First Meetings
Savannah was one of the best at her job. It’s why the CIA liaison with her regularly, especially when their assets fucked up and got themselves caught. But that wasn’t how they met, how this all started. Oh, no. Savannah met Lloyd Hansen on a day that she knew she’d never forget. She was there to explain why the CR team was never to be caught. Because if she was called in… Well, you weren’t going to be working for the agency much longer. Of course, he had to smart off.
“And what if we want you called in?” He’d smarted off while Fitzroy had been standing there.
“You don’t want me called in, darling.” She’d answered, looking at Fitzroy. “That one is going to be a pain in your ass.”
He’d tailed her home, was waiting for her in the living room of her house. She was fine with it. She’d know the moment he’d smarted off they were headed for a very fiery spiral. Now whether or not it was going to end that way? Well she wasn’t sure about that now. But it was about to start getting fun.
“I see they trained you well so far.” She set her stuff down, moving around as if it was normal to have him waiting on her. “Would you like a glass of wine? Or would you prefer stronger?”
“This doesn’t even bother you, does it?” He returned, watching her.
“You’re not the first to do it. I’m still debating if you’ll be the last.” She answered, going to her bar and pouring herself a glass of red. “Now would you prefer a glass of wine? I also have bourbon if you’d prefer.”
“Considering I’ve already cased your bar, bourbon.” He moved from the chair he’d been waiting for her in, making his way to the bar to join her. “You have expensive taste.”
“It’s why I have an almost seven figure salary.” She pulled a glass out for him, tossing one of the balls of ice she had already frozen into the glass before pouring the bourbon over it. “I like the expensive life.”
“It looks good on you.” He commented before taking the glass.
She smiled before taking a sip of her wine. She slowly made her way around the bar, sizing him up. It was clear she worked out, she could handle him if she needed to. It was part of the condition of her working with the CIA. They’d trained her to be just as deadly as the CR team for a reason. If she was ever in danger she could handle herself.
“Flattery gets you nowhere, Mister…”
“Hansen. Lloyd Hansen.” He smirked now, looking her over.
“Mr. Hansen. But you can continue to try.” She took him in, the way he reacted to her when she spoke. “I suppose you’re here to try to woo me.”
“Wooing is not in my abilities.”
“And what is, Mr. Hansen?” She took a seat, admiring him. He had a great ass, she’d give him that.
“I figured it was as clear as can be considering how I responded to you earlier today.”
“Well, Mr. Hansen, I do require wooing.” She explained, setting her wine down. “And I don’t take no for an answer.”
“And I don’t compromise.” He answered, looking her over.
“Then I suppose we’re at an impasse.” She answered, looking up at him. “So whatever shall we do?”
“Finish our drinks and see if we cannot come to a mutual agreement.” He answered, watching her.
That was how the two of them had ended up here, in her bed. His lip looked particularly nasty where she’d bitten it. Oh but it had been fun. She was also very certain that this was going to become a regular thing if she had her way about it.
“Can’t sleep?” He asked, barely spooking her.
“Hmmm, I literally had just gotten back from a job in St. Petersburg when I was called in to talk to all of you. It’ll be a good 48 hours before I’m on a regular schedule again.. If I’m lucky.”
“Then I suppose that means that we can continue our fun?” This earned him a sultry smile.
“I would think you would have training tomorrow.” She moved to stand, going to grab the bottle of bourbon they’d brought up with them.
“I do. But sleep is overrated.”
“I like the way you think, Mr. Hansen,” Savannah moved back to the bed, taking a swing from the bourbon. “Shall we?”
The smile he gave her? It only sent her motor running again for him. Oh yes, this was going to be a fiery spiral indeed.

STAYING THE NIGHT PROMPTS
❝  don’t be ridiculous,  there’s enough room on this bed for both of us. ❞
❝  please stay.  i don’t think i can be alone tonight.  ❞
❝  i’m staying,  okay?  you don’t have to be alone tonight. ❞
❝  you shouldn’t be alone right now.  i’ll take the couch,  it’ll be fine.  ❞
❝  will you sleep with me?  i know how that sounds i just mean—  i feel safe when you’re there.  ❞
❝  i’ll be here the whole night okay?  nothing will get to you while i’m here.  ❞
❝  wait— have you been here all night?  ❞
❝  i thought you went home after i went to bed.  you didn’t have to do that— you could’ve at least joined me in bed that couch is shit for sleeping on.  ❞
❝  can i stay with you tonight?  i don’t wanna go home yet.  ❞
❝  it’s late,  you might as well just stay here.  ❞
❝  can you just…stay here?  and hold me.  ❞
❝  i know this might sound weird but,  do you wanna stay over?  i guess ‘sleepover’ sounds kind of childish but.  i think it’d be nice.  ❞
❝  i’m not expecting anything,  i just,  thought it’d be nice to keep you company tonight. ❞
❝  i don’t have nightmares when you’re there.  ❞
❝  i get you’re doing the whole protective thing— and i appreciate it.  i do,  but there’s no reason for you to stay awake all night.  might as well come to bed.  ❞
❝  thank you for staying.  it just gets so lonely at night sometimes.  ❞
❝  i don’t want you to be alone tonight and honestly,  i don’t really wanna be alone either.  ❞
❝  do you wanna stay with me tonight?  ❞
❝  stay,  please.  ❞
❝  i’ll stay.  ❞
❝  i’m staying.  ❞
❝  i’m staying.  end of discussion.  you gotta learn to let people take care of you.  ❞
