Nakba Fact #6

At least 30 documented massacres took place during the Nakba, the most gruesome of which was led by future Israeli prime ministers Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir in the town of Dier Yassin. In April of 1948, the town was raided by Israeli militia, who went on to kill over 100 Palestinians, including women and 30 children. The news of the massacre was publicised and widely spread, sparking terror amongst Palestinians in other villages who fled in fear of the impending violence.

Israeli historian Benny Morris writes about the over 30 organized massacres that occurred in 1948 against Palestinians “That can’t be chance. It’s a pattern. Apparently, various officers who took part in the operation understood that the expulsion order they received permitted them to do these deeds in order to encourage the population to take to the roads.”
