really wanna figure out what goes on through the thick cardboard aerated brains of people who genuinely believe that a clubs reputation doesn’t affect how a player is seen by media or by the general public ESPECIALLY when that player is of colour. You have to be ding brained to not only believe that, you’d be a hundred times lead brained to believe that somehow a club’s reputation (or lack of one) will not affect the way a player goes through criticism, that including racism. Now enlighten me here, does this fit the bill for any players in the Premier League right now? Maybe a black man? 21 years of age? Is of Nigerian ethnicity? Plays for a club in North London but is from West? Figured.
Now if you somehow don’t agree with me here, kick yourself in the nuts and come back. You’re a dope.

every other club in england is as diverse if not more so than arsenal but u don’t hear everyone else whining abt how it’s racism whenever someone talks shit abt them gooners are so fucking annoying
ok so I’ve been going back and forth as to whether I should actually answer this seriously, jokingly or just ignore it well I love taking everything overly seriously so let me explain to u why the way arsenal is treated by media and other fans *is* racism actually. this is going to be a long answer so strap in!!
memory is LONG in football and clubs gain reputations that stick for decades. in the same way liverpool is seen as a working class club and are subjected to classist chants, or spurs with ties to the jewish community, arsenal has for a long time been seen as non-white (specifically black) and immigrant dominated, the opposite of what the white british ideal (contrasted with man u for example as we often are. u can see their favourable treatment by pundits or dare I say refs too is quite clear particularly in the 90s-2000s)
as thierry henry said:
[Arsenal] always have been the club of the people, the streets. Arsenal was one of the first clubs to really have black players, so it did represent the mass. The mass of the UK & of how London is.
when all the rest of english football looked like an edl meeting arsenal represented how london (and many cities in england) actually looked like. all u have to do is look at our legends: thierry henry, patrick vieira, ian wright, rocky rocastle, sol campbell (lol) all black and many non-english or coming from immigrant families. or dennis bergkamp and robert pires also foreign players. we do ofc have white english legends too (david seaman, tony adams) but compared to other clubs? there’s a clear difference
and look at our academy boys now, all of our breakout stars are all black/mixed working class londoners (bukayo saka, reiss nelson, eddie nketiah, emile smith rowe, joe willock, folarin balogun, etc). again not saying there aren’t young black english players in other teams’ academies but again there’s a difference
we were the first club to field 9 black outfield players, first club to put out an entirely foreign matchday squad, beat rma in the ucl with an entirely foreign squad too. not to mention wenger was one of the first foreign managers in the prem and the first to win the league. and we were hated for it publicly and openly, ppl despised us for not being white and english. wenger openly talked abt racism in football at a time where this was not a thing at all yet (2005 lmao)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
u can say it’s bare minimum or whatever but hear what multiple black players have said abt wenger and how he supported them when racism in football was at its worst. by the standards then it wasn’t nothing
our fans too are incredibly diverse and have always been dominated by immigrants and people of colour. as thierry and sol said:
Tumblr media
in particular our big south london fanbase is bc of our connection to black immigrants (esp children of the windrush generation) during the 80s and 90s. and representation on the pitch was important for ppl and it wasn’t happening anywhere else in england. listen to ian wright talking abt his first goal for arsenal:
"Me, Kevin Campbell, David Rocastle, Paul Davis, Michael Thomas, five man from south London at Leicester when I’d just scored — it’s amazing.” “People don’t make any reference to the fact that my first goal for Arsenal with five black men, all from south London, playing for Arsenal. People don’t even make that connection"
and I see other white english fans frequently use this as a jab against us and it’s very often in the same vein of racism against london in general. that we’re not white, we’re immigrants and we’re not ‘real’ londoners bc of that. they don’t understand that arsenal/gooners like london is made of immigrants. the only real londoners are immigrants, we are intensely local whilst being intensely international that is simply how london works
bc not only do we have diversity we are incredibly proud of it. we aren’t quiet abt these things we celebrate the fact we are a london club filled with immigrants and the children of immigrants, we literally have our international fanbases displayed on the outside of our stadium!! and look at the fans chosen to be celebrated on our stadium art!! we love who we are and we don’t hide away from it!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and all this hatred against arsenal in the media and from other fans started in the 80s and 90s and strengthened in the 2000s and has never gone away. like it’s as simple as that. u think a guy who hated us for racist reasons in 1997 or 2005 magically stopped hating us for racist reasons now he’s a pundit on sky? no, they just don’t say the quiet bit out loud anymore (usually) but at the root of it all it’s there. I’m not saying if u hate arsenal ur racist but I am saying the root of a lot of the hatred of arsenal is historically based in racism
obviously if ur a rival fan u might disagree and say arsenal don’t have unfavourable treatment or that this is a stretch to connect the two things. what’s undeniable tho is that:
a) arsenal have a long and deep connection with the black community in london (so much so there’s a book on it coming out next year abt it called Black Arsenal, should be v interesting)
b) arsenal have historically been one of the most diverse clubs in terms of players and fans, and have been mistreated bc of racism and xenophobia.
it’s not hard to see how these things tie together and affect how we’re talked abt now. maybe ppl don’t know, maybe they don’t care, but this is our history!! and we’re fucking proud of it!!
some sources below (altho a lot of this doesn’t necessarily have a source. u just have to go to the emirates and you’ll see)

It’s easy to “work hard” when you have millions and millions of dollars of players on the bench ready to swap you out at any given moment ensuring you don’t overwork yourself and the consistency of the teams results isn’t in danger. So yes, if you’re spending near to a billion at one point to make a starting XI potentially severely breaking FFP rules, yes! Your teams achievements mean nothing cause have no logical competition! And Grealish absolutely did not warrant his 100M price tag out of Villa now what? Inter winning the CL would be 1000 times more of an achievement than the souped up avengers that they’re playing against so you can give up this victim complex that you anf every other city fan loves to use as if there’s a level of oppression you’re going through from people criticising you. And one thing, everyone works hard in the prem. It doesn’t mean you deserve success based on that. The team are an extension of City as a club, and the club does not deserve one bit of the success they’ve amassed so the players don’t. Hope that helps 💯💯💯
People saying that city is oil money and that's the reason why they're winning shit is INSANE. It's not like the players are putting in the performance of a lifetime every match and playing like their lives depend on it. Not to mention their spending is equal or less than most top pl teams. People using oil money to devalue all their hard work are the definition of bitter.
