One candle today is blown in honor of the tiny miracle who made its way to earth years ago on the 29th of April. How I wish that you were held tightly, wrapped in warmest hugs and welcomed with the love you should have gotten. I just know that your wails were the loudest when you were born because that’s just who you are, and that where there is noise, there is you.

One candle today is blown in remembrance of that boy who must have run on the sand beside the vast ocean. One who made sand castles and collected rocks. One who viewed the world as a playground and everyone was a friend. I just know that the ones around you orbited in your rays when you were just a kid because that’s just who you are, and that where there is warmth, there is you.

One candle today is blown in recollection of the kid with pillow fights, in pencil wars and scraped knees. The kid with the battle scars made only by run-ins with a wall or a misstep or maybe one darkened stabbed wound under the wrist. I just know that those scars, tiny emblems of who you are, are the happiest ones you got and that where there is playful banter and childlike games, there is you.

One candle is blown today in reminiscence of that one very young lad whose life was unfairly taken from him. One who should never had been through what those monsters did to him. One who we should have protected. I just wish that we could go back in time and save you from all those nightmares, and that where there is safety, there should have been you.

One candle is blown today in tribute to the most selfless man I know, one we would never deserve. The man who tirelessly proved his loyalty to his found family, to his friends, to the city he vowed to protect. The man who is noble enough to sacrifice every inch of his being just because that is what the world needs. The man who’s heart is so full of love and beats for his loved ones. Yes, dear, you have a heart and you deserve one. I just wish you understand how you are the definition of humanity for us especially that bandaged bastard and that where there is a trail of loud, chaotic heartbeats, there is you.

Our lovely, beautiful Chuuya, your birth is worth celebrating because you deserve to be here. And every year we’ll blow candles for you to remind you of that.

I was outlining a new fic idea over FaceTime with my best friend and the ao3 tag she comes up with to describe it was “iwaoi gain self actualization through helping kagehina” and god, what a line!! this is deeply incoherent but the complexities and nuance contained in kagehina and iwaoi as parallels and foils (as individual characters and relationships) really are the driving force of my brain rot.

we have the setter spiker connection, of course, and the two seijoh karasuno matches really drive it home. Oikawa and Tobio comment on the similarities themselves (when backed into a corner they’ll always set to their partner!! that’s why they can read each other so well! also iwaoi’s reaction to “as long as I’m here, you’re invincible is peak, ok) and then later we have the time skip with Oikawa and Hinata both going abroad to Argentina and Brazil to further develop their skills. we have Oikawa and Hinata being drawn together through their hunger for volleyball, the struggles of being alone in a foreign country, and their connection to Tobio as forces that challenge and better him (they are his two biggest influences after all!!). they forge their own independent relationship on that beach and it’s equal parts and hilarious.

Iwa’s role in this is so fascinating as well because there’s so much there that’s hinted at. I could write volumes on iwaoi but I love love love the little glimpses we see about his relationship with Tobio—aka I make fanon mountains out of canon molehills. He’s a good senpai!!! We all know about That Scene™️ and how he defends Tobio; Tobio, hilariously, seems to only remember Iwa’s declaration of “the best team of six wins” and not much before that. Tobio respects him so much and thinks he’s cool! Iwa shakes his hand, ever gracious in defeat when they play for the second time. They lovingly insult and throw their best friends across the room in the same way (am I saying that Iwaoi greatly informed how Tobio views volleyball and relationships? Yes. Come on now, they must have spent a lot of time in the kitagawa gym together before and after practice. He chases after them and there’s that one panel of iwaoi graduating from kitagawa that I’m pretty sure is included in tobio’s flashbacks/backstory in the blackadler match). Who else can relate to Tobio’s mixed feelings about Brazil arc but Iwa? There’s also the fun bonus of Iwa being solely in Tobio’s corner at this point; tobio and shoyou share most of the same friends which could lead to a potential conflict of interest (God help yacchan, tadashi, tsukki, and suga when these morons argue) but tobio can reliably confide in Iwa without it getting back to Shoyou. the possibilities of iwakage friendship/mentorship are endless and I’m here to scream about it, whether it on the Japan national team, middle school, or during the time skip. I also think the dynamic between Iwa, Tobio, and Oikawa is so interesting (jealousy, affection, respect, resentment, oh my) and when you throw Hinata in the mix it’s even more fun.

I have some more vague thoughts on Hinata and Iwa as parallels that go into more angsty territory, particularly about self-worth and how the seijoh karasuno matches mirror each other in the last point. my boys are sad!! they couldn’t make the last point count!! their volleyball careers are different yet similar as they take unconventional paths to fulfill this promises to their respective setter soulmate. in a way, we have kagehina achieving what iwaoi was unable to, which is part of the reason I think kagehina getting together first is an excellent catalyst for iwaoi self reflection time. we have kagehina getting to nationals together and standing on the world stage side by side at the Olympics. Iwaoi are on opposite ends of the court, separated but still connected nonetheless.

I’ll probably add more to this as I write more of my fic/reread the manga and rewatch the anime, but TLDR; kagehina and iwaoi are my favorite relationships in haikyuu and they’re constantly rattling around in my noggin in the worst game of pinball ever.

It has been years and I bet you're still holding the pillars of your clan. I know you're still the same yet a lot stronger now, a lot wiser now. I am sure that you've handled your grief well, by now. You always did.

But, Izumo, my dear, lovely Izumo, I hope today, you'll spend time for yourself. You'll allow others to pour on your cup. You'll let others stand behind the bar, take a little off your back.

You have been so selfless and kind and mature. And all these years, you've grown to give a lot more, sometimes, losing yourself in the process.

