Renji and Rukia's separation

People still don’t have clear why Renji and Rukia didn’t talk to each other during more than 40 years. It has never been given a clear reason for their separation and only some hints about it, so people can just speculate. Even in the databooks there isn’t any concrete thing about it. The only thing said is this, in SOULs databook:

“Released hand

The Kuchiki family offers to adopt Rukia. Renji congratules her, but their hearts are drawn apart…”

And that “their hearts are drawn apart…” is very open to interpretation. In my opinion, is pointing to a problem in their feelings and emotions. And the emphasis in that “released hand” is very significant, it alludes to the moment when Rukia removed Renji’s hand from her shoulder.

There is too the interview in VIBEs databook between Tite Kubo and Masakazu Morita:

Kubo- That episode was really amazing! (commenting anime episode 32) Renji and Rukia, those 2 acting performance gave me the chills, and the last “yeah” by Morita-san was also exciting. In that episode, there was a scene where Rukia, played by Orikasa-san, made a shudder run through me for the first time. When Renji put his hands on Rukia’s shoulders, Rukia said, “…I see… Thanks.” and removed his hand. I was thrilled and surprised at the way she said “I see”. It made me think, “Wow! So this is what was going on!”

Morita- Rukia’s words “I see” are the starting point that characterizes how the relationship between Renji and Rukia develops after this. Hence, if not enough emotion is put into those words, the story that follows would seem rather shallow.

Kubo alludes again to the impact of Rukia removing Renji’s hand, and the sentence “I see…” in that scene. In my interpretation, that “I see…” and Rukia removing Renji’s hand is the moment where Rukia understands that Renji is not going to fight for her and he is going to let her go. And her answer to the understanding of that fact is cold towards Renji and affected their relationship since then until the SS arc.

Many people think that they couldn’t talk to each other because of their different social classes, but when you try to analyse the manga, in my opinion, looks different.

Some people think that it was Renji who didn’t want to talk to her, that it was him who became estranged from her, but we know that Rukia didn’t try to have contact with Renji in all those years either, so she made the same, so who is “guilty” in this situation? I think both are.

I’ll try to analyze their separation (of course it’s my intepretation) with the hints that there are in the manga (it’s very long so I put it under the cut):

It's not like he finds Orihime particularly difficult to approach. She's such a bright and warm person, Uryū wouldn't trust someone that was apprehensive about her. He's just not good at keeping a straight face about her, and the awareness of it makes him nervous. Their sewing club has just finished for the day, and it's just the two of them still lingering. That does little to aid Uryū though, as it takes most of his self control not to visibly fluster before her.

"Inoue-San, before you leave I, uhm, have something for you." He's too nervous to meet her gaze directly, but a fabric bag is almost eagerly offered to her. Inside is countless different types of fabric, as well as lace, ribbons, and some fancy buttons. "I was clearing out my supplies and, since I won't be needing these, I-I thought you might have a use for these..."

uryu  was  probably  the  friend  she  got  the  least  amount  of  time  with  alone,  and  she  valued  having  quality  time  with  her  friends.  sure,  it’s  still class  and  it’s  not  truly  time  spent  alone  in  each  other’s  company,  but  it’s  a  place  for  the  both  of  them  to  bond  over  a  mutual  interest,  and  that’s been  enough  for  her  to see  what  kind  of  person  he  is.  especially now  as  he  outstretches  his  hand  to  offer  her  the  fabric  bag,  she  thinks  how  considerate  he  is  and  thoughtful  to  have  remembered  her.   she  supposes  it’s  in  only  natural,  but  it  does  bring  a  rosy  blush  to  her  cheeks  as  she  accepts  it.  

“  ah,  ishida-kun !  thank  you  so  much !  ”  cheery  smile  sweeps  across  her  lips  as  she  looks  through  the  materials  he  gathered.  all  the  buttons  were  especially adorable !  maybe  she’d  make  kon  an  outfit  too,  or  add  little  embellishments  to  her  clothes  at  home.   “   say,  there’s  a  new  fabric  store  opening  near  your  house.  did  you  see  it  ?   we  should  go  together !  ”

He doesn't know how she does it. Shunsui has spent ages serving as a captain, and he still can't will himself to push past his fatigue at the end of the day. But Nanao remains diligently perched at her desk, powering through whatever paperwork that remains. Her work ethic was admirable, and he's impressed by her ability to stay on task, but it'd be a lie if Shunsui said he didn't find this a little worrisome. He knows better than to insist she take a break, but that doesn't deter him from placing a hot cup of tea and some fresh cut fruit just to the side of her workload.

"Y'know, somedays watching you can be enough to exhaust me." His tone is soft and playful, and a hand gently rests on the back of her head. "You haven't moved in a while, Nanao-Chan. Take a minute to yourself, please. The paperwork won't go anywhere."

she  barely  registers  the  ache  in  her  back  until  her  captain  remarks  on  her  unmoving  position.  his  gentle  touch  at  the  back  of  her  head  startles  her  somewhat,  but  she recovers  quickly,  sighing  as  she  adds  another  finished  document  to  the  pile.  

“  many  of  these  are  important  documents  that  must  be  sent  out  within  the  week.   half  of  which  i  need  your  signature  on,  so  don’t  think  you’ve  gotten  away  completely  from  doing  your  share  of  the  load,  captain.  ”  despite  firm  words,  nanao  sets  down  her  brush  and  settles  back  against  her  seat,   giving  her  back  a  much  needed  rest.  

plucking  a  piece  of  fruit  from  the  dish  he’s  so  considerately  offered,  she  gives  a  soft  hum of  satisfaction  at  its  sweetness.    “   have  some  with  me,  won’t  you ?  ”

“   ah,   rukia-chan  !   i  have  so  much  news  for  you.  i  started  a  new  job  at  a  bakery,  and  it’s  lots of  fun.  if  there’s  any  leftover  bread,  i  can  bring  it  home  or  share  it  with  sado-kun,  ishida-kun,  and  kurosaki-kun!  look,  i  even  brought  some  for  you  too.  ”  she  slides  the  neatly  wrapped  varieties  of  bread  across  the  small table  to  her.  

there’s  so  much  more  she  wants  to  tell  the  other  woman,  but  she  doesn’t  want  to  be  overwhelm  her.  inoue  knows  she  can get  carried  away.  “  what  do  you  wanna  know ?   who  do  you  want  to  start  with ?  should  i  tell  you  what   kurosaki-kun’s  been  up  to ?  ”   rapid  fire  questions  continue  to  ramble  from  her  lips,  even  as  she  stuffs  a  piece  of  chocolate  croissant  in  her  mouth,  flaky,  buttery  layers  sticking  to  her  lips.
