File managed contact sheet

Explain Workflow
After I had completed file management I used Adobe Bridge to use the photomerge tool. This automatically made a collage of the images but it didn't look like the correct style. I manually dragged and repositioned the images to create more of a distorted and messy look. I then cropped and finalised the edit of my image.

Evaluation
I am relatively happy with the image that I have produced. I feel as if I have completed the brief and followed the techniques appropriately. The location works well and I feel as if there is a bit of confusion within the image, but you can still tell what the subject is.

Speaker Report - Lesley Macgregor
Identify an element of the talk that resonated with you.
It wasn't an element of the talk as such that resonated with me, but the style of the work being produced. It opened my mind and gave me new ways to look at subjects that were outwith the norm.
What question will/did you ask the visitor?
I regret not asking this question but if I had the opportunity again I would ask the speaker “Are there certain qualities you look for in a subject when shooting?”
How do you think this will impact your practice as a photographer?
I believe that I will draw inspiration from the speaker and put some of her methods into practice. I have already began shooting and looking at other angles for my images.

Exhibition Questions Legacy at Streetlevel  29/04/21
How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
The flyer includes the artists work on multiple sides. This advertises the exhibition as it gives a viewer an idea of what work will be on show. It also includes an interview with the artist that gives a deeper insight into the work.
What is the suitability of the gallery space? How is the exhibition laid out?
The exhibition is spread out across the two rooms within streetlevel. I believe streetlevel is an appropriate space for this work as it gives the viewer a chance to walk around and get up close and personal to the work. The work is laid out in collections of different projects. Each wall within the gallery is used to show a different collection of work.
How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work?
Each collection of work has been mounted differently, but with thought of the pieces on display. For example the “We are Social History” project was mounted on light boxes as it added more drama and context to the images.
Who made the work?
The artist that “made” the work was Nicky Bird, however she prides herself in using found or borrowed photographs from the past.
Who did they make it for, who is the audience?
I believe that Nicky Bird creates the work for herself, but through doing this is able to communicate with a general audience as the work is so relatable. She often works with images that came from working class families in close communities.
How does it make you feel?
The work almost automatically inspires you to think back to your childhood and reminisce. It also inspired me to want to look back on old photographs and look deeper into them, and not just at the actual image.
If the work has a title does it make you think about the image/s differently?
It may not necessarily make me think about the work differently but it gives some more insight on the images. This caused me to think more in depth about the images.
How would I describe it to someone later?
I would describe it as being a series of personal projects carried out by bird, but highly relatable to the average person. It has a real sense of community.
Does the photograph make you want to ask questions?
It makes me want to find out more about the people and communities within the image. It would be nice to know the relationships the photographer has gained while making the work.
Is the photograph valuable?
It depends on how you define valuable. The work is deeply valuable to the photographer as it has a personal connection to them. However in terms on monetary value I'm not sure how much the work is worth.
Is the work for sale and who might buy it?
As far as I am aware the work is not for sale.
What information is available about the artist?
There is a leaflet handed out at the exhibition which details information about the artist and includes a short interview. Bird informs us the thought behind the work and gives more insight into the projects.
Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work?
The exhibition was organised and displayed at Streetlevel.

Say What You See
Tumblr media
This was a task in simply observing. In my time at Kelvingrove Art Gallery I decided to focus on this photo.
I believe that this is an oil painting from the early 20th century. I can see there are a number of ships which makes me believe that this is a harbour. This painting gives off a feeling that it is possibly wartime, as a lot of the ships seem to be navy vessels and there are fighter planes in the sky. There are however a lot of pale blue tones throughout the image which gives a sense of calm. At closer look you see the British Flags on the ships, which are filled with shipmen.

Beauty in the Banal
New Topogrpahics
Since the term was coined by William Jenkins in 1975, the New Topograpghic style of photography changed the way people thought of landscapes. It breaks away from what people consider to be traditional landscape photography (nature, mountains, coasts) and start to incorporate manmade structures into landscape. I believe it is a beautiful form of photography and I look forward to shooting this project.

Something New
Research
The kind of image which I am going to try and create is a clean, sharp product image. There is a sense of class to these images as I believe they show off the products in their purest form.
Tumblr media
This image, shot by “Pinegate”, is the kind of image which I wish to create. I will have to think about the type and positioning of my lights to make sure that the image is sharp and all visible. I will create a lighting diagram and add it to my worksheet.

