okay but for real the reason bbc merlin resonated so much with so many people is because we saw ourselves in it. dont try to tell me that merlin wasnt gay coded. maybe not everything was intentional but his quiet kind of masculinity, his unashamed affection for the men he loved, his kindness and fairness that is so hard to find in a protagonist of an action series!! in addition to the ENTIRE plot of him keeping a dangerous secret about himself hidden! the stakes are high: in this historical setting, failing to do so can lead to rejection from society. in the first episode, merlin, struggling to come to terms with himself, asks if he is a monster! the main villian, uther, works to keep warlocks underground and says magic is unnatural!! come on!

but what this show really did that some that have queer-coded characters fail to do is make the narrative happy. merlin isnt an unstable villian- he’s a lovable angel whose magic is a part of what makes him who he is. his secret is valuable, its a gift and a part of himself he accepts. it was never shameful or bad. the world around him isnt ready for him, but thats okay, thats not really what the story is about anyways. the audience is hopeful for a time when merlin can be himself openly instead of in secret- and we’re happy to follow his adventures in the meantime.

merlin was representation for people who didnt even know yet that they needed to be represented. the kind of alienation young lgbt+ people feel in the world is universal, and its nice to see the story of a character who feels the same way framed in a way that doesnt make him out to be pathetic or to be wrong. theres something in me that resonates so deeply with that. and i mean, merlin couldnt have been my favorite show for so long because of the writing or something. that show was awful. but it was also so so special. and i miss it every day