❝  i’m not ready to say goodbye yet.  ❞
❝  i don’t wanna have to say goodnight.  ❞
❝  honestly i can’t sleep,  so if you wanna stay up with me?  ❞
❝  i don’t sleep a lot either these days.  we can be insomniacs together.  ❞
❝  well,  i can think of some ways to wear you out.  ❞
❝  if you can’t sleep,  there are other things we could do.  ❞
❝  i’d rather fuck than stare at the ceiling counting sheep to be honest.  ❞
❝  it doesn’t have to mean anything,  i just don’t wanna feel lonely tonight.  and i want to feel good for once.  ❞
❝  please don’t go—  i need.  i need someone—  i need you.  ❞
❝  the night doesn’t have to end here,  you know.  ❞
❝  i like it when you’re here.  so stay.  please?  ❞
❝  you’re just as lonely as i am.  might as well be lonely together.  ❞
❝  you can stay but i’m not letting you sleep on that couch.  ❞
❝  chivalry is overrated,  get in my bed.  ❞
❝  you’re clearly exhausted.  you can go in the morning.  ❞
❝  you don’t have to pretend to be fine,  if you need me to stay i will.  ❞
❝  when i said i wanted everyone to leave me alone i didn’t mean you.  i can’t handle everyone else right now but you…you’re different.  ❞
❝  you need someone right now.  and i’m the one that’s here.  let me be what you need.  ❞

Little Chapel
Andy & Savannah get married!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Savannah stared at herself in the mirror as she shopped with her mother and Anna for a white dress to wear for her and Andy’s small little wedding at a local chapel. The only problem was she hated the way everything fit because she was five months pregnant. They’d moved to Newton with little fanfare after their graduation when both she and Andy had accepted jobs near the small town. Well, Savannah’s was nearby while Andy’s was in the county at the district attorney’s office.
“Sav, let us see it please!” Anna begged waiting with her mother. “I know it’s hard but Andy is going to love you in whatever you choose to wear!”
“Anna is right, Addie. Andy won’t care.” Beatrice commented as she moved to go to the dressing room door.
“But I will.” Savannah answered as she stepped out and looked at the two of them. “Nothing fits.  I’m five months pregnant and nothing fits.”
Beatrice shook her head, gently turning her daughter towards the mirror.
“It can easily be taken in with a few tucks in strategic places.” She started explaining to her daughter. “Or you can get something that doesn’t fit you like a glove. It’s spring, Addie. And you know that you’re going to overheat because of the pregnancy.”
“But I want something like this.” Savannah had been moody for weeks. She’d finally decided that she was ready for them to get married, but she hadn’t been expecting it to be an actual to-do. She’d figured they’d just go to the courthouse and get it over with.
“Sav, your mom is right. We can easily make some adjustments. Or why not try something that only fits above the bump?” Anna recommended looking at her. “We can find something.”
She nodded, taking a breath as Beatrice wrapped her arm around her shoulders.
“It’s okay, Addie. It’ll be okay.” She softly spoke, squeezing her gently. “Go put your clothes back on. We’ll go look some more.”
They finally found something and dropped her off at the small house they’d bought in Newton. It had been hard, but her parents had offered them a personal loan - nothing too crazy but her father had told her not to worry about paying it back. It was a present for the baby as he said and he had no expectation of them paying them back.
She’d left the wedding dress with her mother as she came in, sitting down on the couch to take her shoes off. She was about to bend off when she heard Andy’s footsteps on the stairs.
“Hey, you should have called out.” He came over quickly, kneeling in front of her to remove her shoes. “You know Anna wants you taking it easy.”
“No, you want me taking it easy. She thinks I’m perfectly fine.” Savannah smiled as he took her shoes off and set them aside. “How was your day?”
“It was good. Lonely without you here.” He’d been unpacking their stuff while she’d been gone. “Why don’t I order us takeout? And then we can go take a nice hot bath in that soaker tub you’ve been eyeing?”
“You’re selling me a dream… And I want it. But I don’t think I could stomach takeout.” She answered with a sigh. Her food sensitivities while pregnant had only increased since her first couple of months. Andy had had to resort to sneaking his favorite ramen while at work because of it. “How about you make me that amazing chicken noodle soup you make for me when I’m sick?”
“I actually already have some stewing right now.” Andy leaned up to kiss her, closing the gap between them without hesitation. “You go get into comfy clothes.”
That was when he noticed she didn’t have a shopping bag with her.
“Did you not find a dress?” He asked worried.
“I found one. It’s with mom.” She answered looking at him as she tried to relax.
“Okay. As long as you’re happy.” Andy answered, still a little worried as he moved to help her up. “Go on up and get comfy in the bath. I’ll make you a bowl once you feel relaxed, okay?”
Savannah nodded before going towards the stairs. They were pretty well settled for the most part. The baby’s room was at least done and she was slightly giddy that in the next few months they’d be welcoming their sweet little one home. Stepping into their bedroom, she headed straight for the tub in their master bath, turning the hot water on full force as she moved to get her favorite bath bomb out from under the sink. Anna and a few of her friends had stocked her up so that she could relax whenever she wanted to.
