I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel all alone.

We can just send you what you feel and you'll write about it?
Yep! I might not always be able to write about everything, but I like trying. Or sometimes I'll just pick one part of something that someone says that I really can relate with.

The biggest mistake you can make is thinking that romantic love is the only type that hurts. Because a friend’s judgmental looks can feel like a stab in the gut, a parent’s disapproval can make you feel worthless, and a sibling’s backhanded complement can feel like a slap in the face. No matter what kind of love it is, you open yourself up to that person. And as with any kind of love, it is those people that can hurt you the most. Loving people is exhausting. And losing friends you once loved can hurt more than anything else in the world.

I looked up at him and considered trying to explain how every morning when I wake up, it feels like someone is sitting on my chest, but that someone is the world and knowing what’s out there makes it hard to breathe. And I thought about saying how at night sometimes it can take me hours to go to sleep for the same reason. Like being alive is so hard to bear that often it makes me feel too sick to do anything else. But all I chose to say was: “I will be okay.” And I said it because I hope it’s true. Because I know how good life can be, and I will just keep walking around with the feeling of the world’s weight on my ribcage until one day I wake up and can breathe. And I will wait while the weight gets lighter and lighter because I know that life is worth all this pain. Because I have felt unconditional love and the feeling of the sun on my skin on a windy day, and I have seen my sister’s face after saving a game winning goal in her soccer game. So I won’t let my loved ones down, and I will try to appreciate the sun, and I will try to be there every time my sister does something to be proud of. Because these people and these things that make up life, they’re worth it.

When the girl with the bright lipstick beckons from across the room, do not forget the girl who is sitting at home in her pyjamas, waiting for you. And as you breathe in the new perfume, all lavender and rose, remember how the first time she walked by, the air was filled with cinnamon, and she laughed when you said she reminded you of Christmas. When you’ve had one too many and stagger to your car with a girl who’s eyes you’ll soon forget, try not to murmur the wrong name into her hair. The rise and fall of her ribcage is alien to you and her hands don’t run through your hair the way you like it, but you’re too tired to say anything and she doesn’t care. And when it’s almost light and you’re watching the sky because your eyelids will never be as heavy as the thud in your chest, try to keep your trembling hands from dialling her number. You don’t remember red lips or kohl eyes anymore. But her laughter plays in your mind and for some reason you miss the feeling of her heartbeat. People take heartbeats for granted, you think, and you never realise how important they are until they’re too far away to save.

The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.

I’m 36 and I am at a really good place in my life right now. And when I was your age, in college, I wasn’t. So don’t you let anyone tell you that college or your 20’s should automatically be the best part of your life, or that growing up and being an adult means everything goes downhill. That’s bullshit. I am so happy right now as a middle-aged person. That’s totally a thing. So don’t worry about growing up.
My chemistry professor today, just out of the blue. I thought it was really apropos for all college-aged individuals. (via pineapplemountain)
