Friends, this is my last post here. Long story short: I’ve concluded that the scales have tipped with social media and it’s become more detrimental than beneficial. I wrote up a full blog post that delves into the details here if you’re interested http://grid7.co/bye-social I’ve been lucky to meet so many amazing people over the years and I hope to remain in touch outside of social media via intermittent real interactions. A final photo update: One of my first nights back from Bali (can’t believe that was August). This is the Basilica up near Estrela park at night - so beautiful, so Lisbon. I got to visit Aljezur in the Algarve down south with a group of people last month. They don’t have weekend lockdowns there and a handful of us went down to cheat and get some beach time in on the weekend. Was really nice. It’s been raining here non-stop the past few weeks until recently. The Van Gogh exhibit with @shiftingtides was a fun way to spend a Saturday. I can recommend it if you’re a Van Gogh fan. This little guy had too much egg nog the other night. This is my fav workout spot for TRX in Lisbon and it was beautiful to be there every other day as the leaves changed colors. I’ve been adopted by a group of Romanians and while I don’t yet speak any Romanian, I’m working on learning a Romanian song. For that matter I’ve made a big audacious goal to learn an acoustic song in every country. That will take a lifetime to complete but I’ve already learned ones in Spanish, Portuguese and Bahasa. There are 7000+ languages spoken in the world but only 195 countries. Learning a song for every country seems way more approachable as a goal. Bali weeks 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 That's a wrap on the Bali chapter for me. What was originally intended to be a 2mo stay turned into an inadvertent 6mo stint due to Covid. Here's the condensed summary of my last few weeks there: I spent the 2nd half of June living in this ridiculous villa with @helensimkins , @christabellatravels and @nikkibartol. Views were stunning. And we had laughing ducks. We had a proper July 4th BBQ at @canggucamp308 that rivaled anything I had done in the States, complete with grilled corn and a decapitated giant floating flamingo. I moved into my buddy Trevor’s place and would spend my last month there. His villa backs up against a small jungle and has epic sunsets. He introduced me to my favorite running trail. I would spend every other day in July running a narrow road between the rice fields listening to podcasts. Meet Bowie, perhaps the world's cutest puppy (next to @almathebalidog ). This little guy I never knew his name but he was intent on stealing my Oura ring. We had a magical Vietnamese dinner overlooking the rice fields. Shoutout to @_rachelcrocker_ for launching her sales course. Winner of the most under-appreciated tech of the trip: the AirPods. These things proved to be indispensable for navigation. It's funny, in December I was terrified to ride as a passenger on a scooter let alone drive one yet I now feel fully-proficient and ended up using one daily the entire time in Bali. Cheers to conquering fears. Bali was an incredible, unexpectedly-prolonged chapter and there is a 1000% chance I will be back. For now I'm back in Lisbon and looking forward to trying beach life in some of the coastal towns in Portugal via the @selina "Passport" product. Bali weeks 16, 17 , 18 , 19, 20 Here’s the monthly update from me: Beaches are finally re-opened in Bali and we’ve been capitalizing on that for sunsets recently. A couple of us did a trip to Bingin beach near Uluwatu and got to watch the surfers absolutely shredding there. There is a cute puppy named Alma that has joined our little tribe and she even now has her own instagram @almathebalidog She’s also ferocious and attacks you if you seem even remotely fun. I moved into a new villa with 3 friends from Nomad Cruise and will be closing out the rest of June there and angling to get back to Portugal around July 6th or so (flights permitting). I learned a song entirely in Bahasa for our Indonesian staff. We’ve had limes in coconuts. Crew after amazing crew of people. Walks through rice fields, exploring temples, sick villas in Uluwatu, infinity pools, all the Bali stuff… And similar to Remote Year, a group of folks who otherwise would likely have never become close has done just that. I’ve started business blogging on grid7.com writing about learnings from working with nocode and I’ve been working my way through the 30x500 academy doing their excellent course on how to launch a product you know will sell. I’ll be speaking next week for FutureofWork.co talking about our efforts with @charitymakeover_. Our next CM event is tentatively