She got undressed after tossing the bath bomb into the water she turned on the cold water to join the hot. She was only allowed it to be a specific temperature just to be safe, but it was okay. She climbed into the tub, sinking down into the warmth of the water. It was as if all her muscles relaxed at once, settling herself into the water. When she finally came downstairs, she found Andy had her bowl of soup sitting on a tray with a small glass of red wine.
“Babe… You’re spoiling me.” She whined as he noticed her standing in the doorway.
“You deserve to be spoiled, Sav. You’re doing more for me than I could ever do for you.” He smiled, going over to kiss her softly. “Go get comfortable on the couch. I’ll bring your food and drink over to you.”
The evening was relaxing as they laid there together, watching a movie and having dinner together. It was later that week that they had set the wedding date and Savannah was slightly nervous as she stood with her mother in the church. They were having the wedding outside, but they were trying to keep Andy from seeing her too soon.
“You look beautiful, Addie,” her father smiled, kissing her cheek as he joined her in the church. “Sweetheart, go on and get seated. I’ll make sure she’s okay.”
Savannah smiled happily as she leaned into her father, enjoying his doting for the moment. She was so happy that this day was finally here, even if her dress definitely showed off her perfectly growing bump.
“Andy won’t be able to breath when he sees you,” he continued as they waited for a few more moments before they headed out of the church.
Savannah had wanted simple, which was why she had only a handful of lilies in her hand as she made her way to Andy down the aisle with her father. When she saw Andy, there were tears slowly trailing from his eyes. It was hard for her to control herself as she reached him, handing Anna her flowers as he took her hand.
“You look absolutely beautiful,” Andy smiled, leaning to press his forehead to hers.
“You don’t look so bad yourself, tiger,” Savannah replied as she took the handkerchief she had and wiped his eyes. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” he took a breath as the priest started his normal spiel.
It was a nice and small wedding, the reception at their house with just their family and friends surrounding them. Their vows had been simple and Anna had surprised the two of them with large canvases with their vows written out in calligraphy. She’d gotten them both to give them over before the wedding. Savannah was still loving them as they sat there together after the party. Her mother had cleaned up the house before her and her father had left, giving them peace and quiet.
“I promise to love you forever. I promise to always be your champion and have your back, to never question your feelings. To honor you and your opinions. To respect you always. To provide a safe home for you and our family.” She could still hear Andy saying those words in her head… And she had no doubt he would continue to repeat them when she was having rough days. Just as she would hers to him.
“Where is my lovely bride?” He asked, wrapping his arms around her. “Because that beautiful brain of yours is elsewhere.”
“Just lingering on the ceremony.” She answered, leaning back into him as he held her. “I love you, Andrew Barber.”
“I love you too, Savannah Barber.” He enjoyed putting her name with his. “Though I’m going to be sad you’re going to be using your maiden name at work.”
“It’s either that or people will think I’m taking it easy on you.” She answered smiling. “Take me to bed.”
Andy nodded, gently sweeping her up and carrying her to their bedroom. She’d long changed out of her wedding dress when they’d come home to a more comfortable cotton gown she’d been favoring to sleep in - not that anyone would know because it was one of her normal summer dresses. The two settled into bed that night, wrapped in one another’s arms. And Savannah was grateful for every moment that had led to this one.
JOB2005
Andy receives a piece of news from Duffy in regards to the case involving his son. He gets a little heated and unfortunately it does not go well in the beginning.
Things do work themselves out though.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Savannah was startled when she heard Andy slam the backdoor as he came into the house. Quickly getting up from where she sat in their home office, she found him looking around.
“Andy, what are you..”
“Where’s Jake?”
“He’s in his room. What’s wrong?” She had barely gotten her question out when he had headed up the stairs. “Andy, what’s wrong?!”
She was too late though as Andy had already barged into Jake’s room.
“Did you write a story about being Ben’s killer?” He asked looking at their son.
“Dad…”
“Did you do it, Jake?” Andy asked again. Savannah stood in the doorway watching the two of them react to one another. Even she knew trying to stop Andy in this moment wouldn’t matter.
“Andy, can you please explain what you’re talking about so I can mediate?” She asked, finally moving into the room.
“Our son may have written a fictional story on some cutter fiction website about being Ben’s killer!” Andy answered, not daring to look away from Jake. “Did you do it?”
“No!” Jake answered looking at him. “I swear I didn’t! I mean yeah I wished the guy would leave me alone but I would never!”
Savannah could see the honest fear on Jake’s face as his father’s sudden outburst. This was why Jake had never been in a courtroom while they’d been working a trial. They didn’t have angry outbursts in the house for a reason.
“Andy, how do they know it was Jake?” She asked, looking at him.
“Username was JOB2005.” He answered by turning to look at her.
“Did the ISP for the story lead back to our house? To any of our computers?” She continued with her questions, looking at him. She was the defense lawyer busily working to talk her fuming husband down.
“Duffy said they’re running it right now.”
“Then lay off our child until you have answers. Jake didn’t write it. He just told you he didn’t write it. You do not get to be angry with him for writing it when there is no proof other than the username to tell you it was him.” She could see Andy’s shoulders relax as she spoke. “Now, apologize to our son.”
