This is why I’m so grateful for the indie horror practical effects Renaissance were in right now! Not to mention bigZ award winning films like The Substance and Smile/Smile 2, there’s some genuinely incredible effects out there that film makers are pouring their heart and soul into again and I just adore it
gore is so cgi and manufactured nowadays. where is the prosthetic limbs that can be chopped off and squirt blood, where is the blood packs in actors mouth so they can spit the blood out, where is the explosion of blood that doesn’t look realistic because there can’t possibly be that much blood in someone’s body. we need to go back and take some notes out of 80s body horror book

The production value here is off the charts but this is also literally just what it feels like to play Uno.

“Why exactly does Peacock have all these British haunted doll movies?” I ask as I queue up a movie called Jack in the Box about, you guessed it, a haunted Jack in the Box

YES there are various times you can see her mic pack YES this movie isn’t as good as the first one BUT at least it made more sense than Cult AND tied into the lore better (kind of). The ending made me laugh out loud actually, in a way that left me feeling good about it. Yeah, just skip Cult and go straight from The Curse to The Madness of Humpty Dumpty for a weird, fun jaunt of a double feature. That ending was baffling, but hilarious.
What if I told you a movie called The Curse of Humpty Dumpty is a decently suspenseful, creepy movie with a touch of The Taking of Debora Logan—

An opening of clips from the far superior first movie with random stock sounds laid over them does not bode well. A hand-painted foam tombstone prop and every pentacle they could find at the local metaphysical shop, AND a shot where you could see the main character’s green mic pack sticking out of her black dress? Bruh

I never thought I’d be out here wanting to defend a horror movie about Humpty Dumpty, and the sequels ARE as bad as you’d expect, but genuinely?? The first movie is pretty damn good! It feels like a well-loved low budget film that invested its resources into its strong points - the writing, some good cinematography, and some genuinely great choices that really stood out to me, even as they were bookended by a scene with some of the worst CG dolls I’ve ever seen and breathing corpses. I think the main character Wendy was extremely well cast, she gave a fantastic, emotional performance.
This certainly isn’t the first time I’ve watched a really solid independent film and the sequels just suck, but it may be one of the most jarring lmao how do you go from a doll monster that’s of course still silly to look at, but actually manages to be sufficiently creepy with some well laid out lingering shots to uh, whatever the fuck that costume is in the second one. I’m still gonna watch the third because I know how to commit but uhhhh yeah I don’t recommend that.
The 26% on rotten tomatoes for The Curse is simultaneously fair and a travesty. There’s a good movie buried in there, I swear! Fucks sake, The Cult isn’t even ON Rotten Tomatoes. But the third on, The Madness of Humpty Dumpty, sure the fuck is, with genuinely no reviews at all. Which is worse? I guess I’m going to find out.
The fact each of these movies starts with a Coraline-esc doll making sequence is going to drive me insane. Will update after if there’s anything new to say. Will the Humpty mask get even worse this time around? Will they cast another very short person to play him instead of a full grown adult like the first one? So many questions to which I dread the answer.

The Monster 2016 was good! The actors that play the mother and daughter gave fantastic performances, it was very emotional, and there were some good practicals! I recommend it, free on Pluto

This is gonna be one of those with a kind of fun opener that would have been a good short film and then just spiral out of control because they were given more budget than they knew what to do with huh
