Teoatl

agua divina o agua-sol

Uno de los vocablos más reiterados en los textos y que se refiere al mar es teoatl. Se traduce generalmente por “agua-divina” (teo-atl): Inic ce, parrapho: quitoa, quitenehua in atl: iehoatl in mitoa teuatl: Inic mitoa teuatl, camo teutl, zan quitoznequi mahuiztic huei tlamauizolli.

Por otra parte, la palabra teoatl es también parte del conocido difrasismo que refiere la guerra: teoatl, tlachinolli. Dicho difrasismo ha sido traducido como “agua divina, tierra (cosa) quemada” sin que se supiera a ciencia cierta lo que se entiende por “agua divina”. La expresión fue generalmente considerada como una met��fora de la sangre, ya que el contexto bélico sugería esta asociación conceptual. Se podría considerar, sin embargo, otro sentido para el binomio difrástico: el de agua y tierra consumidas por el fuego, por razones que consideraremos adelante.

Ilhuicaatl

Otro término genuinamente indígena y que designa el mar es ilhuicaatl, literalmente “agua-cielo”. Los informantes de Sahagún expresaron lo siguiente al respecto: Ioan itoca ilhuicaatl, in ie huecauhtlaca, in nican nueva españa tlaca, momatia, ioan iuhqui neltocaia, ca in ilhuicatl, zan iuhquinma calli, nohuiiampa tlaczaticac: auh itech acitoc in atl, iuhquinma acaltechtli, itech motlatzoa: auh ic quitocaiotique ilhuicaatl, iehica ca itech acitimani in ilhuicatl.

Según la definición anterior, el mar sería el fundamento del cielo. Es interesante señalar aquí que la palabra maya yucateca para “horizonte” es chuun ka’an, literalmente “el fundamento del cielo”. Por otra parte, en otro orden de ideas, recordemos que la expresión itech ahci “llegarle”, más allá de su significado inmediato de “alcanzar”, puede tener un sentido sexual. De ser así, vincularía de manera hierogámica el cielo y el mar siendo el sol naciente, eventualmente, el producto de esta hierogamia.

Huey atl

La expresión huey atl “agua-grande”, aplicada al mar, surgió después de la conquista, cuando los frailes españoles, en su afán de extirpar la idolatría, impusieron un vocablo neutro y libre de su carga religiosa antigua. Los términos teoatl e ilhuicaatl conferían, de alguna manera, un valor sacro al mar por lo que los frailes lo sustituyeron por hueyatl “agua-grande”: Auh in axcan in ipampa tlaneltoquiliztli, zan mitoa huei atl. En este mismo contexto referente al agua, a los ríos y a los manantiales pertenecientes a la diosa Chalchiuhtlicue, el informante enmienda lo expresado y declara: Auh in nelli,in melaoac, ca iuhqui monequiltia in totecuyo.