Jake looked at her, knowing that this was stressful for both of them as much as it was for him. But he had never seen his father blow up like this.
“I’m sorry, buddy.” Andy sighed, moving to sit next to him on the bed. “I shouldn’t have… I know you’ve told us everything and I shouldn’t have burst in here like that.”
Jake kept a small distance between them, still slightly scared of his father.
“I just want to be able to protect you, Jake. Ever since you were a baby, that’s all I’ve wanted. I see daily what the world can spit out in people. I know because of my dad. And you know that. I am sorry, bud. I really am.” He was staring at the floor, trying to control himself. “I just.. Duffy said the username and I couldn’t…”
“I didn’t write it. I promise. Even if I did, you and mom taught me well enough. Vent it to a sheet of paper in handwriting then burn it.” Jake answered looking at him. “I promise I didn’t write it. I wouldn’t even know what website that is.”
It was later that evening when they were starting to fix dinner that Duffy showed up, knocking on the backdoor. Savannah was busily showing Jake how to do something when Andy let her in.
“What’s the news?”
“The internet connection was here. But his laptop nor phone matched where it was posted from according to the website’s log history.” Duffy smiled, coming in. “And Savannah invited me to stay for dinner so I’m taking her up on it.”
“You’re always welcome here, Duf.” She answered over her shoulder as she turned back to help Jake.
Andy nodded, still not okay after the earlier outburst with Jake. He hadn’t exactly wanted to be close to him.
“What’s wrong, Andy?” Duffy asked, looking at him. “I figure you would be happy about that answer.”
“I had an outburst with Jake when I got home from you telling me after we searched the phone.” Andy sighed, shaking his head. “Jake’s not… He’s keeping his distance right now. This just makes me look more like the asshole.”
“He knows you love him, Andy. It’s just rough when you can’t take care of him and be the lawyer.” Duffy offered another smile as she gently squeezed Andy’s shoulder. “He’ll come around.”
“Hey Duffy!” Jake called, moving over to hug her. “Mom’s making her dad’s chicken piccata.”
“Oh god… You’re set on fattening anyone in this house up as much as you can, aren’t you, Sav?” Duffy asked, hugging Jake.
“Nah, just…. It’s either that or we order takeout and one of us has to go pick it up. I’d rather not be looked at like a sideshow freak.” She answered, looking over her shoulder at Duffy. “I’m glad you’re staying for dinner, by the way. With everyone…”
“Of course!” Duffy went over, spying the wine glass that was sitting next to Savannah. “You okay?” She asked quietly.
“Well enough. I thought for a second Andy was going to throttle Jake earlier.” She answered with a shrug.
“You defense lawyered him, didn’t you?” Duffy knew she was good at it. She’d been crossed by her too many times.
“Yep. And of course you come in with the truth that it didn’t come from one of our computers.” Savannah answered as she finished with what she was working on - the chicken - and moved to put it in the oven. “I knew it wasn’t. I know my son well enough.”
“You’ve taught him well enough.” Duffy smiled, shaking her head as she looked over to where Jake was playing with Theo in the living room. “He’s doing okay, right?”
“As well as can be expected. We’ve been seeing a family therapist once a week and he sees someone on his own as well.” She answered, taking a breath. “But today… Andy’s just not been okay since Joanna decided for us to see the genetic therapist. He had to go see his sperm donor.”
“God, that must have been rough.”
“I haven’t seen Andy feel so defeated since he lost his first case that first year we moved here.” Savannah knew it sucked for him. She had wanted to go do it herself but he’d put his foot down. “They’ll fix it. Give them a few hours and they’ll be fine.”
What Savannah wasn’t expecting is that it wasn’t going to be fine in a few hours. Jake had gone to bed without a word to them. She’d only discovered it after she’d gone up to see if he wanted ice cream. It had truly broken her heart at the thought that he was so upset over the accusation that he’d just chosen to go to bed. But she knew he needed his space from them - even if she hadn’t accused him of it. It was when she and Andy were getting ready for bed that they heard the knock on their door, making her curious as Andy opened the bedroom door to reveal a tear stain faced Jake.
“Baby boy, what’s wrong?” She asked looking over at him. Slowly she made her way over, wrapping him in her arms as he continued to sob. “Was it a bad dream?”
They both saw the soft nod as he clutched to her. Savannah slowly led him to the bed, pulling back the covers for him to crawl in.
“You can sleep with us tonight.” She said looking over at Andy. He nodded as Jake crawled into the bed. Theo came too of course, snuggling at the foot of the bed at Jake’s feet as Savannah finished her routine for the night.
Andy was hesitant as she disappeared into their bathroom, the sound of the water running as she brushed her teeth filling the room. He sat down on his side, checking his phone one more time before turning it on to ‘Do Not Disturb’ and sliding under the covers. Jake was still leaving a tiny bit of room between them as they laid there in bed waiting on Savannah.
“Bud… I hope you know I really am sorry about earlier today.” He looked over at Jake, knowing it must have made him feel like shit. “You’re already worried about things you shouldn’t have to worry about. And my blowing up like that wasn’t what you needed. It also wasn’t very appropriate of me either.”
“I know you’re trying to protect me, Dad…. I just… I haven’t lied to you either of you about this. I wasn’t there when Ben got killed. I gave you my knife because I was scared.” Jake answered curling himself into a ball in the sheets.
