Signs - Semiotics
Signs are everywhere. Each word, each letter, each picture is a sign. Culture is a production of sense through symbols. There are three different types of signs: Index, Icon and Symbol. Index is an image of something, Icon the connection of a picture and its meaning and a symbol is something that stands for something else without showing it exactly or literally. Languagesystems are constructing the world and language is also a way to construct ourselves. We use codes, arosen by conventions, through signs to communicate.

12 essential rules to follow when designing a logo – Jarkko Laine
The artice says logo design requires plenty of practice and experience for it to be successful. Knowledge is definitely power for any graphic designer.
First of all ist important to do a lot of sketching. You should start with 20 to 30 sketches to be able to choose. It’s really important not to take the first good idea but always try to find a better one. And almost always there is a better one. You just need to take the time to search for it.
Balance between graphics, colors and sizes is a safe approach. A lot of people can´t handle abstract stuff. Ist always better to work with a grate and geometric shapes.
Use a good combination of colors. Color theory is complex, but designers who understand the basics are able to use color to their advantage.
Some more rules:
- Design style should suit the company
- Typography matters… a lot! So choose the right font.
- The goal with the logo is for the average person to instantly call the brand to mind.
- How can you be different? Try breaking the rules of design and taking risks.
- The simpler the logo, the more recognizable it will be.
- Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, Photoshop, and other graphic design programs are extremely powerful tools and have many filters and effects that you can apply to your logo, but don’t get carried away!
- To produce consistently high-quality logos, you need to develop your own design process, or “assembly line.”
- Don’t copy other designers’ work! (this point kinda collides with the post we wrote before ... perspective perspective perspective!)

Presenting design
When you don`t present your work good to your clients, you`re not an designer. It´s part of the design-toolkit. It is normal to be nervous and anxious about it at the beginning of your career but you must do it again and again and again. It will get better. But you have to do it! You must understand, that design doesn*t sell itself, thats your part. The most important thing is that the client is confident with you as a designer and thats your job in the presentation: sell yourself as a designer and that you are the right person to do that job. Another important part in presentations is to be confident: “There should be absolutely no doubt that this is your meeting.Stand up. Walk to the head of the room. Announce who you are, what you do, reiterate the goals of the project and tell people how what you’re about to show them will meet those goals.” But to be confident also means that you`re being able to be wrong. Don*t get crumpy, when they criticize you. Also help your clients to give you the information you need. Don*t ask questions like “Do you like it?” You weren’t hired to make something they liked. Ask specific things you need to know!

Stealing ideas, yes please!
Creativity and to create something new and innovative is very important in the field of design. But think about that: the hole humanity is based on replications. So why it is a taboo to replicate in design? The art of imitation is to take something old and create something new out of it. But why do we all want to be novel? We brought it to ourselves with creative rankings and co. Maybe this should be stopped already in universities“I have no role model. I am myself!” But can you isolate yourself from your surroundings? Defintely not. It`s an illusion to think you can create something thats`s not inspired by others.

Some useful Designtools
http://type.method.ac/# Instructions Your mission is simple: achieve pleasant and readable text by distributing the space between letters. Typographers call this activity kerning. Your solution will be compared to a typographer’s solution, and you will be given a score depending on how close you nailed it. Good luck! Good for practicing kerning (we learned about this in Typography, it’s a playful way to learn :)
http://stylifyme.com/ a cool tool for web designers to analyse a certain color scheme and design
https://designschool.canva.com/blog/website-color-schemes/ really nice to get inspired and break out of your usual color-comfort zone

Who Are Graphic Designers, Anyways?
article: http://www.fastcodesign.com/3057540/infographic-of-the-day/who-are-graphic-designers-anyways/5?utm_content=buffer18eaf&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer author: Meg Miller The article writes about the book „Who Are Graphic Designers, Anyways?“.
The authors set out to survey Designers form the industry and created a book that visualizes complex statistics. The article picks some of the books topics and discusses them so that you get hungry for more. This book is a good investment (especially since it’s only 21$ - about 19 €). It’s not the main topic of the book, but this line caught my attention:
„They Suffer From A Major Gender Gap“ We thought that the design industry was a more female dominated one. While you study or go to school, you are surrounded by many girls and women, but once you look outside of the educational landscape, the design industry is mainly presented by men. Be it at design conferences, online articles or a list of top-rated designers. This gender-topic recently crossed our mind s quite often. Why is it, that even though women are just as talented and disciplined as men, they often feel not confident enough to stand in for themselves and their work? They work in the background. How can women change that? How can we change that?