Sense of Place
Research
I had originally planned to shoot this project in the Ayrshire countryside but I had a stroke of luck. My dad had to travel up north for business and I was fortunate enough to go with him. When I found this out I decided I would shoot my project then.
Colin Prior
Tumblr media
I have been looking at the work of Colin Prior in the lead up to photographing the Scottish Hills. His work is striking and immediately captures your attention. Looking at his work has given me an idea of the kind of image I wish to produce. I will keep my eyes open at all times to look for frames I can capture.
Ansel Adams
Tumblr media
I have also been looking at the work of the legendary Ansel Adams. I find his work to be absolutely stunning and will try to take inspiration from his images. Just by looking at the images you can tell that they are not snapshots. An incredible amount of thought and precision has been put into each photograph.

I have also been research on prison and the feelings that inmates feel. I have been looking for similarities between the feelings of the inmates and the situation we are currently in today. I understand that a lot of people will feel trapped, which can be related to being trapped behind bars. I will attempt to take these feelings and communicate them through my ages.
One of the biggest similarities I can see is the 1 hour a day of exercise restriction that is in place. I will be attempting to communicate this link through my images.

This is an article I have been using to try and gain inspiration for this project. I have been finding it difficult to gain motivation for this project due to personal circumstances as well as the lockdown we are currently under. Reading this article reminded me that photography is not just taking a nice picture, but trying to convey emotion and tell a story as well. This gave me the motivation to try and create more powerful images.

I feel like I have made the correct decision with going for Prison/Isolation theme. I have been shooting images and feel as if I have been creating something interesting.
I was struggling for a while to come up with ideas but I managed to overcome the obstacle. I went for a walk and gained inspiration whilst outdoors. I was seeing bars/locks that I was drawn towards. I have captured some images that I believe will be used for my final images.

Graded Unit Development #7
After reviewing my first few shots with my lecturer I have decided I am going to shoot this project based around a Prison/Lockdown theme. I will be looking to shoot metaphors and images which could be related to prison or feeling trapped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are a few images I have already taken which match with the theme of my project. I will be looking to shoot images with a similar look/feel. I have decided that black and white would be the best way to present my images. It adds a depressing mood to the images which fits well them my theme.

Graded Unit Development #6
I believe colour and tone are very important when trying to convey the mood of an image. I will attempt to do this through my images by using tone. If I am trying to convey a sad emotion I will use a desaturated or black and white tone. I will use a brighter tone if I am capturing something that has a happier emotion to it.

The next photographer I have been looking at is Christopher Anderson. This is a photographer I found through an article that was shown to me. Anderson is an American photographer who completed a photo series titled “SON”. It is a series of images of his family that started with the birth of his son. It is an intimate set of images which helps to convey the love Anderson has for his family/son. I will try to use this technique with my family to help convey emotion. There are moments of love and anger as living on top of each other can become stressful. I will attempt to show both emotions through my images.
Tumblr media
I think this image really pushes the feelings of love Anderson has for his son. The tone and lighting of the image make it look almost angelic, especially with the rim lighting above the childs head. There is also a connection between the viewer and subject as the child is looking through the lens of the camera.

Graded Unit Development #4
As I will now be shooting primarily from my house I have began to look at work more relevant to my new project.
The first photographer I have been looking at is Josef Sudek. I came to know about this photographer through the recommendation of my tutor and have been inspired from his work. It shows the beauty of inanimate objects and helps convey a mood depending on how it is photographed. In Sudeks work the mood comes across as eerie and lonely, which I think a lot of people can relate to at this time. I will use this technique to capture objects I have around my home and convey mood through them.
Tumblr media
To me this image conveys a feeling of sadness or loneliness. The colour of the image as well as the rain on the window both have connotations of sad emotions. Flowers are also a simple yet beautiful object which I also have in my home. This image has given me inspiration to shoot based on the techniques used.

Graded Unit Development #3
As the current pandemic is unfolding and with current lockdown restrictions not looking to be lifted any time soon I will be looking to change my Graded Unit. I do not believe I will be able to travel to locations, follow social distancing rules and get quality shots in the current situation.
I have seen ideas from fellow class mates and other students within the college on social media which I have gained inspiration from. Ideas such as food photography and a self portrait series are mainly what I am drawing influence from.
I have come up with idea of “My Life in Lockdown” (a working title) which will be a series of images representing my life during the current pandemic. I am working on the idea and will update my page when finished. I will also discuss with my lecturer and get feedback on this development.

Graded Unit Development #2
Whilst on a recce of my first location, The Dean Castle, I discovered that the castle was currently under renovation. There has been scaffolding propped up on the castle and a general building site been created around the base. This has put a spanner in the works of my project as I cannot capture a quality image of the castle in this state. I also do not believe the renovations will be completed any time soon due to the current pandemic affecting business. I will go on another to try and find an angle that could work but I am not hopeful.
Images to follow.
