how i hc the colors work for Four!

Basically, im gonna ramble about how i write and see the colors for the four sword, and what i think the colors are like, since many people see them in different ways and i wanted to talk about how i do! this is not meant to discredit or say any other way of reading/writing four is "wrong", this is just me sharing my own way of doing it. all the ways four is portrayed in different fics ive seen are awesome! :)

-Okay! So, starting off before we get into the different colors, I just want to make a basic summary of how I see them.

-I see the four sword as something that, rather than duplicating you into four people, splits you apart into four. basically, it doesn't multiply, it divides.

-specifically, it divides your personality and who you are as a person.

-let's say you love art, writing, video games and exercise, as a lighthearted example. if you drew the four sword, each of your colors would be super passionate on just one of those things, rather than all four hobbies

-this isn't exactly how i see four since it's a bit more personal than just hobbies in the division, but it's a basic example

-this also means your colors will grow with you!

-if your personality changes over time, so will your colors. those core aspects of you will stay the same, but some parts of them can change

-basically the concept behind your colors will stay the same since those are the roots of your personality, but they can also change in some areas

-I also wanted to make the colors have something to do with their element, for funsies :)

-so, in my fics, when four is split the colors may seem a bit 2D personality wise, and that's because in my hc they aren't actually full people, just part of a person

-this makes them a bit more shallow, but i will try to make them have enough depth to still be nice to read and relatable

-okay lol sorry for the ramble, hopefully that made it semi-clear?

-now then, onto the actual colors!

-Green is the wind; when it playful tousles your hair, when it helps keep you cool on a hot summer day, when it guides sails to get the boat to shore, when it rustles leaves to create a symphony in the wild

-Green is the color that comes from when Four would laugh with Zelda in the market, or when he would run aimlessly through the fields just to see the world zoom past him

-Green is there when Four laughs with the others by the fire at night, when he teases Wars about his "lady issues", when he can feel the excitement of the battle in his bones

-he's energetic, fun loving, caring and free

-basically, he represents Four's love of life and of those around him

-while Green is the leader of the colors, that doesn't mean he's exactly responsible

-i mean how many times in the manga do him and Blue tease each other or get competitive over dumb things? you can't tell me this man is super mature

-that being said, while he's usually rather lighthearted, he does know when he needs to take charge and be serious

-he doesn't like it, but he is arguably one of the more stable colors, and he's the only one who can fulfill the leader role

-he can't shout out orders like Time or Wars can, but he can help the others cope, and he can take charge in a situation or try to fix something before it goes awry

-when Four first used the four sword, Green was rather lighthearted and fun, joking around despite the gravity of the situation and wanting to get to know his other colors

-however, as that journey continued, Green quickly learned that sometimes laughter wasn't safe, and would only hold you back

-he lost some of that free-spirited nature on that journey, which led to Four being much more mature by the time the adventure was over

-that's not to say he lost all of it, of course- but some of those gusts were forced to settle into a breeze instead

-Green is the mirthful, young wind that had to grow up in order to survive

-Red is a gentle flame; the warmth that embraces you by a campfire, the torch that lights up the dark tunnel, the fire within us all that burns bright no matter the circumstances

-Red comes from when Four would hug Zelda on a bad day, or when he'd help his grandfather in the forge when the mans age caught up to him

-Red is there when Four went to make sure Wild's okay while Twilight was injured, or when he tries to reassure his brothers during tough times, when he tends to the wounded after a fight

-he's gentle, kind, optimistic and compasstionate

-Red represents Four's empathy and connection with others

-he may seem childlike or oblivious sometimes, but that's on purpose

-he's learned overtime that falling into despair only makes others do the same, so Red will go out of his way to act optimistic no matter how he may actually feel

-that being said, his mask has cracks

-he can't always stay strong, especially when Four is split

-without Green's leadership, Blue's resilience and Vio's wisdom, it's a lot harder to pretend everything's alright

-Red keeps the peace when they're split, he's the only reason they didn't all murder each other in Four Swords

-Red started off being very open and kind, at the start of Four Swords

-he wasn't afraid to show how he felt, and he was the only one willing to feel Four's feelings, to admit when things were scary or tough

-but he was quickly called out for this, both by the other colors and by people around him

-he was called childish, immature, a crybaby, weak

-and after a while of these comments and little to no progress, Red learned that a hero doesn't get to be scared or sad

-so he stopped

-he was still kind to others, and he'd keep the peace, but no longer would he quietly admit at night how terrified he was

