Hiking through Grayson Highlands State Park, you can see herds of wild ponies that have been in the mountains since the 1940s. Visitors are encouraged to photograph them and enjoy their presence but are urged to not feed the ponies as it can cause health and behavioral problems. 📸: @kitkat.dellinger (at Grayson Highlands State Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtBqPGolGdS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=j0ywspx9yqf6

“Historic Jamestown Island has two paved routes, one 3-mile & one 5-mile, accessible to cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. (No buses, RV’s or campers allowed due to weight limits on the loop bridges.) The island is an introduction to the natural environment the English colonists encountered some 400 years ago. Wildlife is abundant, including deer, migratory birds, and bald eagles, who live on the island year round. Many stops along the route feature historical markers, interpretive paintings, and scenic views. Several Civil War fortifications can still be found in the forests along the road. No visit to Jamestown Island would be complete without making this drive. It and the island itself seem to offer up something new with each visit and in any season. If you’ve ever found a place special enough to do that, you know the feeling I describe.” ✨ “Admission or a National Park pass is required to drive the loop. Unfortunately, it’s currently closed due to the government shutdown but the rest of the island is open with a few modifications. Please verify specifics before you visit.” ✨ Beautiful photo and awesome information from @a_colonial_candle!
