Listen - A Documentary about the Human Relationship with Music
“LISTEN” is a documentary that explores the involvement of music in everyday life through four unique professions.
Through exploring these professions, the audience gains an insight into the importance of music with regard to our emotions, moods, personalities and individual differences.
The Idea for the documenatary stemmed from overlooking the study of music cognition. Music cognition is the study of what your brain is doing when you are learning, listening, playing, practicing and imagining music. In other words,it is the study of the human relationship with music.
I decided to approach the subject from a more understanding practical level and explore the relationship people have with music who know it the most. I decided the best possible people to interview for this style of documentary would be those who actually make their living from music, whether it is practising, educating, producing or playing.
From interviewing these four professional people I was able to cover all of the aspects of music cognition.

Joy - Winter Sunrise
This image was taken and intended to represent Joy.
The image was taken on the east side of Howth Hill leading up to the Summit. The image consists of the sun rising up from the sea’s horizon and into the morning sky awkening everything it touches. The image was intended to show the joy and excitement of a what a new day brings. The shot was planned well ahead of time so I could capture the moment. Similar to most sun shoots, it is the colour tones that allure the viewer and make the image visually pleasing. The sun represents the joy of life with its intense ball of white surounded by a strong hue of yellow dispersing into shades of orange and pink. On the right of the image we see shorter tones of blue and purple as well as speckles of white.
The Golden Ratio and The Rule of Thirds were both part of my compositional technique as was the use of diagonal lines in which I incorporated the cliff’s edge to line up the foreground. I was happy with the darkness of the foreground as it gives good contrast to the rest of the image.
The ripples of the sea in the middleground give an added element, as do the rolling clouds in the background. The clouds proved to be a lovely addition as they capture the escaping shadows and colours. Sunrise usually comes second to none with sunset but this image shows just how beautiful they can be. Also if you look close enough you’ll spot some birds flying in the background giving another element of joy and life to the image.

Anger - Broken Plate
This image was taken and intended to represent Anger
After failed attempts of taking pictures of fire I did a little more brainstorming and landed with more of an abstract idea.
The image is an interior shot and instead of involving nature it was more of an compositional set up. The image consists of a broken plate and a contrasting vase of red roses, the backdrop is a red tablecloth. The plate lies on a red table mat giving contrast to the jagged sharp edges of the plates.
The whole idea was to incorporate the primary colour red in an attempt to portray anger. Red can be associated with love and passion but it’s also commonly associated with violence and warfare. The broken white plate gives good contrast to the monochromatic image.
Again the Golden Ratio was a big part of my compositional layout. I took my time with the set up and framing before taking the shot.
The roses were added to provide a contrasting element as well as adding juxtaposition. I wanted the image to appear slightly darker and to achieve this I altered the curves adjustments in Photoshop accordingly.

Danger - Train Line
This image was taken and intended to represent Danger.
After brainstorming ideas I landed with the traintrack idea as I knew this would give me leading lines and cautionary colours to work with.
The image was taken at the intersection between Howth and Sutton Dart station. Grid structure and framing was key for this image, the leading lines played a big part in the layout as well as getting the message across. In the foreground we have the yellow intersection warning lines. The colour yellow is well known in society forrepresenting caution, it’s also used to help people find information.
The leading lines (trainlines and powerlines) are intended to lead the viewer to a vanishing point as well as providing depth of field. In a sense this leaves the image up to interpretation in which the viewer can fear the unknown or imagine the oncoming subject. Both of which are intended to conjure the sense of danger.
Capturing the diagonal and triangular shapes in the foreground proved to be another element, this added an extra layer of dynamic tension as well as providing pattern. Use of symmetry between the track lines was also one of the composition techniques I incorporated when framing the photo.
I liked the colour combination between the cautionary lines and the yellowish sunset sky so I made slight Vibrance and Contrast adjustments in Photoshop.

Safe - The Lighthouse
This image was taken and intended to represent the word Safe.
The Image was taken in Howth at the peninsula entrance to the cliff walk. The Image consists of several different elements. In the foreground we see a pathway surrounded by wild vegetation. The pathway leads the eye to the middleground creating visual depth. At the end of the cliff we see a lighthouse which is the main subject to the image. Sitting idle on the left, the lighthouse shepherds the boats in and out of the harbour, this is the images main reference to safety.
The sea surrounding the lighthouse is a pale blue colour which gives some contrast to the lush greenery of the cliff side. Blue is known for representing peace and is a favourable colour among most people. In the background we see south Dublin, the Wicklow mountains and the sunset sky above. The colour of the sky is an important element as its soft hue and brushed clouds represent calmness and give the image an added warmth. The picture was deliberately taken in the evening time as the soft light was perfect for achieving this effect.
The Rule of Thirds is prominent in the image and was part of my compositional layout when shooting the photo. Originally the image was slightly bigger so I cropped it removing some of the unnecessary elements. I also made slight level adjustments in Photoshop editing the mid tones accordingly. This helped with brightening the foreground while preserving the image quality.

Linearity

This Image is titled "Linear Planes I" it represents linearity and is quite similar to the previous painting I posted titled the Digital Exchange especially in terms of colour usage.
The lines are vertically alligned with the exception of two on either side of the yellow square. This sudden change of colour briefly disrupts the pattern of the image adding an unnatural element.
The yellow square is eye catching and is the focal point of the painting.
In addition to the lineraity theres also a nice distribution of colour. Overall I think the painting is a great example of using just the right amount of a certain colour before something begins to look unatural. This is in regard to every colour in the painting representing balance and symmetry.

Acrylic Pour Painting

This was was my attempt at an Acrylic Pour Painting.
My friend had been experimenting with acrylic painting as a hobby and I was intrigued to give it a go. The colours I choose were predominately red white black and blue. It was a fun and messy process and our intention was completely abstract.
The finished design was unique and otherworldly to say the least haha however I thought the patterns turned out well in the end and overall the technique was a great example of how a rich contrast of the right colours can be visually appealing.

Ancient Inspiration

This is "Lion Man".
The sculpture is believed to be the oldest man made sculpture in existence dating back 40,000 years. It is believed to of been shared and passed around during ancient storytelling sessions.
The sculpture symbolises a human/lion that doesnt exist in the natural world suggesting the idea of the supernatural. The "Lion Man” can be seen as one of the earliest examples of Human Creativity and shows how our ancient predecessors had a love for imaginarey ideas and beliefs.
Historian Yuval Noah Harari belives that if we were to travel back in time and meet the people who made the sculpture we’d be able to explain most of todays modern fiction with little to no problem.
Today a depiction of a lion standing on two feet can be seen throughout modern day culture, being represented in several different logos. A popular example would be the Peugeot logo.

Personally I find the sculpture hugely inspiring, even just to look at and imagine the ancient people and the stories that were told throughout the generations.

Logo Design
Today we had our 8th Visual Communications lecture. We looked at logo design and different styles you’d come across in the industry.
Logos are usually made up of Text and Images that represent the relevant business. Commonly we see logos used for advertisement purposes.
One of the most popular logo types is Abstract Logos, famously used by Nike and Pepsi.
Pictorial Logos are great for apps e.g Apple, Snapchat, Twitter.
Mascot Logos are also great logo’s appealing to bigger audiences and children e.g. Tayto and KFC
Combination and Emblem Logos are a little more detailed and use more of a classic, traditional style. e.g. Burger King, Rolex, Starbucks, Harley-Davidson.
When designing logo’s its important to remember that it needs longevity. It takes a lot of time and good advertising for logos to succeed. Its good to think of it as a swimming competition rather than a diving competition.
