tumblr → discord cheat sheet

this is roughly the post i wish i had when i was diving into discord a while ago and i had no idea what any terms meant relative to what i was used to in tumblr. there are probably better resources out there for this already. idk.

so from what i’ve seen in discord, you’ll usually have:

a server per partner. discord is mutual follows or bust, more or less

‘making a server’ may sound intimidating but the hardest part is deciding who’s going to do it and then coming up w/ a name tbh

rping without a server and inside discord dms is possible, just might just make ooc chat awkward. it’s basically rping in tumblr ims

after you make a server (big plus button on the left), you’ll need to send your partner an invite to it

at least one channel in the server for ooc chat (the default #general works well for this)

roughly a channel per thread overall

channel categories to organize things w/ if you want. not required. i’ve seen all sorts of permutations for ooc chats and ic threads across categories. a good starting point may be just “ooc” and “ic” categories. general chat and nsfw/inspo channels in the ooc category, and rp threads in the ic category. you can also do per-ship categories with channels (threads) within them

historically i think there’s been less focus on visuals as part of discord threads compared to tumblr. it was a bit more laid back because there’s not as much room for formatting in discord, and including images is a bit more awkward. that may change considering any exodus from tumblr to discord will be nontrivially centered around visuals ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

yo, guys. i need ya’ll to help me out a bit and vote in this little poll HERE on which fc i should use for my warlock oc (associated with american horror story). i can’t seem to figure out a good fit for him.

he’s extremely dedicated to bettering himself in magic, believing that he can ascend the ranks. he’s obsessed with the idea of becoming the ‘alpha’, it’s been his goal since he was little. he was born into a magically gifted mother, and his parents encouraged him (even though his mother was a bit…hesitant to encourage what she thought was a futile belief)

he’s a bit full of himself, thinks he’s better than most everyone else at the school although he isn’t so much of an ass to everyone. you can just kinda tell that he thinks he’s an elite. 

his father was an avid satanist, but his mother was fairly disconnected from that as his father kept it hidden from her for as long as he could. however, he grew up with that influence as well. 

when it comes to the plotline of apocalypse, i’d assume he’s just…a fighter. maybe he was a survivor at one of the other compounds, so as to not conflict with the original story i guess? (unless ya’ll wanna plot smth out??) but he’s a fighter, used his magic to work his way through the ruined world around him and keep himself safe. 

i put a couple options on there for fcs, but other suggestions are welcome? i just figured they kinda fit my ideal image of him. this is also like…a vvvv rough draft of his personality/story. im still working out stuff

soooo due to tumblr’s n.sfw bullshit, i’m gonna be making a separate blog for ship content/aesthetics/anything that COULD be flagged as n.sfw when it comes to photo posts. i’ll also be making a new n.sfw tag for memes since EVIDENTLY erotica is supposed to be allowed, so text SHOULDNT be effected? i’m pretty sure n.sfw content won’t be completely eradicated from this site. 

truth be told, i don’t think this change will last for long. staff isn’t gonna be that fuckin’ dumb. they’re honestly gonna lose a lot of their userbase over this. i personally don’t care, but like...i give it a month after it’s actually enacted, if that even.
