you know, not a huge fan of that meme, but some of you never had to discuss anything with anyone not in your native language and from a different country with different issues and, god, does it show.

y’all here dissecting obsessively the use of specific words and which LGBTA+ groups can say what and in all of this you actively and constantly forget:

not everyone’s first language is your goddamn English ;

different countries = different struggles of the LGBTA+ community and some of us can’t afford to lose sleep over another person using a term we don’t like because the government is busy trying to deny us basic rights ;

even inside different anglophone countries is by now clear to everyone that there are different terms issues and use and y’all asking kids from rural and isolated backgrounds to have the language approved by the newest wokest new york lingo.

it’s counterproductive, it’s cannibalistic, it’s ridiculous.

“x people can’t say butch/femme/top/bottom/bear/twink/gay/doe/stag/whatever” … honey, do you really think people from other countries know (and care about) the full extent of the English urban dictionary LGBTA+ edition? 

I heard lesbians and bi women for years use seme and uke unironically as definitions, I heard people use “truck-driver” to say butch their whole lives, I heard of bi people who had to use slurs and insults to define themselves not out of reclaiming but because bi people are often deprived of self-defining terminology by monosexism. 

This shit is complicated and y’all there writing thousand and thousand on words on using queer or not, while not even stopping a moment considering that saying “the straights” and “the heteros” for your jokes throw under the bus all heterosexual trans people and all trans people who want to label as straight (also because a bunch of languages don’t even have the difference between hetero and straights, they just have slurs against LGBTA+ people that go as “tilted” or “inverted”).

You break our language in a thousand crumbs to overanalyze them and then lose the sight of the big picture.

Y’all there nitpicking words and uses and what not, as if we all come from the same upper-middle-class quartier of the east coast.

There is people out there who still don’t realize being bi is an option and they are not a self-hating gay or a lust-driven heterosexual and y’all want me to care if a 16 years old from Spain used femme the wrong way? Please.

now that ao3 as a whole is a hugo nominee and has reminded us all that it is an incredibly well-designed, excellently maintained project with an archival system that is the envy of many librarians etc, it is a great time to remember that:

ao3 is run entirely by volunteers 

there are no ads or monetization at all to bother site users

and also the site works on strict guidelines to prevent us from being sued to bankruptcy etc

we use this amazing site for FREE

server space is EXPENSIVE and ao3 needs A LOT OF IT

needing native representation in media, education and government are not decoy issues, the commercialization and appropriation of native cultures are not decoy issues, the lack of native representation is institutional oppression at work
