Guinea Fowl Farming and Management Techniques
Guinea fowl production provides huge opportunities for food and income security in different countries and is a potential export commodity. Guinea fowl rearing requires minimum capital since they have the propensity to scavenge and fed for themselves. Guinea fowl are becoming increasingly popular among keepers of small and backyard flocks. Guineas are vigorous, hardy, and largely disease-free birds.
Reasons people raise guinea fowl.
•The birds sound an alarm whenever anything unusual occurs on the farm.
• Guinea fowl do not suffer from many pests and diseases when compared to chickens.
•Keeping guinea fowl is an effective means of pest control as flocks of guineas kill and eat mice and small rats.
• Guinea fowl can be used to control insects. Wild guineas eat mainly insects, and domestic guineas can consume large amounts of insects without affecting garden vegetables or flowers.
• Guinea fowl provide protein. The flesh of young: guinea fowl is tender and has a flavour like indigenous game meat. Guinea fowl flesh is firmer and tastier than chicken. The yield of edible meat after cooking is high (80%), compared to 65% for chicken. The meat is lean (ie. has less fat) than chicken.
• Guineas reduce keepers' risk of Lyme disease by consuming deer ticks, which carry the disease.
• For show: Many poultry shows include a class of guinea. Guinea fowl can typically be entered in one of two classes—breeding (judged according to a Standard of Perfection) and market (judged according to body conformation as it relates to meat production)
•. Guinea fowl can also be raised for meat and egg production.
• Guinea fowl do well on free range and move large distances to find their own food. They can therefore be fed quite cheaply.
• Guinea fowl are prolific layers (ie. they produce many eggs). Each guinea fowl hen can lay an average of 100 eggs in each year. These eggs can be incubated using chickens or an incubator to produce guinea fowl chicks or keets.
Three main varieties of guinea fowl
1. pearl
2. white
3. lavender.

Soybean cultivation and management tips
Soyabean is a legume plant suited to soils with a relatively high clay content, as they do not do very well on weak sands. The crop is also sensitive to soil acidity. Soyabean requires reliable rainfall, particularly from flowering to pod maturity. It is a good crop to grow in rotation with maize, cotton and wheat. The yields of these other crops are usually enhanced when following soyabean, as shown in the Table below. Soyabean is a nutritious addition to human and animal feed. It is also used in making cooking oil, margarine, soya chunks etc. It is the richest crop in terms of crude protein (ranges between 40-42 %) and contains 20 % oil.
As a cool-season crop, soybean seeds require soil temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees to germinate. Plants require air temperatures of at least 68 degrees during the summer, about 25 inches of water and about five months from germination to harvest. Soybeans respond to the length of days and begin to flower as nights become longer. Select varieties that have been specifically adapted to your area.
Season
The majority of soybeans are grown in the main wet season (MWS) and fit well in an upland crop rotation in combination with maize, pigeon pea, sesame and groundnuts. As they are a nitrogen (N) fixing legume, if inoculated correctly with rhizobia, they will leave behind some N in the soil for the next crop to use. The crop is grown under warm conditions in the tropics, subtropics and temperate climates. Soybean is relatively resistant to low and very high temperatures but growth rates decrease above 35°C and below 18°C. In some varieties, flowering may be delayed at temperatures below 24°C. Minimum temperatures for growth are about 10°C and for crop production about 15°C. Only 25 to 30 percent of the flowers produce set pods, the final number depending on the plant vigour during the flowering period. Year to year temperature variations can lead to differences in flowering.
Soybean grows well in warm and moist climate. A temperature of 26 to 30°C appears to be the optimum for most of the varieties. Soil temperatures of 15.5°C or above favor rapid germination and vigorous seedling growth. A lower temperature tends to delay the flowering. Day length is the key factor in most of the soybean varieties as they are short day plants. Get a complete guide on Soybean cultivation and management tips by following the link below.
