Following the rollout of Amex Sync last March, American Express is now giving the hashtag a monetary value. As of February 13th, Amex is allowing consumers to buy products directly on Twitter. How does it work? A payment is made when a Twitter user tweets a specific purchase hashtag (#BuyAmexGiftCard25) and then retweets a confirmation tweet from Amex within a 15 minute time frame. The product is then shipped to the billing address synched to the Amex and Twitter accounts. Although this method of payment through Twitter is currently limited to participating merchants and products, it has great potential for broadening marketing to consumers and the burgeoning field of social e-commerce.
