Problems of Deconstructing Whiteness: Refilling the Invisible Backpack

If you are white and attended college within the last decade, whether consciously or not, you were likely indoctrinated into the ideological vocabulary of Critical Theory. You have been exhorted to interrogate your privilege, unpack your invisible backpack, learn how to be a good ally in the struggle against white supremacy, and deconstruct your whiteness. You were constantly reminded of the racial imbalances, and the unequal power dynamics of social and class relations across racial and gender lines in all your history classes, and encouraged to write and talk about those topics. If you took a literature class, someone would invariably mention that the writers of the books on the syllabus are all/mostly dead white men, if you were lucky enough not to be reminded of it constantly by the professor, in apologetic tone.  If you took a philosophy course you would read some selection of John Rawls about the Veil of Ignorance. During that time you might have ended up in the surreal experience of hearing someone say, in an indignant tone, as though reacting to some particularly rancid and offensive fart in an elevator: “Why is this class so white?”  The idiosyncrasy of Critical Theory and its twin Intersectionality is that there is hardly any criticism or theory to it - it’s at the intersection of nil and nada. This academideological dialect and the ideas it communicates are useless in the critical analysis of contemporary events or our historical context. Anyone picking up that lens instantly becomes myopic, incapable of any observation other than “white bad male bad.” It is as simple as that. Whiteness is a fetish of those who see it as a demon to be destroyed, an egregore that they manifest into existence in their purported holy struggle against it. Whiteness is a demon, worshiped by Intersectionalists, or whatever you want to call the true believers of the cult - not, as commonly asserted, white supremacists. Intersectionality is White Supremacy by Inception.

It’s important to note the specificity of “Whiteness” - it is not capable of being universalized, “Whiteness” intentionally racialized. Although the English language has a word for those who arrogantly and thoughtlessly act under the assumption of their ethnic, or gender, superiority and privilege to the detriment of an excluded Other, that word being chauvinist, the more universally applicable word is deliberately avoided. White ethnic chauvinists exist, of the conscious variety typified by the conscious and unrepentant racists, and of the unconscious variety typified by a life of examined privilege vis-a-vis the power dynamics of their social milieu. But that’s not the word that’s being used. Chauvinism and chauvinistic attitudes per se are not the subject of critique, but only such as they manifest as Whiteness. There is very little exploration or criticism of the consequences or externalities of configurations of power, privilege and hegemony in which the assumption of the western academic leftist are subverted or inverted. The person exhorting you to examine the power dynamics in which whiteness is privileged will never write a paper critically examining the power-dynamics between a drug-dealing black pimp and the white sex-worker addict he treats as personal property, nor in a majority black-school where the sole Asian kid is viciously bullied every day explicitly for his own race. If they were to do so, they’d manage to pin the blame on Whiteness, too, because it’s the only trick they know.

When they tell you to unpack an invisible backpack, what they do not tell you is that they are about to fill it up with new and improved racist bullshit. What is being loaded onto you is not a liberation from race based injustices, nor enlightenment toward achieving that liberation, but another framework of racist assumptions and stereotypes by which you will reproduce old hegemonies. Intersectionality will take into account the color of  your skin, the kinkiness of your hair, your genital configuration, your disability status and your sexual preferences to compute your privilege quotient and speaking turn-order long before it even deigns to notice the content of your character or the value of your good-faith contributions. The whole mindset is quite literally skin deep. You could be a real amoral selfish and narcissistic piece of shit, but if you’re a disabled trans-woman of color, we have to hear what you have to say, because, well, your privilege quotient’s the winning lottery number today. You could be a saint with a heart of gold, but if you’re a white male, you’re going to the back of the line. You got too much whiteness so it’s appropriate to stack the lottery against you. That’s the whole mindset being indoctrinated into American students under the auspices of giving them a socially conscious education. All you get as a result are shallow racists of the fascist and anti-fascist varieties, those that react against the indoctrination, and  those that acquiesce to it. But that’s just among the whites - with people of color affected by this mind parasite, you get bitter, hostile, unexamined ethnonarcissism - a topic for another time. Ultimately, racial conflicts, rather than being overcome or mitigated, are entrenched and amplified. It needs to be that way, otherwise the whole job market for critically examining those conflicts would dry up. If you want to unpack that invisible back-pack for real, you have to unpack the shit they packed in there while you weren’t looking.

