Kadaknath Chicken Farming In Nepal — An Overview
Poultry farming is one of the popular agri-business in Nepal with various species of chickens. Among them, the Kadaknath chicken (aka Kali Mashi or the black chicken) is one of the rarest breeds with high nutritional value.
Today, Kadaknath chicken farming is quite popular in Nepal thanks to its medicinal value. Back in the day, most indigenous chicken breeds were neglected due to their poor production ability. However, there are still loads to cover in this market, as numerous people need to know their existence and values.
All the Kadaknath chicken farmers in Nepal do not produce their chickens but import them from India. But you will be able to find quite a few farmers who grow them in Nepal.
All About Kedaknath Chicken
The black chicken has three major breeds, Ayam Cemani, Silkie, and Kadaknath. Among them, Kadaknath is the most popular breed and originates from India. The Ayam Cemani is an Indonesian breed, while the Silkie is a Chinese breed.
The Kadaknath is the native of the Dhar and Jhabua districts in the western region of Madhya Pradesh. This Indian breed is jet black with a turquoise glow from melanin deposition.
They are known for their black meat and deliciousness infused with high nutritional value. Often a Kadaknath female chicken weighs about 1.2 to 1.5 kg, while the male can be up to 2 kg.
Apart from regular chickens, these breeds are black with a black comb, legs, tongue, and even eggs. However, they have weaker egg-laying ability than the usual chicken, with 100 eggs per year.
They also have low fertility, as only 70 percent of eggs are successfully hatched during summer. As for winter, their fertility rate drops to around 50 to 60 percent.
While we are it, Kadaknath chickens are hardy and highly resistant to disease. Well, if you are planning to raise some of them, the good news is they can adapt to different types of environments. Also, unlike broiler chickens, Kadaknath chickens can solely survive even on kitchen waste.
Furthermore, being one of the rarest birds, Kadaknath chicken goes for a high price in the market. So, they fetch high business if you make the right marketing channel.
Nutritional Value Of Kadaknath Chicken
Kadaknath chickens are pretty famous for the medicinal and nutritional benefits they hold. At the same time, they are renowned for their meat quality, taste, and texture. As per the sources, their eggs are rich in protein and iron, with aphrodisiac properties.

What are the parts of a chicken egg and their functions?
There are four main parts to a chicken egg: the shell, the albumen, the vitelline membrane, and the chalaza. Each part has a specific function that helps to keep the egg safe and nutrient-rich.

The shell is composed of calcium carbonate and protects the egg from physical damage. It also regulates gas exchange between the egg and its surroundings.
The albumen, or egg white, contains proteins that provide structure and support for the developing embryo.
The vitelline membrane surrounds the yolk and contains nutrients that will be used by the embryo during development.
Finally, the chalaza is a spiral of protein fibers that attach the yolk to the shell and help to keep it in place.
Together, these four parts work to keep the egg safe and nutritious for the developing embryo.

Introduction to Brooding in Poultry
My experience in working in poultry farms has taught me that brooding in poultry is one of the most crucial and sensitive aspects of a chicken’s life. This article will help you learn the basics of brooding and answer all of your queries.

What is Brooding?
Brooding in poultry relates to the procedure of giving heat, nutrition, hydration, and all essential medical assistance to birds ranging in age from a day to around 2 – 4 weeks.
The heat to the developing chicks must be supplied using an external heat source until they develop their metabolic thermoregulatory mechanism.
What are the forms of Brooding in Poultry?
Natural Brooding
The female chicken uses the natural brooding method. A chicken can brood 10-15 chicks based on its size. In natural brooding, a hen continues to rest on its eggs for them to hatch.
After hatching the eggs, the mother hen supplies all necessities for her chicks’ survival, including heat, food, and water.
Artificial Brooding
The poultry uses a thermal brooder to replicate the natural brooding mechanism in the artificial brooding process.
As a result, artificial brooding entails supplying freshly hatched chicks with heat, water, nourishment, and any necessary veterinary care until they can regulate their body temperature.
Which method of Brooding in Poultry is more Beneficial?
Brooding in poultry is generally done artificially due to economic advantages. Some of the benefits are:
The producer can brood many developing chickens at once using artificial brooding.
Chickens can be grown in all seasons.
Artificial brooding permits the chicks to perform at their best and increases their chances of survival.
Chicks obtain all the essential nutrition they require through proper feeding procedures.
It enables careful monitoring of chicks.
Equipment Required for Successful Brooding
Since brooding in poultry is a crucial management strategy, it is critical to understand the essential brooding equipment.
Some key items that must be accessible in the brooder for brooding to be effective are:
