Saturday night fever carries a dark story line that is just as compelling as the films wardrobe, but these two things play into each other as the movie unfolds which what I wanted to capture through the posing and styling of the shoot.
Firstly looking at the garments, I really wanted to create a retro pattern clash between the top and bottom. The model is wearing a thrifted vague crumpled print metallic blouse to capture both modern trend of colour but the metallic to carry the disco theme and add texture. On the bottom again is a thrifted flower-like pattern skirt, the contrast between the purple and red in the skirt against the green of the stems, I felt this carried the green well. Originally, I wanted the model to be barefoot to represent the unravelling but after the group and I researched into the trends through the 70′s animal print was well on for forefront. I then looked to accessories that would work with this, using a green leopard print scarf and leopard print shoes that were borrowed, these paired with silver glitter socks helped add depth while maintaining the story that the outfit was telling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hair & Makeup
With the pace of the shoot, we wanted the makeup to work with both mine and Sahers shoot as we were both using the same model, we went for a blue eye shadow, I then added rep lipstick and extra mascara to achieve the next stage which was soaking cotton balls and using this to immediate tears and also smudged the lipstick and messed up the hair by adding volume to reflect the turmoil that happens when breaking point happens.
The context of the shoot
As we had decided about the story board theme through the use of the destruction of the disco ball, but also the lighting we used. I decided on a yellow and red light to reflect the disco heritage of the movie but also the red light stood for danger and warning and was used behind the model and the yellow in front to try and create the illusion that the viewer is opening a door and seeing this final moment within the story. The yellow light beaming through was a representation of hope, brighter days.
Tumblr media
This was the original inspiration that I wanted to experiment with, instead of the lighting being above if it was in front of the model on the left to immediate a opening door.
Tumblr media
Editing
As the i edited and selected final images, I wanted the image to be sharp to ensure that the details in each garment were picked up but also adding grain to add that vintage, polaroid-like effect that images from the 70′s would have now.

Saher’s styling
style:
After researching into the style icons at the time of Saturday Night Fever I knew I wanted to create a look that was very much Cher inspired. I feel as though her style really captured the 70s but was also groundbreaking and ahead of it’s time. I think her style was also very diverse and had a wide range between casual outfits and very glam outfits which allowed room for creative freedom.
My first thought when hearing the brief and watching the film was to incorporate flares as they are such an iconic part of the 70s and have also been making their way into modern day fashion which makes them easily accessible. For the flares, I chose a standard black pair as they were sleek and not too busy making them easy to pair with a bright coloured top and other accessories.
When it came to finding a top I thought would match Cher yet also be modern I looked down many different routes. My initial thought was to look into either silk shirts or floral shirts which would be buttoned down and tied as it was commonly seen and links the idea of a blurred line between masculinity and femininity. However, I was not able to find one that I thought was bold enough or really incorporated Cher’s style.
Tumblr media
I decided to use this outfit as inspiration for my top as it reminded me of a current trend that has been taking over social media platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram. The trend includes using a scarf and wrapping it in a way in which it turns into a functioning top. I particularly love this trend as it brings new life to clothing that would be otherwise thrown away or never used.
I was able to find two scarfs which I thought had a great pattern and would be ideal for the shoot. these two options where:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end I picked option number two as I loved the bright colours and really liked the almost psychedelic pattern that I felt screams 70s.
To finish the look I accessorised with black, block heels, gold jewellery which complimented the black of the flares and the gold on the scarf and a blue eyeshadow look with long straight hair to pay homage to Cher in the 70s.
Shoot day:
When it came to shoot day I decided it would be best to be in campus and take advantage of the lighting available. This is because I wanted to recreate disco style lighting much like the one in the picture below:
Tumblr media
The mix of the blue and the red to create an almost purple effect rally screamed disco to me and was perfect for the shoot.
After we were able to replicate the lighting we began with the posing which consisted of a straight face which showed power but also a darkness which was also seen in the film.
Some of my favourite pictures from the shoot include:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My personal favourite out of the three would be the last as I love how you can see the full outfit and the pose with the disco ball shows the decline of the happy disco scene. In order to give the image the full Saturday Night Fever effect I then decided to edit the photo by adding a gain and changing the contrast and saturation.
Tumblr media
I love this image and really think it works well with the others in my group whilst also putting a modern spin on the Saturday night fever theme.

