Usually Mat had a "finders keepers" mentality that was mirrored in damn near every other animal he's ever met, but Manny had proven without a shadow of a doubt that he had found this pile of smelly junk first, the other rat lived here in this dump (a place that made Mat's abandoned wine cellar with the rest of his colony look like a 5-star mansion) and it wouldn't be right to come into the older rat's house and take his stuff right from under his nose, so he freely let the older rat grab his paw and move it without much resistance .

❝ 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝? ❞ —Was this how outdoor rats lived? Cause frankly this was not the outdoor, roofless life Mat wanted to bring Nat (his girlfriend) into with him. As an indoor rat, when he imagined outdoors it had all been picturesque sunsets and green grass. Imagine taking Nat from her pampered life as a house pet into this. He couldn't do that to Nat.

Ineffably polite yet stern. When the young rat had reached out to lift a trinket; some human-thing that could be made into a weapon or some other gadget, a thin, but strong paw had zipped out of the dark and snagged his wrist. And thus Manny slipped out of the junk-pile, lithe as a snake.

"This particularly heap is spoken for, my lad. But you don't seem to be from around here."

He releases him; if it had been someone in the know, he wouldn't have let them keep the limb.

Hopping onto the cat's back, Mat was suddenly able to stare down at the feline as if they were a horse. —A large, quadrupedal beast of burden able to carry his weight.

" 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐈'𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞. " Cats were predators, monstrous feral beasts that were the opposite of cute and cuddly from a rat's prospective.

  ❝ 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭. ❞ Mat had been alone for so long it was hard to imagine he had real friends in this world besides Toby, everyone else in his rat colony just tolerated him he felt.

Despite his initial answer, Thor has a strong feeling that Mat was actually talking about himself and not some hypothetical friend, but he goes along with it for the other's sake.

"Why would you even wanna look for help from Bowser of all people? Take it from me dude, it's not worth it." Not to mention, the only reason he's working for the king is because of his electrical powers and the tyrant was his only major lead home. "If you or your 'friend' need help with something, you can always come to me instead. "

It was probably a little short-sighted and childish to want something just because another mouse has it. Mat's not sure what he was thinking, (actually, he knows exactly what the stem source of this was, thinking with his stomach and not his brain ).

Come to think of it, how did the size difference between these two work? Mat hadn't a clue, he'd only been in 1 relationship in his life and he was the taller one in it. In any case, Hax had colored him all wrong. He'd never even think to ask something that invasive.

They retract their hand, using it to adjust their shoulder cape so their left arm remained covered. They weren't exactly keen on any question about that for the time being, having been shrunk was enough for them today.

Thankfully that wasn't the question on his mind. The mention of Alexander has them beaming, their tail lightly thumping on the ground.

It's true, this whole time they've only crossed paths in an ancillary way. Culminating in the fact that Mat had to learn the hard way that Hax was in a relationship with Alexander.

❝ 𝐈'𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐭, 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭'𝐜𝐡𝐚. ❞ Mat smiled, wondering how long this shrinking spell was going to last until Hax was back to normal. —However, there was one thing he was interested in even more than that.

❝ 𝐒𝐨… 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫? ❞ Mat sheepishly rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment, not knowing if they know that he knows that they're a thing.

 Who was he to judge? He's technically dating outside his species too.