Your flame is forever warm, something your clan will gather around and feel comfortable in. You will always be home for Mikoto and Tatara and every clan member you have.

I dont think Iwaoi was "love at first sight" per se, but I do think Iwaizumi met Oikawa, and within a few days realized he would, eventually, fall in love with him.

I think when they reached middle school, Iwaizumi sat down beside Oikawa in their class on the first day and looked at him, and really looked, and thought: yeah. He's gonna get me one day.

And when Oikawa has his first middle school girlfriend, Iwaizumi isn't jealous at all. No crush, no secret love, he couldnt care less. But he thinks: shit. If I fall in love with him now, it's going to hurt.

But he doesnt. And they continue to grow up together. And people tease him, ask him if he thinks any girls are cute or if he's ever going to get a girlfriend and he plays it off as gross and says no because actually, im going to fall in love with Oikawa, sounds a little weird.

And the longer it takes the more confused Iwaizumi gets. Like he knows, one day, he's going to feel it. He knows it'll happen as sure as he knows which direction the sun rises, but he's also happy just being his best friend.

And then one day, finally, one day, at the beginning of their third year, Oikawa laughs and leans in a little too close as he's teasing him, and Iwaizumi's heart does a heavy thump in his chest and he just goes.

Ah. There it is. I was waiting for you.

And so there, in that exact moment, when his heart had finally caught up with what his soul had known on the spot, he asks if Oikawa has any plans that evening, and asks him out.

And Oikawa has the audacity to be surprised.

pre-relationship bullshit haikyuu teams probably had to put up with before various ships managed to get their shit together

daisuga probably was really annoying with like small/petty jealousy, like a girl would hit on one of them and the other would be standing behind their back making faces about it and mocking it and everyone else on the team just has to put up with it. and then theyre all overly sweet to each other to make up for the petty jealousy or some odd version of "winning them back" after the flirting event and the team is rolling their eyes *so hard*

i think asanoya is so annoying bc nobody can convince Asahi that Noya likes him. Like full stop. Eventually someone pulls him aside and is point blank like "Noya said he has a crush on you ask him out" and Asahi is just like: "Haha he was probably joking" and just leaves the scene. Like the absolute refusal to believe it from Asahi combined with Noya's classic teen boy inability to be sincere means that even after theyve both been told they somehow still havent gotten together??? how long is this going to take???

tsukkiyama probably ruins everyone's week the week before they get together bc one of them *saw* a confession letter stuck into the other's bag and absolutely went (emotionally) off the rails for the days leading up to them discovering it was for them.

I am fully of the camp that iwaoi start dating before they label it/make it official so the whole team is screaming like "PLEASE HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT IT" meanwhile Oikawa is saying "we just went on a few dates and kissed a few times it doesnt mean anything" and Iwa is in the background shouting "yeah I dont wanna be anyone's boyfriend that's lame" and then they wander off to go eat dinner together holding hands and the team is left in frustration because ALL they talk about is how theyre *not* in a relationship.

for bokuaka its mostly just Bokuto pestering every goddamn person he knows for like 4 months asking "do you think Akaashi likes me?" or "do you think he'd say yes if I asked him out?" and then one day making Konoha *snap* when he says "I need to tell you a secret" and the secret is that he has a crush on Akaashi as if nobody had known that

with ushiten I imagine Tendou was probably really obvious with his crush/interest but in like a very casual "not taking myself too seriously" kind of way so he's comfortable openly flirting, and Ushijima, against everyone's expectations, doesnt seem to mind the attention but is still who he is, so the whole team just has to put up with the most INSANE interactions. Like Tendou walks into the locker room and cat calls him and Ushijima just replies with a formal "thank you" and Semi is contemplating slamming his head in a locker. There's like 12 months of this.

okay okay but I think arankita is *very classic* in that Aran compensates for his crush by over-supporting Kita. so like the whole team gets super annoyed bc Aran wont risk disagreeing with him, is always offering to do extra work, is generally just sucking-up really badly and the twins suffer the most for this bc Aran used to just ignore their antics but now he's super annoyingly on them all the time to try and impress Kita

kuroken is a little different. Yaku asks Kuroo every single day if he's asked Kenma out yet. Lev asks Kenma if he has a crush on Kuroo every chance he gets. Fukunaga gives them a wink when they leave practice to walk home together. This is the only pairing in which the team is the irritant pre-relationship and then post-relationship everyone loses interest and moves on.

I'd include kagehina but once again the entire goddamn show is everyone putting up with them flirting so whats the point.

Jin-woo is handsome as always. Just look at him, getting married to the girl he had always loved since the past timeline and the person whom he promised to see again. I bet he reminisced these moments like he did on their first date, heck he must've teared up too! Because in this timeline, nothing was going to tear him apart from Hae-in and he could finally get to do the things he had been longing to do with her. Eat breakfast together without someone calling him due to an inevitable threat? Yes. Tease her all he wants just to see her adorable flustered face? Yes. Jogging together and betting on a race? Yes.

He was finally happy and content. There was no one else he imagined sharing the rest of his life with, but her.

Ah, what a wholesome moment!

Beru wants to watch historical kdramas in peace, but always ends up having a gremlin on his head and latching on his antennae.

You know the friendship is real when your first instinct against danger is to protect the group's little puppy.

This is one of the scenes that I adore SO much. You can tell that both Suou and Sakura made the decision to shield Nirei subconsciously. This is so important because usually Sakura would charge into the battlefield and leave Nirei in the care of Suou since he was aware that Suou could do that with ease.

The look of surprise on their faces when they saw the other doing the same thing is so priceless. I think at that moment they really realised how much they had grown on each other.