Some of my favourite images from my photoshoot, unedited
I tried to create a modern fashion outfit but to also bring in the 70s themes and trends. I chose the animal print crop top as one of my items of clothing because it gave off a very disco/70s/ party vibe. As well as this whilst looking at WGSN I found that for S/S 21 a popular upcoming trend was abstract and animal type prints, therefore this worked well. With the top I chose black flares to style my model in. Flares are obviously the main fashion piece of the 70s disco era and they’ve come back into fashion recently, therefore I could easily create a modern, new look as well as tying in the theme of the 70s. For accessories I have chosen the iconic pink circle shaped glasses and a blue head scarf as seen on people in the 70s, as well as some huge silver hoop earrings. At first I thought these colours would clash but after playing around with the styling I decided that it makes the outfit as a whole look more carefree, funky and disco. To complete the outfit I chose huge chunky heels as the shoes for my outfit because they again were another fashion staple in the 70s and throughout the disco era. When shooting the style I decided to take the experience of using the professional photographer as we as a group wanted to play around with having a colour theme throughout. I’m happy with the way my images have turned out, I tried to go with some carefree stills of dancing and others more posed so I had a variety to choose from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I have chosen my favourite photo from the shoot and had a play around with the editing and added a grainy effect. I like this close up image as it looks the most editorial out of the batch. I have styled my model to be casually looking away from the camera as if she is in mid shot of doing something else, with the disco ball close up. As a group we thought it would be interesting to see what our images would look like after being edited this way as in the stills from the film Saturday Night Fever some of the images are edited this way

Maria’s styling
‘Research:
Tumblr media
Before styling my shoot I firstly researched into mens fashion within the 70′s to get a more in depth look on all the different trends and types of styling with in that time, as well as that I looked at modern day shoots which have a 70′s kind of vibe to give me inspiration on not only the styling but the poses and backgrounds. I added all these images to a Pinterest board so they was all in the same place and it made me easier to envision my ideas for my own shoot.
My Pinterest board- https://www.pinterest.co.uk/mariajordcockerill/movie-brief/
For my clothing I knew that I wanted to keep it close to the theme of the film and incorporate all the big trends which you see within the film such as loud printed shirts, blazers, wide / flared pants. However I didn't want it to look like a tacky 70′s inspired halloween outfit, instead I wanted it to be authentic to the 70′s fashion however add a more modern feel.
Harry styles:
Tumblr media
I found that Harry Styles has a very 70′s feel fashion style and it is exactly the style which I was envisioning for my own shoot so I looked further into campaigns/ music videos and pap pictures he is in to see the variations of his dress sense. I love how he wears clashing prints, mixes textures and wears a lot of the iconic patterns like checkered which was very popular within the 70′s. He also pushes the boundaries and goes against societies normal style for a man as he ditches the pressures of abiding by societies ‘norms’ which reminds me of Mick Jagger in the 70′s. I am going to take Harry’s sense of style for my main point of inspiration as his fashion looks like an updated, modern take on the mens 70′s style.
Background:
As I decided to shoot at home I had to be innovative with my backgrounds to capture the feel of the 70′s and make it look professional as well as also making sure it fitted with the rest of the images from my group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are the first images I took the location was at a underground car park I first chose this location as the area reminded me of the image above from the film with the grunge feel also with the bright light throughout I thought this would picture well and have good lighting. However I decided against this when I went to edit as without seeing the inspiration image for the chosen background it doesn't communicate 70′s and the colours and scenery don't flow or go with the images from the rest of my group.
After my first attempt at my shoot I went back to my research to help me come up with a backdrop which would better fit the theme and match the other images.
Tumblr media
I loved the metallic fringing of this image from the Gucci campaign as it gives a very disco feel, however I struggled to find any so I had the idea to create a similar look with tinfoil.
Tumblr media
I stuck the tinfoil to the wall and chose to do this in the corner as I felt that would capture a better image, I decided to crumple up the tinfoil as it would give more texture and detail within my image. As well as that it also has a similar look to a disco ball with the reflection from the creases and the silver colour which will help my image flow with the rest of my groups.
Hair:
Tumblr media
For the hair I wanted to recreate the same look as the character Tony Manero from the film as this was a classic hairstyle within the 70s. This look was easy to recreate as my model had an almost identical hairstyle so to perfect this I just slicked it back slightly with hair spray to assure it stays in place.
Styling:
Here is an outfit which I styled however didn't represent the vision which I had as I was going for quite a garish look with the contrasting colours of pink and green as from my research and watching the movie the 70′s fashion was full of bright colours and clashing prints. However the blazer was ill fitting and the shirt didn’t have the relaxed fit which I wanted, so I didn't go forward with this fit for my shoot.
Tumblr media
For the rest of my outfits I put together which worked well I decided to shoot these with my background so then I could see how the outfit and background worked together so I could then choose the best one.
My shoot:
I decided to use a chair within my shoot as I feel it adds more dimension and has more of a relaxed look, also I found that when I was taking images the stances when stood up looked slightly awkward and I couldn't get the model and the background in the picture fully.
Tumblr media
This outfit I wanted to create a more relaxed and casual look and something more garish. I found that a lot of 70′s outfits had pieces of clothing which matched in colour. I wanted to create a layered look with the shirt and the jumper vest which is now back in trend however remaining with the 70′s feel with the silky oversized shirt. I feel that this look does look very 70′s however it isn’t the look I am aiming for as it looks rather fancy dress and the colours don't picture very well.
Tumblr media
For this outfit my main inspiration came from the looks of Mick Jagger and harry styles as I wanted a outfit which went against societies masculine views for fashion as I paired a bright pink suit with high waisted pants with a sheer shirt I feel this look is a more modern take however still remains with the theme of 70′s with the suit with the wide leg pants and the shirt tucked in.
Tumblr media
This is my favourite outfit as I think the colours of the deep purple and Burgundy contrast well with the silver background. I feel the shirt and pants paired together is a classic 70′s styled outfit as it is seen all throughout Saturday night fever and my research. I went with a monochrome look as this is both a trend now and within the 70′s with the high waisted straight leg pants with the silk shirt tucked in really gives a retro look.
Final image:
Tumblr media
Here is my final image I have selected I like the relaxed pose. To edit this image I first took it into photoshop and used the clone stamp to hide where you could see the tinfoil didn't meet or was overlapping as this made the background look more sleek. I then went into light room and adjusted the colours and contrasts, I  added a grain and vignette effect to give a more vintage look which helped communicate the theme more.