-his tears were left unshed

-Red is the candle that learned to be dim, because burning bright only led to pain

-Blue is the water; when the waves crash against a ship, when the rain relentlessly attacks all it touches, when water freezes into ice, when tears stream down your face

-Blue comes from when Vaati laughed as Zelda turned to stone, when Four would collapse from exhaustion after a dungeon even when Ezlo insisted they kept going, when the other kids at school pushed Four around for whatever reason

-Blue is there when someone is injured in battle and Four charges ahead, or when he snaps after a joke is pushed too far, when Four scolds Legend for freezing the sword he was making

-he's frustrated, protective, brave and resilient

-Blue represents Four's trauma and feelings of helplessness

-he's been hurt so many times, and if a heart is stabbed too much it will freeze over to save itself the pain

-Blue lashes out a lot, because as the embodiment of that pain, it's overwhelming

-one person can handle that trauma reasonably well, since they have their other qualities to help them cope

-Blue, however, doesn't have that, and therefor can't cope healthily

-he's often seen as the angry one because of this, but there's more to him than that

-Blue's very protective of those he loves and cares for, since he's the part of Four that watched helplessly as Zelda was made into a statue, he's the part that felt so vulnerable after Ezlo was gone and all he had was a hat as a memory

-but when you're vulnerable, when you show you're hurting, you just get hurt even more

-at least, that's what he's learned from his experiences

-the bullies never stopped when he cried, the monsters still attacked when he screamed in pain, Zelda didn't come back even when he begged

-so Blue turns that fear, that helplessness into anger

-anger can be a blade in a battle, anger can protect you

-he fails to realize that it can also push those who are trying to help you away

-Blue is the lake that froze over, so it's waters won't be polluted and killed

-Vio is the earth; everlasting beneath your feet, always growing and expanding, a mystery to many even when in plain sight

-Vio comes from the wonder Four first entered the Minish Village, the awe as he learned how to smith from his grandpa, the pride when he got something done

-Vio is there when Four helps out with a puzzle, or makes a sly comment, or when he realized from Legend that anti-fairies can be turned into regular ones

-he's curious, calm, quiet and cunning

-Vio represents Four's curiosity and maturity

-he's by no means all-knowing, but he is good at learning about things around him and adapting to a new challenge

-Four had to do that to survive several times in Minish Cap, and Vio has learned that skill too

-while he wants to be a leader, Vio lacks the empathy, stability and resilience the others have, making him a pretty bad leader

-he can figure out problems just fine, but he can't communicate well with others, so he kind of just expects people to be on the same page as him sometimes even if they're not

-Vio can be cold sometimes, due to being the color that is the least connected to Four's emotions and trauma

-he may seem unfeeling, but make no mistake, he very much has emotions

-he often struggles to understand people around him, too- he can solve any puzzle and knows pretty much everything about the environment around him, but people are a mystery to him

-(yes, he's autism-coded. let me project damnit)

-this makes Vio come off as insensitive a lot, and it can make other people believe he doesn't care

-he shows his love in little ways, though

-talking about things he's learned, offering portions of his meal, sharing supplies he has, tending to the wounded after a fight- he does care, i promise

-so no, Vio isn't the "evil" color, but the logical part of a person can struggle with emotional intelligence

-Vio is the whispers in the leaves, trying desperately to convey their secrets, but almost never being heard

Theres often talk about Legends trauma and how he tries to distance from his emotions, how his experiences have affected him, and in turn I also like to think about how Ravio operates with his own trauma. This might sound pretty silly but I think both of them are equally as terrible at dealing with their issues. Ravio is still Links counterpart after all, and I'm more than sure he's gone through a fair share of things, especially hailing from Lorule. There's just differences in how they handle it. While Legend is often written to be repressing his trauma and keeping himself tight under lock and key, Ravio seems to be pretty casual about mentioning bad happenings. It kinda feels as if Ravio would make light of his own trauma, hardships or bad experiences before quickly brushing them off/playing them off as jokes. He sort of does this ingame, after all? The way he says it makes you unable to take him seriously, but when you really think about what he's saying...

"Finally, no more sleeping in the wild. Tough world out there, you know?" "But—! But—! But aren't we buddies? You'd kick me out? Into that cruel, cruel world out there? Please? You don't know what it's like trying to get some shut-eye with all those creepy-crawlies!"

