'Irredeemable media' is such a funny concept to me because it's never used for stuff like Birth of a Nation or A Serbian Film. It's always The Owl House or My Hero Academia because these people only watch things for children and can't stand any conflict more complex than Super Mario Brothers.

Trump’s defunding of CPB means a massive loss to all local PBS and NPR public broadcasting stations. But based on their ability to get sponsorships, advertisers, other grants, private donations, state funding, and membership subscribers, some stations will end up hit a lot harder than others.

And some of the hardest hit stations, the ones who had been relying most heavily on this federal funding, are Native American and Indigenous Nations’ local stations. Radio stations in rural areas and on reservations can often be a really important source of locally relevant information—and publicly available media in Native languages.

Unfortunately, many Native American-serving public media stations listed on Adopt A Station don't have donation or support pages that I can find (KGHR - Greyhills Academy in the Navajo Nation in Arizona; KGVA - The Voice of the Aaniiih and Nakoda Nations in Montana; KSHI - The Voice of the A:shiwi in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico; KCUW - Umatilla Reservation Community Radio in Oregon; KTNN - The Voice of the Navajo Nation broadcasting from Arizona; KUHB - The Voice of the Pribilofs in St. Paul, Alaska; KDSP - Sand Point in Alaska... if you can find any, let me know! And certainly if you're in the area, show them some support!)

But one that's actively running a fundraiser that could absolutely use more support is KUYI - Hopi Radio in Arizona. Broadcasting from the seat of the Hopi government in Kykotsmovi, KUYI includes local news from the Hopi reservation and programming in the Hopi language. They're also set to lose 60% of their funding with the CPB funds rescinded. Donate to support them here—they’re aiming to raise $25,000 for their 25th anniversary, and as of the time of this posting have raised $1,660.

it was a mistake that, in fighting to de-pathologise queerness, a lot of people ended up arguing that there is a defined group of experiences that should be pathologised, but that being queer is not one of them. a lot of queer people have gotten far too comfortable with the authority and power granted to medical and psychiatric systems because. well. they were wrong about homosexuality in the past but some experiences are objectively deviant and non-normative and need to be subjected to an external authority

even now, when people argue against “gender dysphoria” as a diagnosis, there is often this undercurrent of “because our experiences aren’t the experiences of a crazy person”. well imagine if you were, legally speaking, crazy. imagine if you were no longer trusted to self-report on your internal world and your own best interests. imagine if you could have autonomy removed from you at a moment’s notice because it’s “for your own good”. you have to get more comfortable softening the lines between the sane non-disordered transsexual and the insane/disabled/disordered/diseased. nothing else is satisfactory

The Soviet Union has an attitude to emigration which is contrary to that currently prevalent in the West. There are two aspects to it. One concerns the rational use of resources while the other stems from socialist morality. The Soviet Union has experienced full employment since the beginning of the Second Five Year Plan in 1934. In effect it has been short of labour, a situation seriously worsened by the casualties of the Second World War. Thus the labour situation imposed on the Soviet Government a dire need to conserve labour power by preventing wastages to other countries as well as by controlling its domestic utilization. Both types of measures would, in any event, have resulted from the government's use of centralized planning measures. It would have been illogical and self-defeating to plan the use of all resources except labour power. The planned use of labour, however, involved restricting the right of individuals to take their skills to another country.

There is a moral argument against free emigration. If, for instance, the emigration of a physician prevents a community from having adequate health care whose right should be given priority? Should the doctor's right to leave the society be protected or should the community's right to health care be upheld? The issue has been crudely expressed through the experience of India where the unrestricted emigration of skilled medical practitioners to Western countries has been allowed while in India itself there have been less than 3 doctors for every 10 000 population compared with more than 15 doctors in Britain and more than 20 doctors in the USA for every 10 000 population. The problem is resolved in a socialist society through the predominance of collectivist values over individualistic ones so that the interests of individuals are not allowed to have priority over those of a community. There is, therefore, no moral dilemma for the Soviet Union when presented with requests from skilled personnel to emigrate. It simply asks whose interests would be affected and in what ways and then takes the side of the community.