“I know, bud. And I can’t take away how I made you feel. But I promise, from here on out, I’ll ask you about it first before I start assuming things… because I really made an ass out of myself earlier today.”
“Yeah, you kind of did.” Jake laughed, looking up at Andy.
Savannah came out to find the both of them smiling as she headed over to her side of the bed. They were at least mending their relationship after Andy’s outburst that morning and she was happy that they had talked. Snuggling up behind Jake, she wrapped her arms around him and kissed the top of his head.
“Time for all good boys to go to sleep.” She whispered, squeezing him lightly before settling into her pillow.
And that was how the four of them spent the rest of the night, sleeping peacefully in their little cocoon where Jake was safe and home where he belonged and not even the world could change that.

Birth Day
This is the story of the day Jacob is born.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Savannah huffed again as she turned to her other side, tugging the giant body pillow closer to support her stomach. It drew Andy’s attention of course where he sat on the floor at their coffee table doing paperwork for his most recent case at the district attorney’s office. Thankfully her new boss was extremely kind - being a parent himself - and she was on maternity leave until she felt comfortable coming back to work. But she was also able to work from home if she wanted to for the time being.
“You okay?” He asked, looking up at her.
“I’m nine months pregnant, Andy. Until our little one comes into the world, I’m not going to be okay.” She sighed, trying to get comfortable. “Just focus on your work. Lynn will be angry if you don’t have that case ready before the baby gets here.”
“The case can wait.” Andy answered, getting up and disappearing for a moment. He came back with a tennis ball in hand. “Turn back over. Let me rub your back.”
Savannah sighed, taking the pillow with her as she turned around to present her back to him. Slowly he took his time, rolling the tennis ball against her lower spine where it hurt the worst. He knew it was rough on her. It had been Anna’s worry that it would cause problems with the birth but she’d cleared them so far to have the baby at the birth center near the hospital where she worked. Plus she’d made sure that Andy had her number so that he could get ahold of her when Savannah finally went into labor.
“How does that feel?”
“Better,” she sighed in relief. It made him smile to see her resting even for a brief little bit. “I want ice cream.”
“Okay. What flavor?” He asked, kissing her neck softly. “Chocolate? Or something else?”
“Mint chocolate chip please.” She sighed again, eyes closing as she relaxed more.
“I’ll be right back.”
Andy slowly stood, watching her as he moved towards the kitchen. He brought her back a glass of water as well when he came back w the bowl of ice cream. He set it on the coffee table first, moving to help her sit up.
“Here you go.” He kissed her cheek, handing her the bowl of ice cream. “Why don’t we have a nice dinner tonight? A last night before baby gets here?”
She was about to answer when she felt water between her legs.
“I think we’re out of luck.” She answered, handing him her bowl of ice cream. “Bags are in the nursery. I’ll call Anna on our way to the farm.”
Sometimes she wondered how Andy managed to get them there so easily when his nerves were on end. He was freaking out on the inside and she knew it. By the time they were settled into their birthing room, Savannah felt more relaxed than she had earlier that morning. Their baby was on its way.
“I’m here!” Anna smiled coming into the room, dressed down. “I have handed all my current patients off. No one is currently due right now so I’m here to be one of your coaches.”
“You are amazing.” Savannah answered looking at her friend. “Maybe you can help…”
She didn’t get to finish her sentence as a contraction hit her, making her lean against the foot of the bed. Andy was right there by her side in seconds as he let his hand rest on her back.
“Breathe, baby,” his voice was warm in her ear, keeping her calm even if he was scared to death.
It was the early hours of the morning when it all finally came to a screaming end. Savannah leaned against Andy as she stood, Anna kneeling beside her.
“Okay, Sav, with the next contraction give me a big push.” Anna spoke, hands ready to catch the baby. “One big push and we’ll have the head.”
Andy continued to coach her, lips at her ear as he softly counted. Only three pushes and their sweet baby boy was born. Andy gently helped her to the bed, letting her get comfortable while Anna and the other midwives started the process of measuring and weighing their son.
“Here we go, mama.” Anna smiled, bringing him over. They hadn’t cleaned him up just yet, wanting to give her and him bonding time. “Here he is. All six pounds of him.”
Andy was lying next to her in the bed as Anna placed him in her arms. He couldn’t believe this was their son.
“Hi, Jacob,” Savannah cooed, tears softly falling. “Welcome to the world, baby boy.”
He wrapped his arms around the two of them, smiling as he looked down at their son. Andy couldn’t help it as he finally felt peace in his soul despite everything he had experienced in life. Jacob was perfect as he laid in Savannah’s arms.
“He’s perfect.” Andy smiled, kissing her cheek. “Thank you.”
Savannah looked at him, slightly confused as the tears fell down her face.
“For what?”
“For this. For him. For you. For our life together.” Andy answered, brushing the tears from her eyes. “You’ve given me so much that I don’t deserve, Sav. So much that I thought I would never have. You could have left me when you found out the truth about my dad. You could have told me to go to hell, but you didn’t. And I’m so grateful that you didn’t.”
She pressed her forehead to his, smiling as he pulled her and Jacob closer.
“I love you, Andrew Barber. I promised you forever with me. And I won’t ever love anyone like I love you.” She answered as she leaned into him. “And this little boy is going to love you so unconditionally that you won’t be able to breath most days. You enjoy this, Andy. Because he’s ours. He’s what our love created. And we’re going to do everything right by him.”
