Addition: Both the psychiatric practices referred to me by the university appear somewhat questionable, have questionable brands, and want me to sign some dubious-sounding contracts, but because I've had no outside psychiatric treatment before and also have no options now, I can't tell if this is the norm or not.
Following my whinging about government websites and application processes, I would now like to complain about doctors' offices websites and application processes... Currently making an appointment for psychiatric assessment required by my university and the practice's website wants me to enter my credit card information without even telling me how much I'm paying...
#like this practice has a policy acknowledgment document to sign that is written with a condescending tone and dubious English#also doesn't accept state insurance plans (which is not what I have so doesn't apply to me but. is that usual??)#complaining instead of doing my work

#complaining instead of doing my work#yes I could email or call them first to ask but. they already have a website. why can't they just write basic information#also... I know it's doctor-patient confidentiality and all but I hate having to take live phone calls#especially because I have irregular working hours so I'm always being woken from sleep to take them

It's that time of year when I have to get official government documents again and I am not happy about it... Who knew that not having a permanent residence and for that reason losing a bag with your passport, visa, and birth certificate would create problems into the future??
#I mean. it's fine. I just have to follow all the procedures and all that#but last year I had a government agent be incredibly rude to me for no apparent reason (racism? xenophobia? just a bad day? who knows)#and now I have an irrational resentment both of the area that agency was in and of passport applications in general#also: government websites are so easily navigable and never have partially omitted or conflicting information or broken links!! /s#complaining instead of doing my work

#Les Misérables musical#ah I really like it when Javert actors smile/laugh at the 'how right you should kill with a knife' line#it seems right that Javert should be less afraid of death than he is pleased to see his rigid worldview proven right

les mis arena tour in Amsterdam!! (Notes)
Act 1 I'M WRITING DURING BREAK
The person playing bishop myriel (Hans Peter Janssens) is someone very dear to my mom, since he played Valjean in the very first les mis she ever saw! We didn't know he was on the cast list and my mom was so happy. He has such a beautiful low voice ughh
Javert is one of the best javert's i've seen because he looks so smug about himself, in the runaway cart scene, when he was talking about having found 'Valjean' he has small smirks from time to time. He is slightly unhinged idk how to explain it, the actor totally sells you on the idea of Javert: so good at his job and extremely proud of himself for it. His stars was amazing aswell. He is so self-rightous and you can really SEE that with this Javert.
Milan van Waardenburg as JvJ, i've seen him before in the role and still amazing. His desparation after the bishop gives him the candles and his anger at Javert during the confrontation are so strongly felt ugghh...
I love the intro to another day older it's so goooood
FANTINE'S I DREAMED A DREAM GAVE ME SO MANY CHILLLLLSSSS AMAZING, she's so amazing the sadness in her voice........
I actor that plays thenardier is really funny but i find his song line delivery a bit bland sorry... The litlle bits he throws between are perfectly delivered though. BUT THENARDIERS WIFE ON THE OTHER HAND IS AMAZINGGG SHE DOES IT PERFECTLY NOT A SINGLE MISS I SWEAR
Marius is perfectly in love as he should the actor has such a clear song voice
Enjolras has a really strong voice, he stands a bit awkwardly? But his body language is so clear and he sings beautifully
Grantaire perfect line delivery gudjjd
Eponine has a beautiful voice i'm really looking forward to her solo next act omgggg
Colette's voice i so high i always forget my mouth falls open every time she sings it's so beautiful
The shared song between cosette, eponine and Marius DID NOT DISSAPOINTTT THEY WERE AMAZING
ALSO I WILL NEVER STOP TALKING ABOUT ONE DAY MORE IT WAS SO GOOD SO GOOD CHILLLLS CHILLLS
I'm really looking forward to act 2 I NEED TO LOOK UP THE ACTOR NAMESS ufjdhssjsbz
Act 2
On my own gets me EVERYTIME TIME. Stunning performance by Aviva Tulley as Eponine omghf.
When Gavroche called Javert out he dropped the act so quickly LMAO. He started practically snarling at the barricade boys like a restrained dog 10/10.
A this point Enjolras really clicked with me. Before i thought he stood awkwardly but that's not really true. His body language is really clear and his anger palpable, you can fully see him as an intimidating, angry and passionate revolutionary leader.
Grantaire n Enjolras drink with me was really good. When Grantaire was singing his bit Enjolras walked up to him and looked him dead in the eyes, they held eye-contact for the entire part of Grantaire's bit. After he was done singing his part he kinda slowly reached out to Enjolras and touched him on the lower chest area. The screens cut out then so i missed half a second, but Enjolras kinda shoved him out of the way and went to join the other Amis. Ehm, yeah i see u.
Gavroche's part with picking up the bullets wasn't included :(
When JvJ cut Javert's bounds ohghh. There was a full 5 second staredown between the two, WITHOUT MUSIC. Javert took a tentative step towards Valjean but then growled and turned around when Valjean told him to leave. Ohh it was v good.
The following deterioration of Javert was also really good ejishdidd. His soliloquy was beautiful he sounded incredibly lost. He didn't hold the ending for very long though so :( still amazing tho
JvJ carrying Marius on his shoulder was NOT something i expected. Usually they do a litlle shuffle, arm-over-shoulder type deal. Really hammers home how strong JvJ (and thus Milan) is HELP. Also he carried him off stage in bridal style afterwards.
Drink with me also gets me every time. ITS SO SADD i get close to tears everytime. Marius sounded like he was about to burst out in tears at some point. It was really good.
AND THEN JVJ DYING AND THE ENDING WHERE EVERYONE SINGS TO THE AUDIENCE..... also gets me EVERYTIME oh my god it was amazing
I HAVE TO GET TO THE CAR I'LL FINISH UP EVERYTHING TOMORROW UFGHDHS IT WAS SO GOOD SO GOOD HELP MEEE
The performance was STELLAR. I was sad about the staging because there is very litlle, but it makes sense since they're on tour. Bradley Jaden is one of my fav Javert actors now. I've seen Milan before and he's amazing as everytime before, his 'Bring me home' is AMAZING he hits the high notes without effort almost. All the Amis were really good aswell. Cosette, Marius and Eponine were perfect togheter, all their harmonies were beautiful no notes. I just ughhh... It's really good it really is i'm so happy i got to watch it for my birthday. It's probably gonna be a long time before i can see it on stage again so. This'll be haunting my sleep for at least a few weeks.
Thanks for reading
#thanks for the review/notes!#also wow at Hans Peter Janssens playing Valjean Javert and now the Bishop#Les Misérables musical