scheduled for July 25th. Bali weeks 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 Been awhile… here’s a quick update on what’s been happening with me over the past 5 weeks: I celebrated a b-day at @canggucamp308 We had our first ever entirely-virtual @charitymakeover_ and our volunteers proved that these events are indeed possible to execute entirely remotely. There’s a great recap video as the last post on our blog if you’re interested to see what kind of stuff our volunteers were able to build in a day. Canggu has started to re-open but with fairly intense rules. Banning hugs...okay but banning stories seems pretty heavy-handed. Our group is fostering the tiniest kitten on earth. His name is “Tiger” and he is our watchcat guarding our workspace. We celebrated another b-day (we’re getting to be pro’s at this). It’s now planting season here in Bali which means farmers are mostly done lighting their fields on fire and instead are now just watering them intensely. The geckos here are having nightly feasts on every imaginable flying insect. I’m pretty sure the geckos will be bigger than the kitten soon. The evenings here are pretty magical. It’s windy season and any given evening at dusk there will be dozens of these massive black kites in the air- some nearly a mile up. They don’t do the Kiterunner fighting thing - they just hover stationary but it’s beautiful. I’ve been on a tear lately having read these four books. At some point I’ll do a blog post summary of each. We had last night an amazing dinner with some amazing humans- Arthur of FasterToMaster.com, Erin of arenastrength.com and @_rachelcrocker_ of RachelCrocker.com Rest assured friends while I’m staying mostly fit I am still doing my part to rid the world of desserts one cheesecake at a time. Bali Weeks 8, 9 & 10 So much for weekly updates 😉 For the first time in 5mos I don’t have any spectacular photos to share. My weekly highlight lately is catching up with my folks via zoom. I’m in week 6 of the Faster To Master program and I highly recommend. I had interviewed Arthur Worsley as my last guest on @nomadprep podcast. As sometimes happens the podcast interview ended up selling me and I became a student. It’s a 6-week program to revamp your approach to productivity and time management. You do a time audit then seek to purge all activities that don’t get you closer to where you wanna be and focus on amplifying the ones that do. It builds on a lot of the ideas of David Allen’s “Getting Things Done” and extends them with a framework to ensure everything you do is strategic. It has an elegant tiered approach where each level rolls up to support the next level. The most value I’m getting is that I can trace the thread of how what I’m working on this minute supports my highest purpose. I’ve also been going through Michael Singer’s course “Living from a Place of Surrender.” I’m in week 7 of that and it’s very good as well. The notion of “surrender” isn’t natural to me- I’m a Taurus so I’m more inclined to charge ahead and make things work. But this course is an eye-opener explaining samskaras and how clinging and resisting creates blockages and surrender’s role in unblocking those. Anyways weathering this pandemic from paradise has its +’s: the food here has been on point. I’ve been helping the one and only @_rachelcrocker_ a bit with her biz. If you do any kind of online course or coaching she has an ingenious method for using FB messenger to generate leads. In other news apparently there’s something called the "Eskimo toe dance.” Who knew? We’re holding the first ever social distancing party for my b-day in a few weeks. Bali Week 7 We spent week 7 here quarantined on the northern side of the island in a private villa near Tianyar. This was the view off my porch. The sun glinting off the water every morning reminded me of when our family used to spend time on Coronado Island in San Diego growing up. We had a lot of downtime as the internet up there was nearly non-existent. I re-read two books: “Illusions" by Richard Bach and “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. Lots of creepy statues and ancient artifacts and roosters trudging around the yard all day. We got good at recombinating the same canned ingredients with different sauces and doing dinners by candle light. @helensimkins found the 3sqft of space on the property that had intermittent cell signal. We improvised with coconuts one night and had a game of bocce ball at sunset. Did I mention there were a lot of roosters? @mattbowlesmaverick had me on his podcast for an unprecedented 3rd interview (that episode will be published tomorrow) to talk about our hurry-up offense to retool @charitymakeover_ to support all-virtual hackathons. Our hope