings, expressions or what he says most of the time. Annoying even himself, almost being a reflection of what he wants the world to be. Something controlled, in the most bizarre way, if possible.

But he can't even do it for himself, how ironic, right, Azreal? It's humiliating for him, with his sky-high ego being destroyed by himself.

But always, I appreciate the attention to detail with Azreal Beumont! Any compliments, questions, and more are always welcome!

Meet the Cast: Ellina-Mae Banks

Born: August 18th, 1984

Died: November 30th, 2009

Happy birthday, Elliemae! (art by nettie, ken, ishi, blake, oli, and marsh)

Ellina-Mae Banks lived in Covington, Louisiana up until her death in 2009. She took care of her mother (Lillian) and three sisters (Georgia, Alma, and Mary), and worked many different jobs to try to pay for their care. Eventually, the family's finances deteriorated to the point that she felt that the only way they'd be able to get out of their situation was a big, unexpected payout.

Unfortunately, that big payout arrived -- from a life insurance policy that Ellina-Mae took out on herself.

After her death, Ellina-Mae entered the Carnival purgatory and found herself enamored with the trapeze. She does not know that she is dead, and tries to look after and care for the other members of the troupe as best she can while performing as the Carnival's very own Rodeo Queen Skydive.

Hi there! briar here~ to add on to what my lovely wife said, yes. A novel is currently in the earliest stages of its development, and hopefully we’ll be able to keep you updated on its progress if you like these characters and this world!

The reason that we’ve created this blog is because this project is exceptional by any standard. It’s hard enough to communicate with one or two people— try 11! But what I’ve found is that even through we have a lot of hands and minds involved, that’s a good thing. We are seriously enjoying the community that’s been generated from the circus, and we hope that our ideas will entertain and inspire you!

So, yes, we’re writing a novel. We also have almost 400 pieces of individual art, a handful of writings, a (very wacky) minecraft server, and characters that we love. I am so, so excited to put these people that we’ve created to print, but the nature of the project is in itself more than that.

To answer the first part of your question, this is a world centered around the afterlife. Specifically, what the afterlife would be like if the whole thing was rooted (mostly) in the same biological principles that we understand in the living world. We’re trying to dream up what it might look like if Purgatory itself was a living creature!!

This was a wonderful starting question to get, and I hope you ask more! Thank you so much!
