In your opinion how much blame should be placed on someone who started a trend/concept be blamed for where it goes in the future? Like how much blame should be placed on Tim Curry (or anyone else involved in Rocky Horror) for parts of the LGBT community deciding his character from Rocky Horror had to be an icon and a Pride Month "must watch?" Or how responsible is Alan Moore for Barbara Gordon being in a wheelchair for two IRL decades because writers/fans kept having "Killing Joke" be canon?

Tim Curry has SOME responsibility, but not the lion’s share of it. Because he might have agreed to play the part, but he did not actually decide what was IN that part.

That goes to Richard O’Brien. And there’s a reason that Rocky Horror was so transmisogynistic. Because Richard O’Brien is transmisogynistic.

People try to argue against Rocky Horror being transmisogynistic because Curry’s character isn’t trans, but a cross dresser. But there’s a reason the character is like that. Because that’s what the creator believes trans women to be. And he maintains this position. He agrees with Germaine Greer that trans women can never be women. He even pushes the idea that trans women can never authentically be women, but rather an “idea of womanhood.” You know, that bullshit gender-essentialist nonsense that Contrapoints is always prattling on about?

He’s a fucking loathesome hack.

And what makes it worse is that Richard O’Brien is genderfluid. He should fucking know better. A cis actor in the 1970′s can be said to have “not known better” providing his attitude is vastly different in 2020. But a trans person writing that character in the 1970′s is very much in the “SHOULD FUCKING KNOW BETTER” camp.

You know who else is in the “Should fucking know better” camp? The trans woman who willingly played that exact same character… IN 2016!

But honestly I have no ill will toward Curry OR Cox. Because in the 70′s nobody gave a shit. Nobody questioned it for a moment. In even today, cis gays have spent a long time gaslighting the rest of the LGBT community into believing that Rocky Horror is an “iconic” part of our “culture.” They’re not the ones responsible for making it.

Do I believe Tim Curry and Laverne Cox are transphobic? No.

Is Richard O’Brien transphobic? Yes. He absolutely is. And he can go and royally fuck himself with a rusted pair of scissors.
