Scattered
Color has always been an integral part of the human experience. It has been there for us since we first opened our eyes. Those who are color blind are often saddened by the fact that they miss out on the beauty that most experience and there have even been glasses created to help correct color blindness. On the other end of the spectrum, those with synesthesia, which is where one sense is confused or combined with another- often sight, so things such as sounds or letters will correlate and be perceived along with a color. The people who experience this condition see the world much more vibrantly than the rest of us. Color, though, is not just meant to give us beauty. It has been proven that color has a great impact on us psychosomatically, on everything from our mood, our depth perception, and the way we perceive temperature, along with more (https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/people-places-and-things/201504/the-surprising-effect-color-your-mind-and-mood). Color is truly what shapes how we see the world.
Scattered is a light centered art installation that consists of a large kaleidoscopic skylight that projects onto a white, dome-shaped room. A large-scale kaleidoscope extends from the oculus roof of the room and contains layers of multicolored gems and colored glass sheets within it. As the sun shines through, light projects the different colors around the room. These layers within this kaleidoscope have corresponding cranks located at points along the surrounding wall that people can turn to manipulate the light and adjust the way it interacts with space. The result is a multi-colored menagerie of light scattered all around the room. The idea behind this design as it separates from the original purpose of representing fleeting moments would be highlighting the effect of color on the individual. As a participant would enter into the installation they would be given a heart rate monitor bracelet, which would be used to track their pulse rate in regards to different color. So as the light in the room shifted from primarily blue to primarily red, their heart rate would increase. At the end of their time with Scattered, they would be printed a piece of paper the shows the ups and lows of their pulse inside of the exhibit, and its corresponding colors. Therefore, the takeaway of Scattered would be the fleetingness of moments in life as well as how big of an impact these moments can have on us as individuals.
