on culture and communication
✎  ─  Kaira Angeles and Frances Zipagan’s third blog entry ˊˎ-
Tumblr media
Hello!
In today’s topic of culture, We wanted to tackle on a very serious concept that we feel is not talked about enough by the public.
Tumblr media
What is cultural appropriation?
the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society by Oxford Languages
Why is it bad?
[Cracks knuckles] Four keywords: oppression, exploitation, denigration and of course, appropriation.
It continues the long-term oppression of the non-dominant culture. While the people of this particular culture were mocked or discriminated from showcasing their works and traditions, the dominant culture which is also responsible for the mockery and discrimination, has the audacity to steal elements from the “non-dominant” culture to steaks it for their personal gain or interest. It puts the non-dominant culture in a disadvantage, having a piece from the culture stolen, it is considered as economic oppression as well, according to Reach Out Australia which is a very informative website on social injustices and issues around the world.
Next, exploitation. It’s very well-known that there are numerous brands that incorporate cultural elements to their designs or products but the difference is, they steal these fragments of a particular culture without a care for the historical context. The worst case scenario is they use it to represent a damaging stereotype as a “design” – perhaps for satire purposes – which is discriminating and adding to the factors of oppressing the targeted culture.
Denigration, as defined by Cuncic (2020) in an article about cultural appropriation, is taking pieces of a culture for the purpose of mocking it or stepping on it. Basically, cultural denigration’s only purpose is to put down the non-dominant culture even more by attacking it.
Finally, appropriation. This term covers the concept of taking or stealing from a non-dominant culture that has a history of being oppressed and is considered as a minority group even and using that stolen cultural element without understanding the history or concept behind it and showing no respect for the culture.
Tumblr media
What are things that can be appropriated from cultures?
There are a lot of elements from a particular culture that can be easily taken. Reading articles about cultural appropriation helped us find a coherent list of objects that are commonly targeted for appropriation.
Clothing or clothing materials, cosmetic products and practices, hairstyles, dances, music, food, tattoos, decorations and even some art forms.
Extra Info!
If you would like to read more on how to identify if something is cultural appropriation so you would be able to avoid it, I would like to leave a link of this article from Verywell Mind.

on group/org comm and “the office”
✎  ─  Kaira Angeles and Frances Zipagan’s second blog entry ˊˎ
Tumblr media
We realized that our first blog is interconnected to the Blog #2, so we come up to make a comic strip instead for the second blog and create a scenario to apply the concepts discussed.
Pink is a newbie blob at the office. He is smart, achiever but no work experience so technically, it was his first job ever.
Blue is a regular officemate, a friendly one and has lots of experience in the office because he's working there for already 7 years He is also assigned to guide Pink for a week and make him familiar to the entire office.
Their discourse revolves around the tips given by Blue for Pink, while Pink connects them with the film he watched.

Transcript:
Humans are social beings by nature. This unique capability makes us distinctive from other creatures. Although we differ from each other, one thing that is common for everybody is that we can never not communicate and socialize.
“No man is an island.” This is a saying we can all agree on. Its simple interpretation would be that not a single person would survive without communicating with another human being in their lives. It’s a daily essential.
Growing up, there are some who are already exposed with people. They were often surrounded by their friends and family, laugh with them, share stories and chikas, burst out in tears then cry on their shoulders and experience the best that life can offer them.
It’s true that being able to surround ourselves with people of different backgrounds allows us to grow accustomed to dealing with various personalities. As we grow, we become more empathic, more understanding towards other cultures and eventually, we’d become more accepting and open.
Those experiences molded us to who we are right now, without even realizing it. The way we live our lives, how we treat our family, hang out with friends and the way we interact with other people outside our comfort zone tells us how great it is to be part of something we can call society.
Getting used to being in a socially active environment gains us so many benefits. With Kai’s experiences, she was able to speak out her opinions and perspectives every time she needed, because of the confidence that slowly grew in her  throughout time. Her speech communication skills also developed and was able to use it in performing in front of a crowd. Her voice, for a moment, became an instrument to inspire others in writing stories through poetry.
Ces, on the other hand, was brought down by fear and it kept her self-esteem to the lowest. It took her time to be able to find her own voice and those are thanks to her friends and family who made her feel that she was valid and being listened to. Granted, her speech communication skills aren’t that impressive but improving, and she rather write than speak for the time being. Hence, she is looking forward to the day she can confidently bring herself and say that she is proud of speaking up.
To grow and learn takes a lot of time. We differ from the things we get used to and we also cope up in so many different ways. Kai’s perspective is how she built herself through socializing, while Ces’ is how socializing slowly built and made her ready to conquer life.
Communication has given us relationships. We build them up, some crumble, some continue to reconstruct and some remain stagnant. It has given us people that play big roles in our lives and continue to inspire us.
But the moment the pandemic struck the world, being alone or being in isolation felt daunting as ever. It somehow changed the phase of our life. Most of the days, we spend our time alone, accomplishing our academic obligations, trying to survive and keep up with all the backlogs.
During pre-pandemic, most of us would eat or watch movies together after class and enjoy the rest of the time with our friends before it gets dark. Now, after class, all we wanted was to rest or take time to entertain ourselves and keep us away from our keyboards. Every birthday we get to celebrate before are now only full of greetings and messages through the use of different social media platforms.
The transition of being able to do anything we can do freely before, to being locked up in our rooms today is one of the challenges we faced for the past few months which affects our social being. We rarely talked with each other personally, almost everything is now done online and virtually.
Overall human beings show and share different personalities from each other. Some of us depend on the daily routine of spending time with people we know and some of us are happy to be alone with ourselves in the meantime. However, as we are rational, we have to look at the better side and treasure those we’ve experienced and overcome and that is how communication prepares and continuously prepares us in this world we all live in. You, me and the world together with communication, we all work as one to make our life worth living, interesting and exemplary.