Andy nodded, leaning into her as he watched him curl more into Savannah’s arms. This was his family, and he was beyond grateful for it.
Life Changes
Savannah has news for Andy, uncertain of where their life is going.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Savannah hadn’t been feeling well for weeks leading up to their graduation from law school. But she had put it off as jitters due to their taking the bar exam. Their results had come back the week before and they’d both passed with flying colors. And yet she still couldn’t shake how unwell she was feeling. So she had gone to the doctor’s office to be safe.
That was when she’d found out that she was pregnant, that they were pregnant. Despite every precaution in the book, they were pregnant. There was part of her that was happy. She loved Andy, wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. Hell, they might as well be a married couple by this point after they’d both started applying for jobs in the same areas - her as a defense attorney and him as a district attorney. But he hadn’t proposed yet.
Which was why the rest of her worried. They weren’t established. They didn’t have jobs yet. How were they supposed to raise a baby on starting salaries? She knew her parents would help where they could - they were decently well off. But that didn’t help much when their lease was up on their apartment that summer and they didn’t have jobs.
She hadn’t been expecting Andy to be home when she came in, knowing he’d had plans with some of his guy friends to hang out. So finding him in the kitchen cooking had been a little shocking, especially after the news from the doctor.
Taking a breath, she made her way into the kitchen after dropping her keys at the hall table and slipping her shoes off. Savannah grabbed a glass and fixed herself some water before grabbing a pack of crackers.
“Still can’t shake the nausea?” Andy asked looking over at her. “I thought you went to the doctor.”
“I did.” She answered, shrugging as she hopped up to sit on the counter opposite from where he stood at the stove top.
“Did they find out what’s wrong with you?” He was busy stirring whatever he was making, though the smell was turning her stomach.
“Nothing is exactly wrong, per say.” She sighed before biting at one of the crackers. “What are you cooking?”
“Udon. Why?”
“It smells awful.” It was curling her stomach.
“You love udon.” Andy stopped stirring now to look at her. “What did the doctor say was wrong?”
She sighed again, munching on another cracker as Andy looked at her.
“What did the doctor say, Sav?”
“I’m pregnant, Andy.” She answered looking anywhere but at him. “That’s why the udon smells awful. Why I’m literally sitting here eating saltines.”
Andy froze in front of her, a million emotions cycling over his face. He took the udon and pulled it from the eye on the stove, quickly taking it to the sink and sending it down the garbage disposal. Turning to face her for a moment, he walked out and came back with a black box.
“I told you I was going out with the guys because I wanted to surprise you.” He sighed standing between her legs as he held the box between them. “I was going to fix you your favorite udon with gyoza….” he trailed off opening the box to reveal a ring. It was simple. And she quickly placed it as being one his mother had worn. “It was my grandmother’s. Ma gave it to me. He never bought her a ring… but this one she gave me. And I knew I had to propose to you with it.”
“Andy…” she was trying not to cry or feel like he was ruining his plans to propose because of her news. He’d been planning on doing it that day anyways, but it still hurt a little coming after she’d told him she was pregnant.
“I’ve kept it in my pocket since our third date. I thought proposing that soon would… I thought I’d scare you off. But I knew after you didn’t run away screaming when you found out the truth… that I couldn’t live without you. I’ve just...there’s never seemed to be the perfect time to ask you, Sav. And now seems like the worst time but I’m done waiting around. I want to be with you for the rest of our lives.”
“Andy,” Savannah felt the tears welling up in her eyes as he held the box between them still.
“Will you marry me, Savannah Adeline Maddock?” Andy spoke softly to her now, the hesitation and fear in his voice breaking her even more.
“Yes,” she answered, hands gently cupping his face. “Yes, I will.”
His lips were soft as he kissed her, pulling her closer to the edge of the counter. When they parted, he gently slid the ring onto her left hand ring finger, smiling when it fit perfectly.
“We don’t have to rush. We can get married when you want to.” Andy brushed her hair back, smiling as he held her. “And if that’s now at the courthouse, in six months when you’re showing, or after we have our baby… I don’t care.”
“Andy,” Savannah looked him in the eye, trying to read him.
“No. I’m serious. I’m not proposing because you’re pregnant. I’m proposing because I want to spend my life with you. And I want you to enjoy that feeling. So it’s up to you. We can go to the courthouse and apply for our marriage certificate whenever you want and we’ll get married.”
“We have to tell my parents first.” She leaned into him, hands resting on either side of his neck.
“All we have to tell them is that we found out you’re pregnant. They’ve known for weeks I was going to propose. I had to ask for permission.” He kissed her again as he finished speaking, holding her tightly to him. “And we can celebrate later. Right now, I want to get you in bed and let you rest. Because this nausea has been killing you.”
“But…” Savannah felt him lift her off the counter before she could even think of pulling away. “Andy! We have things we have to talk about.”
“Tomorrow. After you’ve gotten some sleep.” Andy answered as he walked back towards their bedroom.
Gently he laid her down on the bed, the covers already pulled back. He’d planned on them properly celebrating their engagement but that would have to be put on hold for now. He helped her get her jeans off, tossing them in the hamper for her while she stripped her bra off.
