“I hate this,” he exhaled smoke out the open window.

“This what?”

“That I love you,” Sasuke said so quietly to the celebrating city that Naruto could’ve missed it. But he didn’t — and flinched, as if startled.

Saying it again wasn’t as terrifying this time. Not as strange. Naruto bit his lip and pulled a cigarette from the pack. Smoking didn’t feel quite as revolting now.

After a minute, Sasuke realized Naruto was being too silent — loud in his silence, almost — and it was starting to bother him. Had Naruto ever actually said “I love you too”? Or was Uchiha just being paranoid? Something unpleasant stirred beneath his ribs, sowing doubt in his mind. He couldn’t ask for it, could he? No — that’d be humiliating. Wrong.

But this was Naruto, who never shut up and always spoke his mind. And since that damn morning, he hadn’t said it even once. The thoughts began snowballing, dragging Sasuke deeper into the swamp of overthinking. The longer the silence stretched, the tighter his nerves wound.

Naruto smoked slowly, eyes on the few fireworks still bursting in the sky, lost in his own thoughts.
