Mysterious structures in the sky that have puzzled astronomers for decades might finally have an explanation – and it’s quite something.

The North Polar Spur and the Fan Region, on opposite sides of the sky, may be connected by a vast system of magnetized filaments. These form a structure resembling a tunnel that circles the Solar System, and many nearby stars besides.

“If we were to look up in the sky,” said astronomer Jennifer West of the University of Toronto in Canada, “we would see this tunnel-like structure in just about every direction we looked – that is, if we had eyes that could see radio light.”

Let’s be honest: in the Solar System, there really is no good place for humans that isn’t Earth. But that doesn’t mean all bad places were created equal; and Venus is about as inhospitable as a temperate-zone rocky exoplanet can get.

In recent years, evidence has been mounting to suggest that this was not always the case. That, once upon a time, in its wild, wayward youth, Venus could have been habitable, with a lovely climate and even liquid oceans.

Well, maybe we should forget all that. According to new research modelling the climate of Venus and of Earth in their early years, Earth’s so-called sister planet would never have cooled sufficiently to allow the condensation of water into liquid.

I’m just super fucking bitter that once the flint water crisis got it’s 15 minutes of fame people stopped giving a shit. The water is still poisoned, people! Donations have plummeted and people have been forced back into drinking and bathing with the water! The medical effects of this are astounding, cases of legionnaires disease have skyrocketed, people are having seizures, people are having weird rashes break out over their body, people (including me!) are having their blood poisoned, and it’s not just lead! it’s coliform bacteria! it’s THMs! it’s all in the water and it gets into the bloodstream and breaks down blood vessels, causing bruising and petechiae and internal bleeding and no one gives a shit anymore and it’s only gotten worse like how many people are going to have to die until people realize this is still a problem