“Get some actual sleep, Sav. I’m going to run to the store and get some more crackers and some ginger ale for your stomach.” He softly kissed the top of her head before tucking her in. “You and our baby get some rest.”
“Yes, sir.” She answered snuggling down under the covers. She was actually very happy in the moment despite everything that has gone on. And as much as she feared Andy had only proposed because of the baby, she knew it wasn’t. She also knew he was just as happy as she was about their incoming bundle of joy, which made it even easier for her.

Some Days are Hard
This is set in the verse where Andy married Savannah and they had Jake as their son. Follows the show to degree but some minor changes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Savannah took a deep breath as she laid there in their bed. Andy was down with Jake doing the normal morning routine since everything had happened. It had been a rough night for her after the day before. She’d woken up from a dead sleep to her stomach hurting and feeling sick. So Andy had told her to sleep in that morning and that’s what she had tried to do. But when Theo had come bounding into their room, expecting their normal morning run she hadn’t been able to go back to sleep. She was just laying there, listening as her heart hurt so deeply for what her precious boy was going through.
When she finally felt strong enough to get up, she headed down in her sweats to see Jake and Andy working on his school work. Savannah smiled a little at it, glad to see the two of them having a moment since the whole knife incident the day after Ben’s body had been found. The arrest had thrown her for a loop though, wanting to strangle the boy who had basically accused them and led them to Jake as the killer. Even she knew her son couldn’t hurt any one, he hated even seeing blood. That had been evident the summer before when she’d sliced her hand open by accident while working on dinner to be grilled out. He’d been more upset and worried than she or Andy had been. So in her heart there was no way he had done this.
“Good morning,” Andy’s gruff voice made her smile as he looked up at her.
“Hey, mom.” Jake could see the worry on her face. He was up from his seat at the dining room table before she could blink, wrapping her in a hug. “Do you feel up for breakfast?”
“Did you cook?”
“No, Dad did.” Jake answered looking back at Andy.
“We can warm it up if you want. Or we can cook something for brunch.” Andy smiled at her, hoping it would help. She was really feeling the stress of this because she couldn’t actually be seen helping them investigate other avenues. Though Joanne was working on the tidbit about Judas not looking into the IP address of the most recent finding that Derek had spilled his guts about the story written about Ben’s death on one of those murder fic story wesbites.
“I think I’ll just have my tea right now. I don’t know if my stomach could handle food right now.” She answered, squeezing Jake. “Get back to your school work. We have our first family therapy session today.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He was at least in better spirits today after the bail hearing the day before. Judas hadn’t been expecting them to come in so well prepared, but Savannah had known she couldn’t have her firm helping with this. They had to have distance for her to be able to keep working there as well as for her to keep her good standing with the bar - the same as Andy.
It was a few hours later that Andy came to join her in their joint  home office. He sat down on the couch next to her, arms pulling her tightly to him.
“It’s going to be okay. He’s going to be fine.” Andy whispered to her, kissing her temple so softly.
“It’s not him I’m worried about, Andy.” She sighed, tears slowly streaming down her face. “It’s me. My little boy is being put on trial for something I know he didn’t do… Because his so-called friend has made accusations. And there’s no repercussions if this comes out that he’s not guilty for Derek.”
Andy just held her tighter, letting her get the feelings out. He couldn’t blame her. He was at least able to put hands on the case to some degree. She was having to act as if she wasn’t even touching it, and it was starting to get to her.
“He’s going to be fine, Sav. You know that. We’re going to get him through this. And when we have, we can deal with making repercussions happen. Derek won’t get away with this.” Andy whispered in her ear, shifting as she turned to hide her face in his chest. “Joanne is good at her job. She’s going to take care of him. I promise.”
Savannah just nodded, taking a deep breath as she tried to focus on Andy’s breathing. It helped sometimes. She was mid-breath when a soft knock came to the door. When she looked up, Jake was standing there with Theo.
“Hey…. Therapy is in an hour. I didn’t want us to be…” Jake could see the tears on his mother’s face, feeling a little guilty for them being there.
“Come here, bubba.” She waved for him to come join them. Jake settled between the two of them, relaxing as his mom wrapped her arms around him. “You are the best thing next to your father that has ever happened to me, okay? And we are going to be just fine after all of this is over. Sometimes, I just have to have a cry about it, okay? None of this is your fault. You had nothing to do with it. And we know that.”
Jake nodded as he curled into her, taking a breath as she held him. He was close with both his parents, but his mother just made things better sometimes more than his father. Andy couldn’t help but smile, Theo’s head resting on his leg.
“Come on, bud. Mom needs to get dressed. Why don’t we go play with Theo in the backyard before we head out so he can rest while we’re gone?” Andy smiled, looking at him. Theo was already gone and went to grab his ball. He knew when outside time meant play time.
“Go with dad, bubba. I’ll go get dressed and meet you both in the garage.” Savannah added kissing the top of his head before he disappeared with Andy out the door.
Taking the quiet moment to herself, she took her time getting ready for their family therapy session. She dressed simply in jeans and a sweater before heading down to meet Andy and Jake at the garage. Andy was right. They would be okay and Jake would come out of this stronger for it…. But for now, she needed to rely on them both to some degree to make sure her sanity didn’t take a hit.