You could argue that he's only saying this to garner sympathy and pity from Link. But since he escaped Lorule without knowing if he could ever even return....yeahhh, I think there's a lot of truth here. Casually hinting at how he he had to sleep outside while worrying about being left defenseless to monsters... I don't think Ravio really lies (much). He's just pretty good at omitting information. He's also really good at playing a character. Ravio also says some pretty weird and mildly concerning stuff once he's "in retirement" and being all philosophical on Links floor.

"I always thought sleeping all day would be fun. But now I think I'd miss breakfast and lunch, right? Yeah, I've got a new outlook on life, and it's all thanks to you, Mr. Hero!"

"For a long time, I believed that if you put your ear to the ground, you'd hear the world's heart beating. That the world just goes on living, whether you were there or not. Weird, right? And sorta sad. So I've been listening here for a while, and you know the only heart I've heard? Mine! I couldn't be happier. Ha! I've got a new outlook on life, and it's all thanks to you, Mr. Hero!"

"You know, whenever I used to just lounge around... I would think how I'm just a tiny speck in a great, big world. And I still believe that I'm a teeny, tiny, little speck in a world that's SO much bigger than I ever thought! But even a speck can change the world if he puts his heart into it. I've got a new outlook on life, and it's all thanks to you, Mr. Hero!"

"I've never really had the time to take a lot of naps before. The world looks so different from here! Sometimes just changing your perspective is the key to... well, to everything! I've got a new outlook on life, and it's all thanks to you, Mr. Hero!"

"When I look at you, Mr. Hero, I now realize that just about anything is possible if you put heart into it. Ha! Seems like it's about time for me to decide where to put MY heart!"

It's a lot of fun, trying to imagine what the future holds. Ha! I've got a new outlook on life, and it's all thanks to you, Mr. Hero!

One thing that does become pretty evident though is how Links presence and the land of Hyrule itself seems to have had a really positive and healthy influence on Ravio and his psyche. He appears to have been a lot more somber before, but meeting Link and experiencing his courage firsthand has helped Ravio grow too, to the point he was able to develop a happier, positive outlook on life. Meanwhile you could argue that Legends become more bitter overtime on his outlook on life the more adventures he has to go through (lol). Hmm...yeah, I didn't really have anywhere specific I was going with this. It's just another interesting parallel to me how Legends personality and portrayal would clash with his counterparts. They're interesting to me, they compliment and play off each other well...they process and experience life so similarly yet differently...

(It’s been a while, and hopefully everyone who wanted to has already had the chance to play the game, but I’m gonna warn y’all and tag this as totk spoilers just in case.)

Info:

Daruk’s journal from BotW mentions Wild eating rocks. I believe the alt-timeline version of him does eat rocks in AoC, and rock-hard food is a cookable item made from ores in the wild era. Flora, of course, just looked at Daruk and politely declined when offered rocks. Smart.

Wheaton and Pita’s pastries and pies from Minish Cap have kinstones (small rocks) baked into them. When removed, the kinstones can be paired with other kinstones to make magical things happen. You’re definitely not supposed to eat them :).

Flora eats a rock in TotK. It all worked out in the end, but it certainly wasn’t a pleasant experience.

Man, I gotta finish coloring that other sketch of my updated post-TotK Flora and Wild designs… someday… 🥲

Gonna be honest here, if I was in Zelda's place, I would have such a massive crush on Link, it'd be downright infuriating. Cute boy with excellent taste in cloaks shows up outta nowhere to beat the crap out of the demon pig that kidnapped me, makes sure to get me out safely even as he's being swallowed by the void, then when I go asking around town about him, I find out he's the sweetest, most selfless guy on Hylia's green earth?? My dude's been fighting the rift monsters by himself even though no one asked him to and he gets nothing in return for it??? He lost his voice rescuing a bunch of children from the shadow realm???? He really rushed out to save me despite never having met me before??!!!!?!?! Yeah, there's no way I'm busting him out of the Still World without a marriage proposal at the ready.

The cast of Octopath Traveler (2018) cross stitched in every single one of their job outfits! I could not be more proud of how they’ve come out!

I first started charting these in November/December 2021. I started stitching them in June 2022. By my estimates, it was around 80 hours of charting and ~580 hours of cross stitching over 2.5 years, so a truly massive project. I’m planning to mount them in a scrapbook soon but wanted one more picture of them all together first.

I completed Those Who Govern Reason (the four gods/secret job bosses from Octopath Traveler) between January - August 2021.

Averaging around 160 stitch square on 16 count navy aida, they are, without question, the biggest cross stitchings I’ve ever completed. They’re also, by far, the ones I’m most proud of. Pride of place on my shelf behind the Octopath 2 busts.