Even I with my iron stomach for fascist propaganda, I had to stop listening to his podcast in 2017 because his racial takes became increasingly one note and devolved into Diet White Nationalism. The guy was a huge element of the "libertarian to alt right pipeline" through his show over the course of 2016-2017, which he's tried to distance himself from since the fiasco at Charlottesville, along with his opportunistic colleagues Mike Cernovic and Paul Joseph Watson, and his alleged sugar baby Lauren Southern. He himself promulgated many arguments which were identical to the ones pushed by the likes of The Right Stuff and other alt right outlets active at the time, with slightly less edginess - I was present to witness this, and it's all matter of public record in the archives of Freedomain Radio.

Look Stef, I get it. You want to cozy up with mainstream conservative elements now that Trumpmania dust has settled and you want to avoid alienating your potential normiecon audience.

But this statement isn't good optics for you. How can you in the same breath disavow "making light of the holocaust" and say you stand for free speech? The principle of Free Speech, as conceived among libertarians such as yourself, DEMANDS that you must permit AND DEFEND the right to not only JOKE about the holocaust, but to outright DENY its occurrence. The ACLU's defense (by Jewish attorneys no less) of the rights of Neo-Nazi demonstrators in Skokie , Illinois, and the Supreme Court's interpretation of the First Amendment concurs with me on this matter.

The underpinnings of Constitutional Free Speech is the protection of unpopular speech specifically, especially unpopular political speech, so long as it isn't an outright seditious incitement to overthrow the US government, or a specific call for violence -- "making light of the holocaust" falls into neither category. So which is it Stefan? Do you stand opposed to making light of the holocaust, or do you stand with free speech? Only one of those is a libertarian position. If the lewdness and obscenity of scat-pornography and coprophagia are Free Speech under American law, are we seriously going to pretend we're too good to permit joking about some topic in this country? You either believe in free speech, or you don't -- and, contrary to the oft-repeated slogan "hate speech is not free speech," the law of the land has the exact opposite stance on the matter. Disavowing Nationalism Is Weird - You’re Weird For Doing It

It should strike one as conspicuously odd when both liberal and conservative institutions proclaim "nationalism," not just "white nationalism," but "nationalism" as a whole anathema. To be expected from the contemporary left, and its lefter-than-itself affectations, but recently, we've seen the likes of Ben Shapiro condemn nationalism, even go so far as to say it's contrary to American values. And again, not "white nationalism" but un-hyphenated "nationalism." Such a strange thing for him to do, given he is a steadfast Nationalist. What a strangely commonplace and banal declaration in our day age... given nobody believes it when they say it.

America has a long history of supporting nationalist movements, hosting nationalist dissidents and having friendly relationships with nationalist regimes worldwide. It has a history just as long of suppressing and obstructing the same, at its convenience. The point remains that its history does not suggest that nationalism is antithetical to American ideology or praxis. Our tax money, this very second, is being spent for the benefit of many nationalist factions globally. I give a few examples of why nationalism is in no way antithetical to American values below. Tl;dr further if you don't need elaboration (this stuff really shouldn't need to be explained, it's grade-school history and on the news).