"anthem" is a beautiful song, but i have a bit of an issue with how it's presented in the chess productions i have so far watched (på svenska & in concert)
if Anatoly really is singing about love for his country, which is what the visual presentation is leaning into, there is not a lot in the musical itself up until then to convey that. it comes out of nowhere, that Anatoly suddenly has this love for it.
this of course ties into the larger issue with how Chess tries to be very "both-sides" about its criticisms of the US & USSR, drawing false equivalency & feeding into some anticommunist tropes. but to be fair, that's not unique to this musical. (this is not me saying that there is nothing to critique about the ussr, absolutely there is, but that discussion is difficult to have when a lot of media misrepresents the soviet union and its history)
that said, I don't think "Anthem" should be removed. I would see two possible ways to make it fit more into the musical:
change the relationship between Molokov & Anatoly at least somewhat. making them friends/on good terms would add an additional layer of conflict to Anatoly's decision to defect, and would allow for Molokov to be a more complex and interesting character
OR: lean even more into how Anatoly's only real allegiance is to Chess. How he is a lot more like Freddie than he thinks he is. Make "Anthem" also about Anatoly singing to the game, about her.
Of course these are just rough thoughts and i'd love to hear what others have to say on this!
#I usually read 'Anthem' as reflecting in Anatoly's character that:#(1) despite hating Molokov's 'third-rate propaganda' patriotism he does -not- want his defection to be an anti-Soviet political statement#(of which Freddie later accuses him in 'The Interview' in West End-based versions)#instead he rejects US vs. USSR nationalism as a whole and believes that the essence of his country is beyond mere politics and war#and (2) his love for his country is a very abstract and idealised sentiment not tied to real concrete places and people#which is how he can say 'I don't -leave- anything!' while actively leaving his wife/children/family...#but also it does depend a lot on the specific production because versions of Chess differ so much that they're practically distinct stories#(especially among languages -- since Svenska was mentioned I rewatched 'Anthem' in it with translations because I don't know Swedish#and it's quite different in both context and lyrical content compared to many English-language versions#-- notably Anatoly is addressing only himself and not the press/reporters/public which makes it seem more that he's speaking sincerely#and also 'my land's only borders lie around my heart' becomes 'my land in my heart has no borders' which is interesting)#Chess musical

Very personal-pet-peeve moment but it is incredibly cringe to describe 25-year-olds as "kids". Not too long ago that was the median age a woman gave birth to their first child. You can complete a full term of enrollment in the army by then. Everyone *knows* it is bullshit and when convenient the card will be flipped. Don't waste my time.
#at 20-25 years the great majority of people are constitutionally capable of mature reasoning and decision-making#it's more that social expectation of that capability has decreased in some contexts#also. I'm really not a fan of people using 'being under 25 years old' as a reason why an individual is unqualified for a job/task#if you want to criticise a specific individual there are much better and more relevant criticisms to make#age is not all that closely correlated with ability in this context and people of the same age can be at drastically different levels

I do have a sense of right and wrong, but it is apparently unreliable and frequently directly opposed to what the great majority of other people believe, although I spend a good deal of time thinking about ethics and morality. So I think it would be a bad idea to trust my beliefs about what I should do with a high degree of confidence. This doesn't mean that I always have confidence in the beliefs of lawmakers/politicians/the voting public about what I should do, but all else aside, I'd consider the existence of a law mandating that I do something to be weak evidence that I should do it. Granted, I would call myself not a 'smart' person in this respect, and most people probably have moral intuitions more in line with each other's than with mine, but in my opinion most people have at least some reason not to trust -too much- in their beliefs.
It's really weird to me when smart people have like, abstract respect for obeying the law. There are a huge number of laws that are bad! You should obey the law exactly insofar as it is in your self interest (it often is!) and otherwise follow your own moral code. Like. The social contract isn't real. I didn't sign shit, and if I did, it would be under coercion!
#if people trust entirely in their individual moral codes without considering the external information of what other people believe#I think in the aggregate they do worse at morality#and the law is one source of information which is somewhat useful a decent amount of the time#either about people's general preferences for others' behaviour or about practices in fields that require specific expertise to understand