is to be able to both provide some much needed assistance to some of the charities on the ropes right now from COVID-19 fallout but also give some meaningful work opportunities to people who are quarantined and sitting on their hands out of work. Ever the gracious host Matt fast-tracked this episode to get it live to help promote for our first ever virtual hackaton on Apr 11th. We slept most nights with our doors open and woke up to this scene. It was a good week of decompression but we’re now back in Canggu for the fast reliable internet and I’m heads-down making the changes needed to our tech stack to enable what we’re trying to facilitate for these various causes. Bali Week 6 We’re in day 3 of a self-imposed quarantine on the north coast of Bali and the most action we’ve seen is a bunch of chickens running around our yard (confirmed they do cross the road but we still don’t know why). As Americans we have been inundated with messages from our government directing us to return home but IMO this country has less far to fall than the US in this crisis and I feel more confident in the Balinese’s capability to weather this storm. We are here in this tropical paradise for now until the situation demands otherwise. It’s time to unplug and unwind as a society. Wednesday is the Balinese holiday called Nyepi, which is like Yom Kippur where all power is cut and it’s a 24-hour window of downtime. COVID is forcing this holiday at a global scale. As nomads our situation is largely unaffected. I recognize we are fortunate in that regard and most of the world is facing an incredibly difficult time. I highly recommend ordering a TRX as a way to stay in shape at home. @crispypelican introduced me to this device on @remoteyear and I’ve done it weekly ever since. It’s a fantastic way to have a home gym. When one door closes another opens... If you’re like many you’re on an inward journey during this time. I recommend adding this book on Stoicism - I found it to be incredibly beneficial grid7.co/goodlife @benlakoff and I are scrambling to retool @CharityMakeover_ and transition from physical hackathons to virtual hackatons so we can play a small part in providing much-needed aid to the non-profits which are on the ropes right now. Apr 11th is the next event. @helensimkins and I have been holding down the fort but @nomaddennis and @travelinglifestyle just arrived and we have a little @nomadcruise commune now. Bali week 5 The world done changed this last week… still wrapping my head around how fast this COVID-19 thing has mushroomed into a pandemic. A week ago Christina, Helen and I were munching JFC (yes it’s KFC but one louder) on the way to… a remote part of the island to capture footage for @east_bali_poverty_project and what we’re doing for them via @charitymakeover_ We got to meet their students… and see a part of Bali I had not yet experienced. EBPP is doing amazing work in the jungle. They have a for-profit arm building bamboo bikes and the latest is this entirely-bamboo wheelchair they’ve put together. The proceeds from the sales of these items go to fund their non-profit effort that is educating youth and providing toilets and clean water to rural villages nearby. It’s an amazing operation and we were very fortunate to see it firsthand. We have refined the CM format and did a better job ramping up with team leader engagement leading into the weekend event. We threw our biggest ever Charity Makeover on Saturday with a total of 32 volunteers supporting 6 different charities with workers spanning 5 different timezones. I have not had the chance to comb through all the assets developed but I am incredibly proud of the effort and energy of the volunteers this weekend. Thanks to our sponsors, mentors, the @canggucamp308 venue and everyone who mobilized to make this work. Guys, don’t worry. I’m still crushing desserts in spite of the virus. I have a theory I’m testing now that it avoids chocolate cake. I will report back on how this pans out. Nothing changes for me gym-wise. My gym has been this tree since I got here. Bali Week 4 Can’t believe we’ve been here a month already… A group of us went to a different water park on Saturday. This is not me hahah. This is more my speed. This place is a giant circular lake with a cable system running above it that tows you around and lets you wakeboard, kneeboard, waterski and/or drags you through the water when you fail to let go of the handle. Prior to that I took advantage of the alternative healing scene here and had my first “live blood analysis” to see how healthy I really am. So crazy to see the cosmos of all the little microbes moving around inside of one drop of blood… one of those moments of zoom in via microscope to think about