Rick Riordan and Diversity

People complain about Rick Riordan “beating a dead horse” but HE CAN BEAT ALL THE DEAD HORSES HE LIKES.

Rick Riordan has actively added diverse characters in all of his books to represent more kids. Characters in his books include:

a Arab-American, Muslim Valkyrie (Magnus Chase)

a deaf/mute elf who uses sign language (Magnus Chase)

a Hispanic son of Hephaestus (Heroes of Olympus)

a half-Cherokee daughter of Aphrodite (Heroes of Olympus)

a Chinese son of Mars (Heroes of Olympus)

a bisexual God/Teen (Trials of Apollo)

a happy and loving gay couple, Nico and Will (Trials of Apollo)

a black male dwarf that loves fashion and design (Magnus Chase)

a black daughter of Hades (Heroes of Olympus)

a genderfluid, transgender warrior of Odin (Magnus Chase) 

kids with ADHD and dyslexia (All greek/roman demigods in Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus)

POC siblings of mixed heritage, Carter and Sadie Kane (The Kane Chronicles)

and that’s just off the top of my head! This is not at all a conclusive list!!

When Rick Riordan first revealed Nico, a son of Hades in his best-selling Heroes of Olympus series, as gay people asked him “why?” and he said because he wanted kids to see themselves in his books and that all kids need to be able to see themselves in literature and find reassurance that they’re fine just the way they are. HE PORTRAYS ALL OF THESE KIDS AS HEROES. This is SO SO IMPORTANT

So unlike some people who beat dead horses and don’t even try to be diverse (*cough*JKROWLING*cough*) at least Riordan is constantly adding more and more young heroes and heroines that are diverse, well-rounded, and important.

I love how the fandom complains about Percy being in every new book Rick writes but we still read the book to find out how Percy is doing. our hearts melt when we see his name in a sentence or when someone mentions him. Percy is just an amazing character that we all love and never want to stop reading about. We all complain but deep down we’re glad Rick hasn’t ended Percy’s story

I NEED TO GO SEE THIS ASAP

a list of my favorite moments from the percy jackson musical

i went to see the percy jackson musical on the 31st and !!! it was so cool ohmygods !!!

+ so in the first song the entire cast (all like, nine of them) were on stage and being all ‘so u think ur a half blood’ and then fuckin percy comes rolling out and there’s smoke and he goes ‘look, i didn’t want to be a half blood’ and !!! i almost screamed it was so cool

+ sally spraying febreeze after smelly gabe wherever he went

+ percy singing about annabeth and how pretty she is and when he saw her he was like ‘you’re my dream girl!’

+ annabeth calling percy sexist after he asked her who her father was 

+ ‘i’m not sexist, i love girls!’ and grover shaking his head with wide eyes

+ the entire ‘put you in your place’ song it was so good !!! clarisse’s high notes were on point

+ everyone bashing on their parents at the campfire song and percy singing abt his mom it was so sweet

+ when percy acted like he was gonna jump off the metal thing when he sang ‘all you get are bad grades and a bum rap and a bad rep and a good smack’ i actually cried

+ percy, annabeth, and grover being all hyped up to go on the quest during ‘killer quest’

+ ‘my grand plan’ it was so good !! and the lil knife movements she does are v cool and i’ve had this song stuck in my head since i heard it

+ FUCKIN ARES OHMYOGD

+ he was so COOL like ,,, leather jacket and sunglasses and his voice is just !!! amazing !!!

+ percy dreaming abt tartarus that was amazing like it actually sent chills down my spine when kronos’s voice came over the loudspeakers

+ grover singing about thalia and crying and it was jsut so emotional !!

+ annabeth disarming luke when he asked her to join him

+ annabeth almost kissing percy

+ the dam jokes ohmy

+ GROVER TALKING TO THE SQUIRREL AND PERCY GOING “that’s nuts!” 

+ i laughed so hard and grover and annabeth just stared at percy before grover was like “you offended him”

+ percy having to apologize to the squirrel

+ “Tartarus? Like….. THE FISH SAUCE?!?!?!?!?!?!?”  

+ Mr. D ohmyog

+ “we’re not turning him into a dolphin!”

+ he was so grumpy it was amazing

+ percy sending the gods medusa’s head

+ “they’ll think we’re impertinent!” “…we are impertinent” 

+ sally and poseidon seeing each other again and percy being all disgusted

+ the entire musical and cast it was so beautiful. seriously, if you have the money to go see it, you need to. it followed the book p well and the songs are incredible and the acting is just amazing and it was just great