President Woodrow Wilson used the principle of national self-determination to partition the defeated Empires and redraw the map of Europe in the aftermath of the First World War - this was nationalism, and established multiple nation-states, which were ideologically -- nationalist. Theodore Roosevelt described himself as a nationalist, even though he was an Imperialist - he believed it's possible to be both [he wasn't wrong]. The United States as matter of current policy stands on many matters, even in the face of criticism on all sides, with the nation of Israel, a Zionist project - Zionism is just Nationalism of the Jewish variety [it's also the variety of nationalism to which Ben Shapiro adheres]. The Palestinian organizations opposed to Israel are also nationalist organizations, by and large (some Marxist ones are active too). The Nazis and Fascists were nationalists, this is very true - as were those apparent war-criminal Serbs in Bosnia. So were the Kosovar Albanians on whose behalf the United States bombed Belgrade. America's preferred side in the Chinese Civil War, the one opposed to Mao Ze Dong, led by Chiang Kai Shek, are identified the Nationalists in history books. Taiwan, the One True China that the United States supported before Nixon Went to China - was the last stand of the Republic of China Nationalists. Those who supported "Free Tibet" back when that was a thing people cared about were supporters of Tibetan Nationalism. India's Gandhi was an Indian nationalist . Those heroic Kurds fighting our Middle Eastern enemies du jour - many are Kurd nationalists seeking the establishment of a Kurd nation - Kurdistan. The Ukrainians to whom the United States promised military aid which Trump held back for assurance of favors are Ukrainian nationalists (plenty of fascists among them).The Founding Fathers actively and consciously engaged in the declaration, establishment and administration of a new nation, separate from the one by whose investment and authority it was initially settled, and defined it consciously, intentionally, and explicitly - racially. They were Nationalists themselves. They were White Nationalists, specifically. If you're being honest and historically-conscious -- you have to admit the vast majority of American presidents, statesmen, politicians, and notable figures were White Nationalists - even among the famous abolitionists up to and including Abraham Lincoln, as well as most of his successors of all political parties -- and without excluding those of African descent, or women of abolitionist, prohibitionist, or suffragist variety. But things do change. "White-nationalism" is passe now (or is it back in vogue? pending appeal) -- it's not invalid to assert that African-Americans or Native Americans, etc. be included within the nation of the United States of America. Un-hyphenated, general Nationalism however has not gone out of style internationally, or as an object of American support and subsidy as my brief survey demonstrates, and as should be self-evident by any casual observer's faculties. [Aside: many of America's hated enemies: Al Qaeda, ISIS, the Ba'ath Party -- are internationalist and transnationalist; most Islamic terrorism is not nationalist in nature -- the War on Terror is international character, and none of the countries in Bush II's "Axis of Evil" and identified as state sponsors of terrorism are nationalist regimes; Islam is trans-national].

So, why do people stand there with a straight face, on both sides of the aisle, and condemn/disavow "nationalism" as a whole now, when they know they don't believe that shit? How are people capable of asserting, without really any actual evidence for it beyond gooey sentimentalism, that it is contrary to American values, and how do so many just accept it as self-evident, when it's contrary to all the easily accessible and publicly available historical evidence? If anything, being anti-nationalist is contrary to the American historical tendency and current praxis than being any kind of nationalist. There's no distinction being drawn between chauvinistic ultra-nationalism (the kind that draws greedy irrendentist maps, and says stuff like Deutschland Uber Alles) and garden-variety nationalism. We are being expected to treat them as one and the same. Isn't this what they call "gas-lighting"? No, I'm pretty sure there's such a concept as ultra-nationalism as distinct from nationalism, which is worthy of condemnation by most rational people, no doubt -- it's really not controversial to think ultra-nationalism sucks... But that isn't the word being used. Do you really mean "nationalism" that generally... in which case, are we all supposed to be Internationalists now, or what? How's the entire political establishment now pushing Internationalism -- Is America A Communist Country suddenly? [yes, but ]

When you think about it, as totalitarian and brutal North Korea is, at least when you're consuming a product there you don't have to consider how it affects some guy over in the Congo, or in Chad. For us, unless you're willing to go off the grid and live off the land, like you're Amish, or in some monastery or kibbutz or a gypsy camp in the desert with all the other junkie hippy drop outs, you're going to be benefiting from someone's slavery. Since you're really can't, and even if you could, you won't, do something about it, you might as well not even feel bad about it while you're at it. What's the point? No one's shedding any tears for the spreadsheet jockey entrapped into his wage-slavery by the forces of global capitalism - his cubicle farm is at least air conditioned. But we're all victims here, and the way you deal with trauma is by making peace and integrating it into your survival instincts. People say we live in a democracy/democratic republic, a form of government intended to amplify what people think and address problems they find to be important. But it doesn’t ever seem to function that way.