that universe then zoom out with a telescope and realize how incredibly vast the actual universe is. We’re the little microbes in someone else’s plasma basically hahaha We made the most out of a visa run and I got to have an incredible lunch with one of my favorite people in a magical place. I’m taking Nikki through “Start With Why” - this is one of the most powerful exercises I believe one can undertake. If there’s something that can yield a higher return in terms of being a force multiplier for one’s own impact, I have yet to find it. We went to a villa party on Sunday in a place that could be on MTV Cribs. Unbelievable what you can get here for $1k/mo. Ben and I are now in full-on attack mode with @charitymakeover_ #7 approaching this weekend. We have a sellout event of 30 confirmed volunteers for this one serving 5 charities making it our biggest event to date. We also should be having a nice little PR piece hit this week which will give us a stress test of the nocode application we recently deployed. Fingers crossed it weathers the impending PR storm. Our workdays are punctuated by the occasional Balinese parade by the workspace. This place continues to impress. I’m a big fan of Bali at this point and can for sure envision making this a regular stop on the yearly global circuit. Bali Week 3 I’ve been in Bali three weeks now and I understand the appeal of this place. These are some shots I took this morning on my 3min scooter commute to the workspace. I pass 4 different Hindu temples on the way to work each day and all of them have intricate stonework. Speaking of scootering, I picked up this stowaway the other day. He just jumped on my scooter and sat there like “where are we going?” Adorable. This place has torrential rains most days around 4pm. It reminds me of the way the monsoons used to be in Arizona way back in the day before Phoenix was a concrete jungle. I took this video yesterday while I was working on the Esperanca mobile app. It probably rained 3” yesterday in this storm. No wonder it’s so lush here. It’s been Galungan and Kuningan holidays recently and the roads are lined with these giant bamboo poles with offerings on the end of them. Every doorway has a little tray of cigarettes, coffee, candy and incense. And at any given moment you’ll be driving and the road will get blocked off with a procession of people playing percussion instruments and dressed up like a life-sized monster. Food here continues to impress. Their produce is next-level and everything is served with bamboo straws and wooden spoons. I can definitely see how people come intending to make a brief visit and end up staying years here. My Portuguese residency requirements dictate that I need to get back to Lisbon in a month but 100% this will not be the last time I visit Indonesia. Bali week 2 We’ve been here in Canggu just over two weeks now. My favorite thing so far was the long, winding drive yesterday to Udara. There was this giant temple in the middle of the rice paddy. Perfectly paved and shaded road zigzagging through the countryside. Every Sunday they have morning lineup of yoga, ecstatic dance, sound healing and chanting. The DJ yesterday was playing these hypnotic tribal beats and there must have been 300 people there. The food has been excellent so far. I get this breakfast and a juice pretty much every day for 100 IDR (~$7). Our coworkers are a little noisy in the workspace but we tolerate them because they’re so adorable. We’re here during the rainy season which means almost every day around 4pm these massive thunderheads roll in and dump rain on us. You have to time your scooter rides accordingly and keep a poncho under the seat. This reincarnation of Jimmy Hendrix melted my face last weekend. Speaking of face-melting: I’m excited to be playing my first open mic here tonight. I’m dusting off some old original tunes. Love that the venue is named after a Ben Howard song - that bodes well. Our next Charity Makeover event is less than 3wks out and we’re in full prep mode. We’re supporting 5 different charities (2 of which are local Balinese ones). @charitymakeover_ I’m using this opportunity to build out the tooling necessary for running events exclusively through our app. The “Nocode” movement is a game-changer for entrepreneurs. The goal is to be able to be a consumer of this app and use it ourselves for everything. Once we can run things entirely without cheating and updating the site manually or opening direct access to the database, we will have reached v1 of the platform and it will be fully possible for anyone to bring Charity Makeover to his/her town using our platform. Some exciting news: there is a high likelihood we’ll be accepted into Portugal’s most renown