Verses
Hello Again | Verse One
Savannah and Andy meet again after years of not seeing one another unless through work on the day they indict Laurie for murdering Jacob in the car wreck. This follows the aftermath of that.
After | Verse Two
This verse follows the ending of the show adaptation except that it is Laurie who ends up in a coma, not Jacob. Savannah comes to the hospital the moment she hears about the accident and stays with Andy as Jake starts to slowly recover. Eventually the two move in with her and they slowly become a family but not before dealing with Laurie’s mental break down from all of the events of Jacob’s trial.
The Truth | Verse Three
Savannah and Andy had a drunken one night stand the winter of their third year in law school that resulted in Savannah finding out she was pregnant two months later. For fifteen years, she has kept Jacklyn - their daughter - away from him due to Savannah’s moral compass. When Andy moves Jake and himself to Boston, they end up enrolled at the same school. On the day of schedule pick up, Andy and Jake run into Savannah and Jacklyn... And the truth comes out.
What Should Have Happened | Verse Four
Savannah and Andy are college sweethearts who met in school and pursued their relationship all through law school. It was in their last year that they found out they were expecting so they got married. Upon graduation, they moved to Newton where the rest of the story of Defending Jacob plays out with some minor changes to the story line.  *Savannah does not go psycho like Lori in the end and knows her son didn’t commit the murder.
Fire & Oil | Verse Five
Savannah is a CIA Liaison. She is highly trained in tactical as a precaution should she need to get herself out of sticky situations. This is how she meets Lloyd Hansen before he’s kicked out of Fitzroy’s CR program. What starts off as just a sexual relationship turns deeper. Maybe the sociopath does have a heart after all.
** This verse is a very dark verse and takes place mostly on Discord. I wanted to add this here as another place to have the drabbles.**
Oh one tiny edition that I forgot in the original part under this read more as well.
Derek was also on the sports teams so therefore it is normal for sports kids to have a second set of clothing at school. Derek could have performed the murder and passed the clothes off as mud stains to his mother. Jake wasn’t on any teams and would have been late if he went home to change clothes.
Why I Think Jacob Didn’t Do It A Short Essay
Sorry to say this will have spoilers so read below the read more at your own risk.
So, I had this moment of want to rewatch the series now that I’m back at my apartment with a much better internet connection and wanting to work on some stuff to post here headcanon wise among other things.
Jacob did not do it.
Why do I say this?
Based on my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and what we know about serial killers/murderers in general, we know one thing to be true: the UNSUB always re-visits the crime scene. Remember this, because we’re gonna go Criminal Minds here. Serial Rapists, Killers, and Pedophiles all generally keep that same MO no matter what. Revisiting the sites where the actions took place brings back the feelings in the heat of the moment.
Why do I say this as if it has meaning?
Remember in episode 1 after Ben’s body has been found and the cops are doing a canvas for any evidence that might have been scattered by the perp? Patz pulls up in an attempt to go through and we later see him deleting pictures of Ben off of his phone. It’s a good bet that he most likely did this based on these tiny pieces of evidence.
But I’m really working on a defense for Jake here. So let us continue to our other potential UNSUB: Derek Yoo.
We learn later in the series that Derek stole Ben’s phone due to his obsession with Sarah. But I’m jumping ahead of myself.
When we see Jake calling Andy in episode one, Jake is seriously scared. You can tell by his voice that he’s completely concerned with a shooter being in the school. Sure he asks Andy if he knows what’s going on. But as we know, Derek states that he never saw something different about Jake that morning.
Sorry, but their forensics is a little shit in the show. The UNSUB still would have ended up with some type of transfer from Ben between the stabbing and also, I don’t believe shit about their not being defensive wounds unless the first stab managed to kill him which would be kind of impossible depending on the strength of the UNSUB due to the fact that if the stabs were to the upper chest, it is quite impossible for someone of Jake’s tiny stature to manage to force a knife through a breast bone let alone pull it out. Even with an adrenaline rush I don’t think it would be possible.
Which is where Derek comes in. We know Derek plays lacrosse and it does require some physical strength. It is possible that Derek could have done it with a knife that was either similar or exactly like Jake’s so that it could easily be blamed on him. Not such a good friend, right? He immediately starts throwing the accusation at Jake and outing all of his secrets.
Also, when Sarah is finished being questioned by Andy and Duffy, the first thing he asks her is what did she tell them? I mean, guilty right there in my opinion. He knows that she knows something happened. And she tries to point Andy in that direction.
The Cutter fiction was posted three days after the murder. It’s proven that ALL of what was in it was based on what had been released to the press and nothing unknown to the public was revealed. If a killer was going to write cutter fiction, there is no way that they would have been able to help themselves. There’s a criminal minds episode for this called The Gathering from 2013.
But let’s be super honest on facts that are NEVER brought into this show that is a general fact:
Kids under the age of 18 almost always profile as narcissists
Why is that? This is because until about 18 the adolescent brain is pretty much still developing. They’re focusing on everyone else around them to figure out how they should be processing their emotions. You learn from your parents and the adults around you.
So if the adults are being chill, guess what? The kids will do the same.
But all in all, the more I dive into Derek’s actions, the more I just keep thinking he did it....
Jacob is straight up innocent though. Like Andy said, no one can keep up that level of deception. At some point they will break and kids are made to handle that level either.