The idea behind our disco ball theme
As a group we wanted to have an ongoing theme throughout our 4 pages that was more than just the editing and colour themes we had decided. We decided to try and portray the less obvious, darker side of the film Saturday Night Fever. The film overall is very happy, funky and carefree with the disco dancing, fashion and soundtracks but as well as this there are also some serious and not to pleasant themes and scenes in the film. The idea of using the disco ball in each of our shoots came to mind and we wanted to try and show a set of images layed out like a story. Our initial idea was to have the first couple of shoots happy and funky, giving off the stereotypical disco dance vibe, however we then wanted to start smashing up the disco ball, showing how everything is slowly falling apart, until the final scene where the model is sat on the floor in despair surrounded by pieces of the shattered disco ball, looking at herself through the reflection. This theme shows everything starting off fine but by the end of the night everything has gone wrong and fallen apart.

Double Page Spread Edits
Using an order of images to play as a timeline to show the destruction that can be caused by something that could bring you joy. Starting with Marias image and the tin foil background stands for the world around us, our surroundings and how they make us feel. Then moving on to Victorias image, the model takes the very things from them surroundings that make them uneasy and constructs this into a form that is controllable, like a fix to the problem but when in reality it is like trying to put a smashed plate back together with stenotype. Thirdly Sahers image begins to show that although the controlling and managing of the problem, the pressure is building and the handling of the problem is almost causing more issues than the original problem or situation. Lastly, my image is showing the final scene of these situation when it consumes us to a point that we crack and fall apart, these moments are typicaly when we feel the worst, we tried and we failed, we could have hurt people and like in Saturday Night Fever could even lose someone we care about. But there is beauty in this painful moments, we release ourselves from what feels like anchors on our feet, and learn that if we awknowledge how we feel about ourselves and surrounding although is uncomfortable will end a lot better than we try to control it and it ends up consuming us.

Farrah Fawcett
Farrah Fawcett was an American actress, fashion model and artist who became popular due to her breakthrough role as investigator Jill Munroe in Charlies Angels in 1976. However she was also greatly known for her hair and style in the 70s.
Tumblr media
Her big and bouncy blonde curls were iconic and quickly became the look of the decade. Women reclaimed their sensuality, wearing their hair long, layered with bouncy waves and a flick. Highlights started making an appearance too for that sun-kissed look.
Tumblr media
Farah was also known for her street, casual style. It was a layer back approach to the intense disco and punk style. Denim flares were widely popular and so were bright colours such as red and blue.

MICK JAGGER
Tumblr media
Mick Jagger was an icon in the 70′s with him being in the Rolling Stones as well as being an actor and film producer he has been described as “one of the most popular and influential frontmen in the history of rock and roll”. He was also popular for his style choices and he made a statement! By mixing the popular trends and styles within the 70′s adding his own twists and not being afraid to experiment.
Tumblr media
This image of Mick Jagger in 1978 just shows how confident and daring he was with fashion incorporating the trends of the waistcoats within the 70′s but making it his own with his garish styling of the bright red leather trousers. This bold look shows he is not afraid to express himself through fashion and doesn't allow it to take from his masculinity.

