Heretical Naval Raider
Tumblr media
From the Trench Crusade Instagram
The Heretic Fleet maintains naval supremacy on the majority of the Seven Seas: only in the Mediterranean do the Faithful strive to maintain some parity in order to ensure the supply of New Antioch. But elsewhere, the Heretic Naval Raiders are an ever present menace to shipping lanes and coastal communities.
(Continues below cut)
Commanded by the High Captains, the powel of the Heretic Fleet is three-fold. First, there are the Behemoth Capital Ships, built in nockery of the Ark that God once bade Noah to construct. These are enormous capital ships, floating cities that act as mobile bases for fast strike craft and the insidious submarines that prowl the shipping lanes and ambush military convoys. For land operations the fleets employ their infamous Naval Raiding Parties as marine infantry
Naval Raiders' armour is modified to double as diving suits, allowing entire strike teams to infiltrate the shoreline batteries or harbour defences undetected. The diving cylinders of the Naval Anointed (such as one shown here) hold oxygen mixed with unnatural fumes from the Lake of Fire, providing up to sixty-six hours of breathable gas and bestowing a high degree of resistance to decompression sickness. Thus they can stay submerged for extended periods of time, gathering large infantry strike forces undetected right at the enemy shores
The Heretic Naval Raiders rarely have problems in finding fresh recruits: severa mighty nobles of Hell lay claim over the Seven Seas attracting many of their worshippers to the fleets, and there is plentiful loot, as well as many chances for promotion and finding favour in the eyes of their infernal overlords through deeds of wanton murder - despoiling the places where saints once spread the faith of the Tyrant-God the Heretics hate with white-hot rage
A favourite tactic of the Naval Raiders is to sneak upon their target in the cover of night, striking at dawn in honour of the Morningstar, This serves the dual purpose of taking the enemies when they are at their most vulnerable, as well as a blasphemous ritual in honour of the throne that the Infernal Lords one day wish to erect on Mount Zaphon after toppling the seat of YHWH
(I don't see a lot of trench crusade lore, so I'm posting some stuff from their Instagram!)

So there’s this new tabletop game called Trench Crusade that I’ve been reading up on, and here’s some of my favorite lore tidbits so far:
-The whole setting is an alternate timeline where the Knights Templar found a portal to Hell in Jerusalem during the Crusades and opened it, plunging the world into a forever war with demons that’s lasted into 1914.
-The church has made multiple clones of Jesus called Meta-Christs. There’s at least seven of them, and they’re harvested for their flesh which turns you into a horrifying mutant with superpowers if you eat it.
-The initiation ritual for the human fighters of Hell, the Heretic Legion, involves traveling to the gates of Hell and coming back without being burned alive. The only way for a human to survive Hell is to be a bad person, so even the basic infantry is made up of grade-H (for Hell) certified pieces of shit.
-The Heretic Legion has a unit called an Artillery Witch. They use magic to teleport bombs from factories and then throw them at people.
-The Hashashin still exist in 1914, and they use special drugs that briefly send their bodies into the future so they can attack from multiple places at once. They also build up toxins in their blood and then use said blood to make poison knives.
-In the official timeline there’s an event in 1477 that just states “The city of Argos is taken by God and it is no more,” and there’s no elaboration on what that means.
-There’s a lot of little alternate history moments that boil down to “it didn’t happen because Europe was too busy fighting Hell.” Protestant Reformation? European Colonialism? Who has time for that when you’re being attacked by a wolf with a chainsaw for a face?
-Not a lore tidbit, but it’s a genuine miracle that the creators aren’t those weird alt-right Crusades or Roman Empire LARPers, given the game’s general aesthetic and subject matter.
So yeah, Trench Crusade is absolutely insane so far. I’m still on the fence about it as a game, but the lore is all kinds of insane and I can’t wait to see how it gets fleshed out.
Official website because proper credit is important:

Trench Crusade had me at, "The Stigmatic Nuns, a female warrior cult who follow and venerate the teachings of the Third Meta-Christ." (For context, Trench Crusade's Meta-Christ are clones of Jesus)
Like, okay. This is fucking WEIRD in a way that makes it very obvious, even the creators know this is fucking batshit.

A Feldkaplane
Art by Mike Franchina
Trench Clerics who fight in the Great War include a vast array of both ordained and secular fighting ministers of the Holy Word. A good example of such are the specially-trained Militärgeistliche that the Church Militant of the Free State of Prussia dispatches to counter the Heretic Legion’s Sorcerers and High Priests, who pit their faith against the fiendish Goetic Powers of the Inferno.
Due to the importance of their role, (and because of the high blood price the Heretic commanders have set for each Chaplain killed - a price which is doubled by Mammon for captured individuals as these priests are prime material in constructing the dreaded Goetic Warlocks), the Church and the Free state go to extraordinary lengths to train and equip their Chaplains with the finest weapons and armour.
In battle these Prussian Trench Clerics don thrice blessed armour crafted in the Sacrosanct Workshops beneath Köln cathedral. They are styled after the armours of a bygone age to inspire the troops, but their fuctionality is state-of-the art as they utilise the latest metallurgical innovations from the Königsberg Institute of Warfare. The location of the workshops is not without controversy, as both the Free State of Prussia and the Holy Roman Empire claims ownership of Köln. This dispute stems from the time when the Free State seceded from the Empire after holding its first democratic elections. These elections were originally instituted specifically to gain independence from the Empire, but proved immensely popular with the people and have remained in place ever since. Luckily for Prussia, the Church considers the war effort more important than petty regional squabbles, and has thus far placed the Cathedral under their care in order to keep the war production going.
The Chaplain’s superb armaments are not just limited to protection: they also carry special grenades filled with myrrh, hemlock and burning incense, as well as classified chemical substances. When detonated the shrapnel of these grenades scatters embers that rapidly burn through anything caught in the blast.
The standard issue melee weapon of the Feldkaplane are swords. Sometimes they are blades fashioned after the burning blade carried by the angel that protected the garden of Eden, while others are smaller copies of the mighty brands carried by the Paladins. Many front line Chaplains are repeatedly reprimanded by the Church for their overuse of inhaling “Holy Smoke”, a chemical compound which uses many of the same ingredients as the Martyrdom Pills. But, due to the extraordinary mental and physical toll the war takes on their minds and bodies, the practice persists even though many chaplains are lost to overdosage or have to be retired from active service due to their minds and bodies finally succumbing to the combination of stress, wounds and damage to the nervous system the Holy Smoke causes. The Great Hospice of New Antioch treats hundreds of such cases each year - withered husks of men who rarely regain their sanity. Each Chaplain carries a reliquary with them (from which their original name capellanus is derived from). The Feldkaplane depicted here, Frieherr Rainer Schwentner of the Swords of the Lord division, goes to battle with a carved wooden back piece depicting the Prussian Eagle and a reliquary said to hold a feather of the angel Uriel within it.
