On March 13, 2006, the Duke lacrosse team threw a party at an off campus house, hiring two strippers for the party as a joke. The next day, one of the exotic dancers told the Durham, North Carolina, police she was forced into a bathroom by three men on the team; she accused them of beating and raping her.  The school went into shambles after this news came out, even though the players knew very well that none of them had done anything wrong. Although it did not seem many were on the player’s side, the coach defended them saying he believed his athletes would not commit such a heinous act. Forty-six out of forty-seven team members complied with the judge’s order to provide DNA. The only black member of the team was not tested; because the stripper said her attackers were white (Duke Lacrosse Case Of False Rape Allegations, 2015). Duke ended up suspending the whole lacrosse team from play and their season was canceled with no hopes of getting a red-shirt year or another year of compensation. Seniors on the team sadly had to forfeit their final season on the field with no chance to play in a collegiate game again. The media labeled them as rapists, ruining many of their reputations even if they weren’t involved plagued the men on the team.

A recent story based at Stanford University caused uproar when swimmer Brock Turner was charged with sexual assault. Chaos ignited across college campuses because this man raped an unconscious girl. With undisputed evidence he was only charged with six months for sexual assault, a crime that usually warrants many years in jail (Sanchez, 2016).   The women had a really tough time handling life after being sexually assaulted especially after justice was not served. She was both upset and disappointed with how the school handled her situation.  Both alleged perpetrators along with victims are all affected by sexual assault because of the harm and impact it leaves on those involved.
