This just means gojo was only genuinely happy in his past specifically this time with his close ones. And the rest years that he lived were him just pretending to be cheerful and happy when deep down he was just lonely and heart broken. He got a chance and went back to be the person he was in his past. To find that happiness and love again.

While sukuna who never felt what love is like or never experienced happiness chose to walk a different path and become a new person, where he'll start all over again just to feel and experience those things.

The loneliness that came with power for both of them was indeed unbearable and they chose their paths accordingly, just to be happy and get rid of their loneliness.
