3 Dead, 2 Injured After Shooting Near University of Cincinnati

A shooting near the University of Cincinnati campus left three people dead and two others injured in the early hours of Monday morning. According to WXIX-TV, WCPO-TV, and USA Today, officers from the Cincinnati Police Department were patrolling the area of Highland and East University avenues at 2:50 a.m. when they heard multiple gunshots nearby. Students were notified about the incident minutes later. "UC Emergency- Police responding to emergency reported on Highland/E University. If safe, stay at your location. While the incident remains under investigation, police reportedly saw someone run into a home with a firearm, and was later placed in police custody. And then he comes in and we're now laughed at," Trump said.After he was prompted by a moderator to answer whether he violated his oath of office that day by rallying his supporters seeking to block the certification of Biden's Electoral College victory and not acting for hours to call them off as they raided the Capitol, Trump sought to blame then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.Biden said Trump encouraged the supporters to go to the Capitol and sat in the White House without taking action as they fought with police officers."He didn't do a damn thing and these people should be in jail," Biden said. "They should be the ones that are being held accountable. And he wants to let them all out. And now he says that if he loses again, such a whiner that he is, that this could be a 'bloodbath'?"Trump then defended the people convicted and imprisoned for their role in the insurrection, saying to Biden, "What they've done to some people that are so innocent, you ought to be ashamed of yourself."The former president has allied himself with Jan. 6 rioters and sometimes opens his rallies by playing a rendition of the national anthem performed by people jailed on riot-related charges.Trump and Biden entered the night facing stiff headwinds, including a public weary of the tumult of partisan politics and broadly dissatisfied with both, according to polling. But the debate was highlighting how they have sharply different visions on virtually every core issue - abortion, the economy and foreign policy - and deep hostility toward each other.Their personal animus quickly came to the surface. Biden got personal in evoking his son, Beau, who served in Iraq before dying of brain cancer. The president criticized Trump for reportedly calling Americans killed in battle "suckers and losers." Biden told Trump, "My son was not a loser, was not a sucker. You're the sucker. You're the loser."

Though there is no evidence of any wrongdoing, Trump said, "Joe could be a convicted felon with all the things that he's done."Pressed to defend rising inflation since he took office, Biden pinned it on the situation he inherited from Trump amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Biden said that when Trump left office, "things were in chaos." Trump disagreed, declaring that during his term in the White House, "Everything was rocking good."By the time Trump left office, America was still grappling with the pandemic and during his final hours in office, the death toll eclipsed 400,000. The virus continued to ravage the country and the death toll hit 1 million over a year later.Trump repeatedly insisted that the three conservative justices he appointed to the Supreme Court helped overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision and returned the issue of abortion restrictions to individual states, which is what "everybody wanted." Biden countered that abortion access was settled for 50 years and that Trump was making it harder for women in large swaths of the country to get access to basic health care.At one point, Trump defended his record on foreign policy and blamed Biden for the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, suggesting the conflicts broke out when the aggressors felt free to attack because they perceived Biden as weak."This place, the whole world, is blowing up under him," Trump said."I never heard so much malarkey in my whole life," Biden retorted.Trump was asked what he would do to make childcare more affordable. He used his answer to instead boast about how many people he fired during his term, including former FBI Director James Comey and criticized Biden for not firing people from his administration.Trump has promised sweeping plans to remake the U.S. government if he returns to the White House and Biden argues that his opponent would pose an existential threat to the nation's democracy.Aiming to avoid a repeat of their chaotic 2020 matchups, Biden insisted - and Trump agreed - to hold the debate without an audience and to allow the network to mute the candidates' microphones when it is not their turn to speak. The debate's two commercial breaks offered another departure from modern practice, while the candidates have agreed not to consult staff or others while the cameras are off.Both men abided by the rules and didn't speak out of turn. Near the end, Biden also appeared to question Trump's weight - leading Trump to respond while his mic was muted, making his answer partly inaudible - and the two squabbled about their golf handicaps."Let's not act like children," Trump replied.Trump walked straight off the stage alone, after the debate. Biden was joined by his wife Jill, who watched from a green room. They hugged and kissed and she held his hand and seemed to assist him down the stairs as they approached Bash and Tapper to greet the moderators before leaving.Heading out of the debate, both Biden and Trump will travel to states they hope to swing their way this fall. Bear spotted cooling off in Duarte home's backyard hot tub

(KABC) -- A bear was caught on video thoroughly enjoying itself escaping the summer heat in a Duarte home's backyard hot tub.The homeowner said it spent about 15 minutes in the water. She added that bears often visit the foothills looking for something to eat, but this one wanted to take a dip instead.Bears are typically out of hibernation in the spring and summer, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).The CDFW urges residents who encounter bears in their backyards to slowly back away and bang pots and pans together, or make loud noises, once safe.The CDFW also recommends allowing the bear plenty of room to leave.If the bear enters the home, residents should call 911 when safe.Copyright © 2024 KABC Television, LLC. Menifee father of 4 in coma after hit-and-run on 710 Freeway in Long Beach

