Film Response for Exercise #5
Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present is a documentary that shows the ruthlessness of performance art and the tenacity of one woman who tests the limits of her body for the purpose of art. Marina Abramovic uses her body and its strengths and weaknesses as performance art, showing what the body is capable of and what is possible in performance. Marina is known as the mother of performance art and challenges herself and her viewers to define performance art, something she found hard to do in her gallery exhibitions. Marina explores where the line is drawn between performance and between performance art, she is always performing and testing her relationship with herself and even with significant others. Marina's performances spark intrigue in her viewers and curiosity as she pushes herself or tests herself and others.

Reading Response #5
Performance art has been around before all other forms of art. If we consider the fact that performance art is anything that is live art, there is probably more performance than we think. Even in nature performance is apparent. The act of a lion teaching its young the art of hunting is a performance, and one that many people might like to see. Birds displaying bright colors to attract mates is very much performance art. Now, that might be stretching things a bit to some, but according to Goldberg, “Performance is the expression of artists who wish to challenge the viewers' perceptions of art and the limits of those perceptions.” So therefore, anything that can be performed or expressed can be art. As an artist, I could mimic the hunting lion and that would be performance art. By expressing ourselves live and in front of an audience of any shape and size (even if it’s just ourselves) we are performing and we are creating art. “Each performer makes his or her own definition of performance in the very manner and process of execution, so that each work becomes an entirely unexpected combination of events.” Performance art is exciting and brings life to the world through an artist’s expression.

I loved this. I really like that you incorporated some normal shots to bring us back down to earth! Very trippy, very in sync with the music. Great job!
Project #4 Vanishing and Becoming. Normalcy comes in and out of this video, establishing what was needed for this project. Really happy how this turned out.

At 0:36 is where I think this becomes the most successful I love how you place different videos side by side. Before that, my one suggestion is that the transitions could be a bit smoother. Otherwise, I think this was a success and I like your choice in video, concept, and music.

Project #4 - Art Video
"Ride or Die"
For this project I had difficulty keeping my video at one minute and not going over. The song I chose for this video is DJ Wonder’s “chopped and screwed” rendition of 2pac’s song, “Hail Mary”. 2pac is a prolific rapper from the 1990s and had a way about him that was relevant, notoriously street wise, and un-candid. The footage I incorporated in my piece includes Syrian war footage from this year, the printing of the new 100 dollar bill, and other video and audio abstractions.

I love your use of filters on the images to give it that artistic flare. On the other hand my attention wasn't held very well with the long periods of black in between frames. The sound helped, but maybe some layered images over the black would have helped to give it the message you were going for and hold attention easier.

Without even pressing play I knew I wanted to watch this because of the first frame. This is really strange but in a great way. Reminds me of Doctor Who, which is probably where some of the vocal samples came from, but it captures the mystery and confusion which makes this really successful.

I didn’t get the memo about the on line critique. Little bummed I don’t get to see some of these on the projector. Enjoy!

It is very simplistic, but it is also very appealing because of its simplicity. I think adding even more videos along with the ones you used, even if they were very subtle, would have made it very powerful.

This is very simplistic, my goal was to just get through this without too much pain.

I enjoy that you used your own video and art. I also like the stop-motion quality of the video. I think the frames where your hands can be seen moving the pieces gives it a very laid-back and comedic appeal. Nice work!

Project #4
Vanishing and Becoming
Before I even did the reading I knew I wanted to film the video myself and include some of my own artwork. So on that note the mermaid paintings are my own and all filming was done in my super high tech studio (otherwise known as my dining room). After doing the reading, Vanishing and Becoming, it really made me think about story telling and how important stories are to human beings. Particularly stories about life and death, or more specifically creation myths and the afterlife. So with that I am going to leave you with a quote from the article that stood out to me, and leave the work to, more or less, speak for itself.
“it is not God or the world that has vanished, but the dead who we sought so hard to replicate and so to keep alive. It is perhaps time for us to face up to our mortality.” (Cubitt 417)

A nice looking couple brought their computer in for repair.
Client: It just stopped working.
They added offhandedly that they been smelling a “plastic” smell, and had also recently replaced a missing slot cover.
I nodded, outlined my usual fees and told them to expect a call when I’m done.
