a lot of it just boils down to "as you move through the world sometimes you will see ugly people, and that's not a problem that needs solving"
you will see people who are old. you will see people who are fat. you will see people who are disabled. you will see people who are not making an effort to keep up with their hygiene or their hair or their clothes. you will see people wearing clothes and makeup and jewelry of a subculture you find disturbing and offputting. this is all fine. this does not need to be solved.
the offered solution has often been to say "oh no, don't say ugly, they're all beautiful in their way!" but that's not the point. nobody has to be beautiful just to exist, to be in public, to be in your view. that road leads to dudebros saying that women they don't consider sufficiently fuckable should wear bags over their heads. to HOAs urging residents to call the cops on homeless encampments being an 'eyesore' on their beautiful streets. to people pushing for institutionalization so that they don't have to share a public with neurodivergent people. to people demanding that physically divergent people trigger tag photos of themselves.
"everyone is beautiful" works up until you find someone you can't see the beauty in. but it doesn't matter. nobody is entitled to a world populated exclusively by beautiful people. no matter what tv and the internet may have led you to believe.

I have come to discover that the most efficient way for me to get housework done is to allow myself to just do task grazing. I start one thing and once I've got the ball rolling, I may notice another task I could do while doing the first task, and just let myself wander around the house, bumping into something I could fix, fixing it up, and heading back off to a random direction, like a roomba with hands. I didn't plan to do housework today, but I decided to bake a cake.
There was no real need for a cake, but I allowed myself to bake one nonetheless. Getting started on the batter, the butter I was melting in the microwave popped over slightly, so I neded up washing the microwave plate and dome. Looking for cinnamon, I re-arranged the spices into a slightly more logical order. Turning the oven on, I noticed that the dirty oven tray inside - that we had left in there to cool since there's no way to wash it while it's hot - was still there, so I figured I'd wash it, too.
So while the cake was in the oven, I ended up washing the dishes from the sink, and discovered that there's no way to fit the oven tray in there with them. So it's best to wash the oven tray in the shower. Scrubbing the tray in the bathroom and rinsing it off with the showerhead, I noticed the burnt gunk collecting on the floor. Getting a cleaning rag and wiping the gunk off, I noticed the dust in the corners of the bathroom floors, and figured I might as well wipe those through.
Had I sent out with the intention to spend today cleaning, and made it my task to clean the whole kitchen and to mop the bathroom floor, I would've never managed to actually get up and go do it. I would've spent the whole day frozen in place, beating myself up about not getting up and getting anything done, and wasting the entire day achieving nothing and still being exhausted by the ordeal of spending the whole day fighting myself.
But instead, I let myself bake a cake.

I finally did my postponed chocolate challenge, and my eyes were significantly larger than my stomach! In fairness, I expected it to be half the size it was - a 3x3x3-inch block of chocolate fudge cake, two chocolate sauce pots (and the pots were also made of chocolate!), a cream mountain, and three small scoops of chocolate ice cream, with a glass of hot chocolate to wash it down. Even the sign on top was a thin bar of chocolate.
Apparently only 4% of people manage to eat it all, so I'm in good company with my failure. Ate about half, though!

I love love love etymology because it's like every word has a back story intertwined with so many other words and through that you see ideas and culture and history and people and it's so beautiful okay I love word stories

Okay, but what if you chemically erase your memories while the tattooing is happening???
if we want the rewards of tattoo we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of talking to a tattoo artist

Reforming the human rights act
The UK is planning on reforming the human rights act.
If it wasn't shitty enough for them to try and go against BASIC human rights to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, they're now planning on making it legal for it to happen.
This is going to affect immigrants, refugees, criminals, disabled people and asylum seekers.
If the human rights act does get reformed, this is going to make it easier to deport people and reduce the government's responsibility to uphold human rights.
It's the government's way of cleaning their hands by pretending nothing has happened
Please please sign the petition so it will at least get debated in Parliament. Only UK residents and British citizens can sign it, but please please please reblog this to protect human rights

When I say I'm proud that my novel brought people to tears, it's less about sadism and more about "I am going to get a good grade on novel, a real thing that it is possible to aquire"

alright for the millionth time I'm seeing yet another author I admire talk about how they literally can barely afford to live & yet there are people openly admitting to pirating their books so, like
i guess it needs to be said again
pirating books is not the same as pirating your favourite Disney movie or whatever. book piracy kills author's incomes and can genuinely ruin someone's career