incubator program with CM. Fingers crossed 🤞 we should know shortly on that. Bali week 1 About 50 people from Nomad Cruise have reunited in Bali, Indonesia and are roaming around. This was a reunion gathering on one of our very first days in town. I’ve only been in Bali a week now but it’s long enough to vouch that it is truly a magical place and I totally get the appeal now. I’m super glad I learned how to ride a scooter in Koh Tao because it’s pure chaos on the roads here. The sunsets rival those of Costa Rica. And they have these elaborate Hindu statues in random places. I recorded my last podcast for Pagely on the rooftop of our cowork space this week with the amazing @poondingo. Could not have asked for a better last guest. My transition out of my role there is now complete and thus ends a 4.5yr era. I was reminiscing back through my photos from Remote Year and subsequent travels at some of the amazing places it’s enabled me to work. They are hiring for a couple positions. This is one of the charities we’ll be working with at our next event: East Bali Poverty Project. They are doing amazing work in remote villages in Bali and are helping solve sanitation, clean water, education and work needs. They empower the locals to make these bamboo bikes which are then sold and the revenue of which goes to fund their development efforts. Win win. We went to a waterpark yesterday and spent the day trouncing around like 5-yr-olds hitting all the slides. I can’t remember the last time I went to a water park but it was such a great day up until the last run when someone in our crew hit her head on the slide and broke some teeth. Be careful out there. This quarter pipe shoots you 40’ completely vertical before swooshing you down into the pool. I’ve never done anything like it. Super stoked to be here in Bali for a bit and have control of my days. Koh Tao weeks 5 & 6 And just like that our time on Koh Tao has come to an end. It’s been an epic six weeks. I got the advanced dive certification and am intending to use it to wreck dive in Bali. I got to shred (twice) at the Good Vibes open mic and @rickculbertsonbkk and I laid down some sweet harmonies. I ate this meal at Coconut Monkey at least 30x. Despite what appears to be an unending vacation I actually worked. A lot. Happy with the progress on Jan goals. Fell short on a few but made a solid dent. Decided to make this a monthly ritual and made some new ones for Feb. Hard to believe we began this crazy adventure in Athens mid-Nov. The big news is my 4.5yr run as Director of Sales for Pagely is coming to an end. I’m taking some time off then devoting my energy full-time to the @CharityMakeover_ project I started. I’ve teamed up with @benlakoff to make a run at turning this into a global movement. (BTW Please somebody have a connection at Instagram so we can evict the @charitymakekover squatter and not have an underscore in our handle 🤣). Pagely has enriched me on multiple levels and I am grateful to have worked alongside some badass human beings doing my work from all over the world these past 4yrs. Koh Tao Week 4 update: This weekend I got my Advanced Open Water diver certification and overcame my fear of deep diving. I did a total of 5 dives including a night dive where we saw an octopus, a bunch of weird fish and bioluminescent plankton. We turned off our flashlights under water and in the pitch black waved our hands to agitate the water and 1000’s of these little shimmering creatures lit up in the wake of the disturbance- it was an unforgettable alien-like experience. This last month has been one of conquering multiple fears. My friend @rickculbertsonbkk taught me the basics of how to ride a scooter and I’ve been using it to get around all the past week gradually beating my fear of 2-wheeled vehicles. @helensimkins and I found a spot on the other side of the island where people live in these little houses on stilts right about the bluest water. We discovered @savagekohtao has a killer Sunday pool volleyball scene. I’ve eaten 90% of my meals at @coconut.monkey and can’t stop ordering their Buddha Bowl. If I had to eat this dish every day for the rest of my life I’d 100% be okay with that. I finally finished Gary Keller’s “The ONE Thing” book, implemented his methodology using a mind mapping tool and started applying his focusing question to my own goals. So far so good. Too early to testify to this but it’s a useful lens to guide what you work on next. Highly recommend his book (check his podcast interview with Tim Ferriss for a sample of what he’s about). In other news I’ve been steadily improving @iceman_hof retention times and can now hold my breath for over 4min. W00t. We’ve seen amazing sunset upon sunset… ...upon epic