The Legend of the Axolotl
In Aztec mythology, the god Xolotl feared death so he transformed into an axolotl to escape sacrifice.
He hid in the water, staying soft and strange, defying transformation. Now, his namesake lives only in one shrinking lake in Mexico.

Scientists Are Obsessed with Axolotls
Did you know? Axolotls are literally being studied to help cure human diseases. Their regenerative abilities are helping researchers understand how we might heal spinal injuries, regrow organs, or even slow aging.
Unfortunately they are going extinct so we’re working to protect the actual creatures behind these breakthroughs, not just the science.

Avoid any Roommates
Axolotls are solitary creatures and are not the best tank mates for other species. They can stress out other fish, and if they’re too small, they might even be eaten by the axolotl!
Axolotls are territorial, and can become aggressive or even stressed when the wrong creature is added to their habitat.
If you really want to get a friend its best to be another axolotl of the same size and gender.

Axolotl Water Care
You must cycle your tank before adding your axolotl. Even a little ammonia can hurt your axolotl and make it sick. Be sure to dechlorinate the water if you're using tap or any other water source.
The waters PH level must be between 7.4-7.6 and a temp between 60F to 70F is ideal.

Axolotl Feeding Tips and Reminder
Axolotls are carnivores, so they need a high-protein diet. Axolotls love earthworms, pellets, and the occasional treat like bloodworms.
Avoid feeder fish, raw meat, or anything from your fridge. These can introduce disease or mess up their digestive system.
Juveniles: must be fed daily
Adults: 2-3 times a week

Axolotls Home
Axolotls are native to Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in Mexico, two breathtaking freshwater lakes in the Valley of Mexico. 🌊✨ Because these lakes are their only natural habitat, wild axolotls are incredibly rare to see. Sadly, habitat destruction has made them critically endangered.

Why Are They Endangered?
Axolotls are officially critically endangered according to the IUCN. The biggest threats? Pollution, habitat destruction, overfishing, and invasive species. Mexico City’s rapid expansion has drained much of their natural habitat, while introduced fish species like carp and tilapia eat axolotl eggs. Every year, their population shrinks, but we can help by supporting conservation programs and raising awareness! 🌍💙