Debbie Harry
Debbie Harry is an American singer, song writer and actress best known for being the lead vocalist in the band Blondie. She fired the band in New York in 1974 and not only made a statement through her music but also through her style.
Tumblr media
1978- Blondie performing on stage in a double denim outfit.
As much as flares and platform shoes were a staple in the 70s, so was the ‘cowboy aesthetic’ and the idea of double denim. its a more casual look compared to the disco scene and can be seen as popular in the punk scene of the time. I really like the contrast from the disco scene and is interesting to see just how vast and different fashion was at the time.
Tumblr media
1977- An image of Debbie from a photoshoot with Lynn Goldsmith
This image shows Debbie style and starts to blur the line between masculinity and femininity. She is portrayed as strong and powerful in her camouflage clothing yes still feminine with her intense eye makeup and high heels. I really like this look as I feel it really started to change the views of peoples outlooks on fashion and what genders can wear.
Tumblr media
1976- This photograph is an outtake from Debbie Harry's Punk Magazine Centerfold shoot which was shot in a Bowery loft in New York City.
I feel as though this is the true epitome of punk fashion but also shows her femininity and ability to show off her body the way she wants to. the mix of leather and studs screams 70s punk and are common materials used by those in the scene. its edgy, sexy but also empowering and something id like to think many girls looked to for encouragement to reclaim power over their bodies and dress how they please.

Cher
Cher is an American singer, actress and television personality who was particularly popular in the 70s due to her style and her CBS show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour which was watched by over 30 million viewers weekly during the three years it was aired. She is referred to in the media as ‘The Goddess of Pop’ and is a household name. She was also very popularly known for her amazing style and daring looks which changed the ways of fashion.
Some popular looks include:
Tumblr media
1972- A cutout gown for a portrait session during the The Sonny and Cher Show years.
The cut outs are really interesting to me and show the beginning of expressing themselves without the fear of people viewing them a certain way.
Tumblr media
1972- On the Sonny and Cher show in a white hat, cutout halter top, and tiered pants.
In this I really like the halter neck style and think that the pants are a nice homage to the ‘flares’ trend of the 70s but done in a very Cher way.
Tumblr media
1973- A sparkling gold two-piece set and hoop earrings at the 45th Annual Academy Awards alongside Sonny Bono.
The long, straight hair looks amazing as it allows the outfit to do all the talking and is a great match with the gold.
Tumblr media
1975- Performing in a feathered headdress and sequined two-piece look.
I particularly love the top in this set and is something I have seen to be quite popular in the 70s. This can also be seen in todays day and age with many paying homage to this style but replicated with a scarf with is wrapped around the body.

Pop Culture in the 70s
Tumblr media
Music was at a high in the 70s with genres such as funk, soul, R&B, Hard rock and disco all carving their place in the music world. Music icons such as David Bowie and Pink Floyd all made their appearances in the 70s and had a huge cultural impact on the decade and many decades to come. The 70s was also a great time for cinema as films where beginning to cover all subject matters and stretched peoples imaginations to the limits with films such as mafia pictures, mental asylum films and films in another galaxy. Movies that we know today such as A clockwork Orange, Star Wars and Rocky Horror Picture Show where all popular in the 70s and are still admired today for their style and storylines. It was a time of liberation and excitement that has changed the way we live, dress and think.

What’s going on in the 70s?
Within the 70′s many defining events took place with the revolution of technology with both Microsoft and apple which was founded in 1975-1976 making America responsible for the most innovative and popular technology.
The feminist movement was carried throughout the 70′s which had a prominent role within society, it was in 1971 when the first domestic violence shelter opened, which then sparked inspiration and happened within other countries. The 70′s was the time where feminism finally reached a large audience and brought the women rights movement into national political spotlight.
The disbanded of The Beatles also occurred with the official breakup in April 1970 where Paul McCartney publicly stated that he was no longer remaining in the band. This had an impact as music was a massive part of the 70′s with the Beatles dominating the music industry and being such a highly influential band with great diversity.
As well as that many historical events happened as the first ebola outbreak hit, the Munich massacre, the Vietnam war ends as well as Margaret Thatcher becomes the first female prime minister of great Britain.

Urban spaces of Berlin, from a rooftop to a warehouse club are the raw backdrop to the Spring Summer 2016 advertising campaign. Shot by Glen Luchford, the artistic and brutalist nature of this city contrasts against the dreamy romance of Alessandro Michele’s collections.
I thought this Gucci collection was perfect to research in to as it shows modern trends merged with an old but new style. 70s fashion is being recycled and altered in this campaign and in our project we are aiming on creating a photoshoot with a similar concept

Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
The Saturday night fever soundtrack is one of the best selling albums within history with 40 million copies sold worldwide. The album remained at the top of the charts for 24 weeks in the United States. Some of the tracks included “more than a woman”, “night fever” and “boogie shoes”. The soundtrack revolutionised the music industry with rock and other genres like abba, Elton and David Bowie adding slinky guitar and insistent back beat to their songs to save them from the domination of disco. The sound track made a big impact within the 70′s culture.
