People citing work emails and the like as something we could automate with AI, as if we didn't automate them decades ago with templates and form letters. A massive chunk of business communication is just sending out the same boilerplate messages again and again, it's just good if it's actual, checked-by-lawyers boilerplate text and not something made up by a computer that lies to you in the shape of checked-by-lawyers boilerplate text

AI won't replace radiologists anytime soon
The authors evaluated these models in four categories: the accuracy of organ and lesion volume measurements; the ability to recognize when features like lesions are present; the ability to reason based on visual information (e.g. which of two kidneys is largest); and medical reasoning (e.g. identify whether a given lesion is a benign cyst or a malignant tumor). In keeping with Betteridge's law of headlines, the authors' answer to their question "Are Vision Language Models Ready for Clinical Diagnosis?" is "No."

Just got rejected from a remote work role that I actually live right next to for "being an international applicant". What part of my address being next to yours, my citizenship being US, and my application showing an entirely US work history indicates I live outside of the US?
This is like when I applied to EA games for a summer internship decades ago and I was living in California (CA) at the time and applied for a California job and they transfered my application for the California job to the Canada (CA) branch and then didn't understand why I didn't live in Canada. And then I had to explain to the interviewer from Canada that called me that CA indicating the US was a thing and that they themselves had an office there and that is where the job I applied for was. (Suffice to say the Canadian team refused to return my application to the California office because "once it moves it's moved, we can't send it back to the correct spot).

Disney And NBCUniversal Sue AI Company Midjourney For Copyright Infringement
Kim Harris, executive vice president and general counsel of NBCU, said, “Creativity is the cornerstone of our business.  We are bringing this action today to protect the hard work of all the artists whose work entertains and inspires us and the significant investment we make in our content.  Theft is theft regardless of the technology used, and this action involves blatant infringement of our copyrights.”

Do you think I meant to write "stoopid" google docs. Do you think I meant to describe a character as "stoopid." Do you think that is what I meant to do

arguing against ai is always like. im not sure how to explain to you. that you need to think for yourself with your own thoughts. . maybe this would be easier to understand if idk, you were practiced in thinking for yourself

as part of my meeting with my future co-instructor yesterday, this point came up with respect to students using genAI to create their programming assignments:
Tumblr media
and i realized that yes we have asked students to demonstrate that they can walk but we're only actually grading them on how well they arrived at point B. and if the only POINTS students get are for the finished product, then no we are NOT asking them to demonstrate that they can walk.
so: next semester we're going to be adding instructions to the programming assignments that students should submit partially-completed work at certain checkpoints in the instructions
you only made one final submission of your completed work? okay you can have all the correctness points that it earns but you're out the 10% (or whatever) of the assignment grade that you'll get for making progress submissions

"I know chatgpt is bad but you just don't really have any choice" you literally do. Don't use it. Have some moral backbone.

"what did students do before chatgpt?" well one time i forgot i had a history essay due at my 10am class the morning of so over the course of my 30 minute bus ride to school i awkwardly used by backpack as a desk, sped wrote the essay, and got an A on it.
six months later i re-read the essay prior to the final exam, went 'ohhhh yeah i remember this', got a question on that topic, and aced it.
point being that actually doing the work is how you learn the material and internalize it. ChatGPT can give you a short cut but you won't build you the the muscles.