sunset on this beautiful island. The coworking space has been legit with 200/300MB internet up/down and has provided a productive space to do my work for Pagely. Here for another two weeks then headed over to Bali to meet up with friends there. Koh Tao Week 3 update: Our merry band of 30 or so nomads has boiled down to a smaller group. We all did New Year’s together and people have been peeling off ever since. New Year’s here was a pyro’s dream: they basically just lit everything on fire in the bay (minus the boats). This is a group shot of us on our snorkel adventure day. A smaller group of us took a boat to Nang Yuan Island and snorkeled around. We saw lots of parrot fish and the little guys who look like Nemo. My nightly banana pancake is bringing my dessert abs in nicely. @benlakoff is jealous. We played an improvised version of poleish on the beach using bamboo poles. cc @c_birdie28 @chase_n @gamebird415 @centeredbygratitude invented a new way to roast marshmallows. I discovered a new style of handmade frozen ice cream cc @cpelican4 We had our farewell get together at a negative edge pool bar overlooking a rain storm and did a jam session at sunset. The small group of us that now remains all moved to the south side of the island and did a month-long lease and locked in a coworking space. The workspace has a hammock that requires daily stress testing to make sure it doesn’t fall. I grudgingly volunteered for that duty. We found a place a few minutes walk down from our workspace where you get fresh bowls with your feet in the sand while listening to reggae and overlooking the water. If ever you can’t find me, start your search here. This weekend we all scootered to the SE side of the island and swam a total of a mile to Ko Kong Sai Daeng island (which we later learned is dubbed “Shark Island”). good thing we all had cuts from barnacles 😳 🦈 Our small stalwart crew are the lone carry overs from Nomad Cruise X and will be in Koh Tao another two weeks before heading to Bali. Shoutout to @rickculbertsonbkk for helping me conquer my fear of scooters this weekend and getting me some independence with a scooter. BTW my semi-annual update email went out last week. S̄wạs̄dī txn b̀āy from Koh Tao, Thailand. We’ve been here a week now watching sunsets like this one pretty much nightly. Christmas Eve was the day after we arrived and they had this whole fire show dance party on the beach for it. We’re minutes from a bay with crystal blue water and there’s now a group of about 30 holdovers from NCX in town. This was a harrowing ride through a jungle area up to the Mango Viewpoint. Worth it though for the sunset there. A couple of our people have joined the Crossfit gym. This has been my gym the past week. I got a refresher PADI course and have done 3 dives here. We did an early morning one yesterday that got cancelled due to poor visibility but the second one was pretty fantastic. Photo cred courtesy @kohtaodivers I’ve been largely unplugged from everything and reading a bunch. I finished “Courage to be Disliked” at @hnshah’s recommendation and it was a good one. It’s one that I feel like I need to re-read - it was simple yet profound and one of those that gets deeper the more you think about it. Daily Stoic is one I’ve been reading daily per @benlakoff recommendation so technically I “finished it” today but I only started a week ago 😉 “The One Thing” is one that keeps popping up. It’s by Gary Keller (guy who founded Keller Williams) - I just heard his pod interview on Tim Ferris and am about halfway through his book. This is the big tree under which I’ve been doing most of my reading. I’m looking forward to getting back into work mode after the holidays. Our group is doing open-ended travel at this point but a chunk of us just locked in a one-month lease in Koh Tao so will be good to get a more permanent base and routine to start off 2020. Sawasdee krab from Bangkok 👋. We left the desert of Dubai last week and came here- this is my first time in Asia. 📸 cred @benlakoff We walked around and saw a bunch of the old town yesterday. A lot of pointy buildings... Beautiful gold Buddha statues... Massive shrines with chanting Buddhist monks... And one of the most epic sunsets over Wat Arun and the Chao Phraya River (I’ve never seen the sun so red). We took a water taxi through the city which is nice because you can bypass all the traffic. This city reminds me a lot of CDMX but it goes all night and has a crazy electric vibe. We had drinks on the rooftop of a 40-story building... And some of us ate scorpions. We’ve been staying in a hotel that’s just €30/night but you’d think it was €200/night by the amenities & service. The adventure continues with these wacky @nomadcruise vagabonds.