(KABC) -- A Menifee man - a husband and father of four - remains hospitalized in a coma nearly three weeks after he was injured in a hit-and-run crash on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach.Joseph Ludovico was on his motorcycle on his way to work at SpaceX in Long Beach when he was struck the morning of June 10.His wife said he bought the motorcycle a month ago to shorten his commute time."He was in surgery for six hours and... he looked horrific," his wife said as she fought back tears. "Something that I would never want somebody to see. He was completely distorted."The suspect vehicle was described by the California Highway Patrol as possibly a newer model white Toyota Corolla with damage on the right side. No arrest has been made.Doctors said Ludovico should come out of the coma eventually, but the extent of his brain injuries are unknown.Ludovico is the sole provider for his family. Joe Biden-Donald Trump presidential debate: 5 key takeaways

President Joe Biden delivered a halting performance in Thursday's debate with former President Donald Trump -- raising new questions about his future in an event largely viewed as a test of the two candidates' fitness for office.The two debated a slate of policies on stage in Atlanta, though little new ground was broken. Much of the focus was instead on how the 81-year-old president and his 78-year-old predecessor would handle another four years in the Oval Office -- with Democrats left worrying about Biden's performance.Here are five takeaways from Thursday night's clash.

Biden has slow start

Biden came on stage with a raspy voice and repeatedly stumbled through some of his answers early on.When asked a question on the national debt, he said there are "thousands of trillionaires" before correcting himself, for instance.

Making sure that we're able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I've been able to do with the -- with the COVID, excuse me -- dealing with everything we have to do with, look ... we finally beat Medicare," Biden said, appearing to lose his train of thought at the end of his answer.The moment precisely highlighted a major theme heading into the debate -- Biden's mental acuity and fitness for office -- and sent Republicans celebrating."Game over!!!" Bryan Lanza, a former Trump campaign aide who remains in touch with the former president's current team, texted ABC News.Democrats, too, sounded a negative note.In a historic clash of personality and policy, Joe Biden and Donald Trump took the stage for the first presidential debate of the 2024 election."A few words the Biden team should look up: espresso; and honey and lemon for the throat," said one high-level Democratic strategist.Biden appeared to pick up steam as the debate dragged on, dubbing Trump a "convicted felon" and mixing it up over their records, but the president's performance was less energetic than that of his opponent.

Biden team spins his performance

Biden's team quickly worked to spin is performance, seemingly recognizing that he likely did not present himself a Democrats had hoped.The campaign said the president had a cold, but tested negative for COVID-19, though it's unclear why that news wasn't announced beforehand. The campaign told ABC News' Mary Bruce that they're feeling fine but conceded he had a slow start."Tonight, President Biden presented a positive and winning vision for the future of America -- one in which every American has a fair shot at the American dream, where every one of our rights are protected, and where our president fights to strengthen our democracy -- not to tear it down," said Biden campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon.Biden's allies echoed past support for the president, allowing that the night likely did not go as planned but that the president will remain the nominee."I don't care, I'm going to stick with Joe Biden," former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile said on ABC News Live.

Trump (mostly) keeps his cool

Operatives were eyeing which version of Trump would appear on stage Thursday: the brawler who repeatedly interrupted Biden at their first 2020 debate? Or would he be a staid presence that would be interpreted as more presidential?Largely, the latter ended up as a more apt description of Trump's performance.To be certain, Trump veered into some of his more bombastic rhetoric -- exaggerating the state of the economy under his term and the number of border crossings and crimes taking place under Biden; saying Biden "could be a convicted felon"; and accusing the president of "going after his political opponent because he can't win fair and square."President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off in Thursday's presidential debate, raising Democrats concern over Biden's chances in the 2024 election.But he did not center his arguments around unfounded claims of election fraud or repeated attacks on Hunter Biden, the president's only surviving son who was recently convicted on felony gun charges. Oftentimes, he returned his answers to favorable topics for him like inflation and immigration, including on a question regarding the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill."Let me tell you about Jan. 6. On Jan. 6, we had a great border. Nobody coming through. Very few on Jan. 6. We were energy independent on Jan. 6, we had the lowest taxes ever. We had the lowest regulations ever," he said.Trump's campaign swiftly declared victory."Tonight President Trump delivered the greatest debate performance and victory in history to the largest voter audience in history, making clear exactly how he will improve the lives of every American," top Trump campaign hands Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a statement."Joe Biden on the other hand showed exactly why he deserves to be fired," they said. "Despite taking a week-long vacation at Camp David to prepare for the debate, Biden was unable to defend his disastrous record on the economy and the border."

New rules impose cleaner debate, but less pushback

Thursday's debate had novel rules that were largely successful in imposing a cleaner debate than in the past.No audience was in the studio to interrupt with applause or boos, and microphones were cut off when candidates were not recognized to speak.The result was a debate with little crosstalk or disruptions, a stark departure from primary debates earlier this year and debates during 2020, when crosstalk made the candidates' comments essentially illegible.However, while the more rigid format helped move the conversation along, there was minimal pushback from moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, who at times opted to move forward rather than correct falsehoods or push for a direct answer to their initial question if a candidate had already used up their time for a response.And the conversation still veered into the outlandish at times, with both candidates sparring for a few minutes toward the end over their golfing abilities."Let's not act like children," Trump said.

Lots of policy talk, but little new ground

The structure also helped the moderators and candidates stick to policy, but little new ground was broken on the contenders' stances on main issues.Biden vowed to reinstate Roe v.
